There are a lot of great examples of screaming and growling, like Opeth. But there are a lot of horrible examples as well, like pretty much every teenage metal band. Its a situational thing, I'm not going to dismiss a band because they have screaming, but I'm going to be wary, because if you suck at it it'll bring the whole band down.
I like power in my music, so someone who can scream musically is great. Magali Luyten, Matt Shadows, Rob Halford, and, yes, Roger Daltrey, are gods in this regard:
What's especially great is when a screaming vocalist can suddenly turn around and start singing with a very smooth, melodic tone. Which all of the above singers can do, although some of the videos don't show that.
On the other hand, I can't stand the growling. Mark Jansen just completely ruins Epica for me...*sigh*

If there's no harmony there's no music. Anyone can scream into a mic.
I suppose it wholly depends. Broadly speaking I don't like bands who just scream/growl/cookie monster/whatever through song after song. Gets old very quickly, and I'm the kind of person who likes to understand what the hell is being sung.
That said, I do not object to a scream or a growl (maybe) if done to add an extra edge to the song, every now and then.
Depends on the song, things like whether you can understand what they are saying and if there are other proper parts to it, like words and stuff, rather than just screechy screechyness, cos thats not good. Only in my opinion though .
It totally depends on the singer or mood of the music.
I can't imagine something really angry being sung harmoniously.
Although, if the singer/growler/whatever has a annoying voice it can turn me off straight away.
It also helps if the band/song utilises both, such as Mid-era Bleeding through or Scar Symmetry.
For a great voice, see Mike Patton. That man is a vocal god.
