Noir wouldn't be wear it was if it wasn't for the classic imagery of smoking detectives. But that's because in noir movies everything's so freaking dark and a thin trail of smoke is an incredibly beautiful contrast.

As for being cool or not, who really cares? While there's various bits and pieces of evidence indicating that second hand smoke probably causes damage, I haven't heard a whole lot in the way of conclusive YES IT DOES evidence nor a whole lot, honestly, that it causes significant damage. Regardless, it's nothing that should be banned everywhere. I can see banning it in the work place, but a forced ban on bars and restaurants? That's their choice. Most will end up banning it anyways because it's bad for business and, honestly, smoking smells like shit when you aren't smoking, but that should be the business's decision and, by extension int his case, the people's extension not the government's.

However, for the people comparing the dangers of smoking to the dangers of eye strain, you're either deluding yourself or trying to compare an elephant to a mouse. Straining at a computer screen does indeed hurt your eyes and will damage your vision. Smoking will give you cancer and cancer will pretty regularly kill you and tea bag your corpse. If you want to smoke and are aware of the risks, that's fine, but don't try to underplay them in public when that's just not the truth. And that's the same with drinking, drinking heavily will tear up your liver and liver failure is the fast track to painful death.

I think the first two go hand in hand, you don't wash you smell bad... but i don't think smoking has ever stopped anyone from washing... and smoking doesnt make you look unwashed either to be honest.
Yes it does. Well, unless you take a bath after every smoke. Otherwise, not only will your breath smell of decomposing flesh, but so will your hair, clothes, hands...etc.

And as for 20 years older, sign me up for looking 40 geez! Might mean I can get a job as "being old=getting good job" even if they are grossly underskilled... the ass-hats of employment for you! And then it would stop the getting ID'd everywhere I go.

I think the looking 20 years older clinches it, time for me to pick up smoking!
Yeah, that only works if your ID can prove the age you claim. But hey, I have nothing against people poisoning themselves, it's a favor they do to me. As Dirty Harry would put it: "Go ahead punk, make my day!".

Smelly, pointless, harmful, expensive, irritating.

I am so incredibly pleased the smoking ban came to to the UK, it beats having to go home and spend 40minutes in the shower every night to get the smell out your hair.

I think most smokers never notice a smell,And a sense of what you find as a pleasurable smell changes person to person. Some people like the smell of cloves some don't. Some guys love girls who wear cheap perfume some guys don't etc..etc.. I think the idea that all smokers are "unwashed" bum's or just trying to be "cool" is a pretty insulting stereotype.

You should add the option "I don't care".

Personally, It depends on the person's choice. If he wants to smoke even if he knows the risks of smoking. Let him smoke. Vice-Versa.

Note* I say the word risk, because the word danger means "likely" death. Risk is actually more accurate.
well i pretty much agree with you.

Does a junkie notice the needle stings? Hardly. And yes, smokers are junkies. Nicotine is a drug. One that creates dependency.

And yeah, I don't honestly care... My own mother smokes, I love her, but I do remind her often that every time she puffs one of those shits she smells like rotten ass like everyone else that does it.

As for being "cool", sadly most people DO start that way, but remain smokers due to the addiction.

No, smoking is not cool, but if people want to smoke, than it's fine with me, as long as they don't smoke into my face like in those fucking waiting lobbies. But if a person has like a child, than I think he/she should take responsibility in avoiding smoking for the sake of the child's safety/future (if a parent dies from smoking, what would happen to the child?). People say that it's hard quiting smoking, but it quite frankly is not.

Since the price for ciggarettes in the UK is quite high, my mom asked me to buy her a couple of packets of cigars back from home. I didn't, because I wanted her to stop smoking. She was completely fine. My mom is a person who works from six o' clock in the morning up 'till nine o' clock in the evening, has 2 jobs and told me that not once did she neeed a smoke. So unless you're just smoking for pleasure (when there are other ways of doing that, mine jakcing off) there really isn't much point in smoking. Then again its your life, but don't go smoking in an area that's crowded with non-smokers, because it also damages their health. Same goes if you have kids.

Well I live in BC Canada and here at least 95% of kids smoked weed in school and the ones who didnt would if they we offered because everyone did it, kinda the definition of cool. Personally I think cigs are nasty as hell but I did use to smoke them when I was snowboarding and was freezing my ass off on the chair lift.

So why is the crusade only against Nicotine, Not Caffeine? Which has been proven to increase the risk of, Cardiovascular Problems, Emotional Disturbances, Blood Sugar Swings, Gastrointestinal Problems,Nutritional Deficiencies, Male and Female Health issues, Adrenal Exhaustion, Severe Blood Sugar Swings, and Acid Imbalance. Also Caffeine can create dependency as well it is common for people who stop drinking Caffeine to have withdraws?

There is no doubt that smoking isn't the healthiest thing,However when you think about compared to other drugs on the market the have the same or worse effects on the human body when taking over a long period it does not make sense smoking is regarded as such a vile act, Other then that "stereotyping" is the now "cool" thing to do.

P.S I think by me smoking one pack a month, I am in far less danger then people who drink regular amounts of caffeine daily to my zero intake of caffeine.

Because drinking a coffee only bothers you. Smoking a cigarette bothers everyone else around you. It's bleeding obvious really.

PS: I'm also against coffee and I don't drink it either.

So anything that can bother or make someone uncomfortable should be regarded as vile? Because for every smoker who is rude and bothers people there is three smokers who try to avoid smoking around people who do not want them to.

Actually, it makes you smell like...cigarettes. If you've ever actually smelled decomposing flesh, it's not quite the same.

And as for making people look 20 years older, I'd say that's kind of an overstatement. You might be thinking of something else, like meth. I'm not denying that smoking for an extended period of time will make you age faster, but the notion that lighting a cigarette will make you look 40 at 20 is fairly deceiving.

Anyway, I smoke, and I'm a pretty uncool guy. As for whether or not it makes you cool, I'm living proof it doesn't, but that said, most of the cool people smoke. I say this, because after reading through this thread, it seems most of the people who don't smoke are pricks.

Oh, and I watched my grandmother die of cancer, so spare me the "wait til you get cancer LULZ!!!111one" comments.

Anything that affects other people, specially their health (like, second hand smoke)and not be avoided, yes.

I have no beef with people who don't bother me with their smoke. They wanna kill themselves, why should I care? It only becomes my problem when they make it so.

I actually have, and it is pretty similar, although, admittedly, not as strong, but just as fetid.

I'm aware of that, but chronic use does. How many smokers smoke for a couple days only?

Funny, so have I. Been a year since this past October. So? I think you missed my point. My point isn't "AHAHA UR ALL STOOPIDZ!" or anything. My point is simple and clear: Don't bug me with it and I don't care what you do. Is it stupid? Yes. Infinitely. Is it my business? As long as you smoke away from me so I don't have to smell it: No. Wanna kill yourself slowly and painfully? Your life, your call.

I don't find smoking cool, but I don't consider it uncool either....actually, it is uncool but only because it really harmful for your health, and also it makes you stink and have bad breath, and BLACK lungs...and so on

True story:

Wow... she's cute. I wonder... Aw bummer. She's smoking.

It's just a turn off for me. It smells bad, it ruins your voice over the years, and it causes cancer.
