I definitely don't like smoking. My Mom's been smoking since she was 17 and my siblings and I have been trying to get her to quit, she wants to quit too. But she hasn't been able to since it's such a strong addiction.

I don't care if a person smokes or not, hell I find the anti-smokers more annoying then the people who do smoke.

It can look good in drawings and stuff where you just see the glamorized smoke, and the cigarette or whatever isn't even noticeable.

But "IRL"? Where you can see all the ashes, the smell's putrid and knowing it can give you that horrible croaky voice?
I'll pass, thank you very much.

EDIT:
Feel I should point out that I don't have anything against the people who smoke, it's just the habit.
My dad used to smoke and, through friends, I've met some people who smoke and are some of the most likeable fellas this side o' the solar system.

What are your opinions on smoking? Many people I know do this mostly because I'm a teenager and I guess a lot of teenagers smoke but I find it to be pretty gross what are your opinions?
Actually a recent poll found that only 20% of teenagers smoke. so one out of five of your friends is a smoker. Being a smoker I don't find smokers attractive or disgusting, We are people with bad habits like people who drink in excess or bite there fingernails. While I won't force other people to smoke I find it slightly rude that the general public finds it appropiet to chastize us, tell us we're bad and penalize us with high taxes and social exile. I could quit, true it would be better for my health and bank account, but I enjoy it. Much like I enjoy video games with violence and adult themes. Please understand we are not hurting anyone but ourselves (they have proven second hand smoke is a load of shit), so let us lead our lives as we see fit. I'm not going to tell you to put down your double cheese burger and beer.

Can we please stop having threads on smoking? I've got no problem with the subject matter, and I'm really not even bothered by seeing the same threads made multiple times. What does bother me, however, is the smugness. The insufferable, arrogant, self-righteous smugness coming from non-smokers that incenses me to the point where I consider driving down to Walgreen's to buy a pack of 54's, so I can start smoking again, just because of the overwhelming spite I feel for people that treat smoking like a choice that is made by lesser people. If you find the habit disgusting, fine, I don't much care for it myself, anymore; but if you have a semi-ranty post about how smokers are evil/stupid, congratulations, you've officially earned the ire of a guy harbors no resentment towards the people that made his life a living hell for several years.

I'm not going to mince words: If you're one of the people I just described, Shut. Up. You can harp on how healthy you are (because you've got marathons to run, apparently), and how second-hand smoke is dangerous (apparently, the outdoors, also known as the only place smokers are seemingly allowed to indulge themselves without being fined, don't do a great job of diffusing such a miniscule volume of particulate), and all these other facts that you read in those obnoxious magazine ads comparing the tobacco industry to Nazis, but guess what? That pat on the back you're giving yourself? You didn't earn it, and stop telling yourself otherwise.

"Congratulations, you don't smoke" is not the theme of any celebratory party I've ever been to. You know what I did today? I decided to cook all of my meals, instead of grabbing fast food. Now, where's my parade? Y'know, a self-congratulatory wankfest of "everybody that eats fast food is a complete monster and an idiot, good thing there are paragons of humanity like me with the sense to eat regular food". Wait, are you only entitled to one of those if you don't smoke? My apologies, I didn't realize that we made exceptions, and tossed each other off for making the utterly mediocre and fairly normal decision to not smoke cigarettes. It's time to face the facts: not smoking doesn't make you an amazing person, it makes you normal, and when you assert that you're somehow better than a smoker, who is still a normal person? Yeah, that's just a completely bogus excuse to go on an exorbitant ego trip, the same way that PETA members consider themselves to be literally better people than omnivores.

Don't try to retort with some anecdotes or statistics regarding how cigarettes are bad, because that's extremely fuckin' redundant. Everybody knows that cigarettes will kill you, especially smokers. There's a big, impossible-to-miss label on the packs that states "the government says you shouldn't do this because it'll fuck you up, but the tobacco companies pay us a lot of money, so we're going to scrape by with a 'maybe you shouldn't' to give the illusion of giving a shit about your well-being". Telling smokers that their habit is unhealthy is a ridiculous idea, because they know even more about the adverse effects than you do, as they're starting to experience them to some degree, and will have it carefully explained to them at every semi-annual visit to the doctor. The fact that they continue to do it anyway doesn't make them stupid or unreasonable. Do you know why that is? Because your view of life is correct only to you. Smoking is a part of a choice one makes in their own lifestyle. They've decided what life means to them, and they're going to live it accordingly. If that means the ride is shorter, so be it. It's shockingly arrogant that you would decide that you understand everything there is to know about the purpose of existence and the true value of life, and then look down on others who see things differently.

Oh, and hey, guess I'd better jump out in front of this one: "smoking doesn't just hurt the smoker, it hurts everyone around them". Yeah, if you're in the same car or room as them, and even then, I sincerely doubt that something that requires a pack a day for forty-some years to start actively killing you is going to give you any serious complications from brief, highly-diluted exposure. Now, there is such a thing as an inconsiderate smoker, the kind of idiot that lights up in a house full of children and pets, but that's not an example of smoking being evil, that's an example of a dickhead who happens to smoke. I don't think coffee drinkers are evil just because most of the people loitering at Starbucks are hipsters in severe need of a beating, and neither do you, so how about some consistency?

tl;dr stop using smokers as a convenient target for your superiority complex and ponce-like tendencies.

It's a major turn off for me. I see nothing attractive about it at all. It also doesn't help that my mom has the beginning stages of emphysema due to smoking.

Smoking killed two of my grandparents, my godfather, and gave my godmother lung cancer. I hate it.

The only reason I can think of for people to smoke is the addiction. Possibly the emotional boost makes sure they can't beat the addiction. So is there any real difference between shooting cocaine and smoking?

  • [li]They both have no real benefit (boosting your emotions doesn't count - everyone lays into the fat people for eating comfort food and the alcoholics for boozing it up, so why not smoking?). Alcohol even has medical benefits in appropriate amounts (e.g. red wine).[/li]
[li]They both have significant problems - they're addictive and they adversely affect your health.[/li]
[li]Cocaine is illegal and smoking isn't... but you have to wonder whether smoking WOULD be legal if it was only getting invented today, and didn't have a historical precedent.[/li]
[li]They both cost tons of money... money which could often be spent on better things! My mom had to grow vegetables and work in the store as a teen to make sure there was food available, because my grandparents would smoke whether there was money for food or not![/li]
[li]They both have potential adverse effects on those around you... who do not share your habits and still have to suffer for 'em.[/li]
Personally, I think it should be banned just like any other non-medicinal drug. But the cigarette companies make enough 'donations' to the politicians to ensure that'll never happen.
Smoking does have some health benefits I pulled it from the wiki page, while the risk out ways the benefits I thought you might like to know.
Benefits
Several types of "Smoker?s Paradoxes", (cases where smoking appears to have specific beneficial effects), have been observed.

Risk of ulcerative colitis has been frequently shown to be reduced by smokers on a dose-dependent basis; the effect is eliminated if the individual stops smoking.
Smoking appears to interfere with development of:
Kaposi's sarcoma
breast cancer among women carrying the very high risk BRCA gene
Pre-eclampsia
atopic disorders such as allergic asthma
A plausible mechanism of action in these cases may be the nicotine in tobacco smoke acting as an anti-inflammatory agent and interfering with the disease process.

Smoking can also reduce rates of uterine fibroids. This may be due to estrogen inhibition, as opposed to general inhibition of inflammation.

I find that a lot of girls I would consider hot turn out to be smokers (or potheads, but that's a different story). That said, nothing turns me on my heel 180° and get the hell outta there so much as noticing a white stick in her hand. Makes me sad that these hot girls will look older than my 50+ mom in a matter of years...

Oh yeah, and even though I am less than a fan of smoking, I too am sick of smoking threads. They create too much drama and hate. OK?

I don't think either. I have no problem with people smoking, as long as they don't blow it in my face or anything. Just crack open a window and it's all good. If people want to do it, then let them.
This. Even before I smoked, I had no problem with people doing it as long as they didn't do anything with it to piss me off

Turn off for me. One of the things I look for is non-smoker. I don't like the smell, and due to my sensitive sense of smell, it really bothers me.

Neither. Don't really care either way.

Quick question everyone. Why is it ok to hate smokers, but not ok to hate fat people? Seriously

While I'm at it, I'd like to point out that you people who preach constantly about smoking KEEP people smoking because it's so fucking annoying. Every time someone tells me I'm stupid, or I hear a commercial about how I'm somehow murdering babies and I'm a horrible person that no one will ever love, every time someone yells about it while I'm walking down the street or starts talking shit about smokers in classes, I light up a cigarrette.

Stupid? Yes. But if there's one thing all people hate, it's being patronized. You all have similar reactions to other things every day and if any of you smoked you would do the exact same thing. So please, stop being jackasses.
