I think they blame games because you do questionable things in them. For Example: Modern Warfare 2's mission in the airport.
Too many people are too stupid to believe that some people are capable of such actions. So they blame outside stimuli. First it was metal/rock(a.k.a. the devils work), then movies came up, and finally now it's video games just because it's the latest trend and you control the actions of the main character(unlike movies).
Sure people played games before, but now it's so wide spread and far more violent. But even after playing Gears, GTA IV, MW 2... etc. I have not felt the urge or desire nor have I gone out and chainsawed someone into bits, drove my car down a heavily occupied sidewalk, or for that matter walked into an airport with light machine gun and started shooting up the place. In fact most people that do shit like this have not played games, and dare I say? even heard of them. Just ask Jack The Ripper, I'm sure games did not existed during his era. Or Jeffrey Dahmer, I'm pretty sure he wouldn't(and didn't) blame games or that there isn't a single game where you get to cannibalize another person.
The media just needs an outlet to blame someone for horrendous crimes because apparently it never happened until music, movies, and games came out. So out of fear and ignorance they blame games.
Overall I'm not at all concerned because the government will never ban it. They get too much tax money from it, think about it millions of copies of one game sold(here in Canada the tax is 13% and games are $59.99). Just as well companies with enough money and influence, will always sway the law in their favor and us consumers. I mean look at tobacco and alcohol, both are known to be bad and eventually kill you. Alcohol causes people to react without thinking, wife beaters or hell even rapists for an example(not my opinion, but most everyone accepts this as fact). Yet no one has banned it. Wait scratch that. America did ban alcohol, but we've all seen how well that went. Also people like that psychiatrist are a dying breed. Soon everyone(with access to games that is) will have at least played a game... If not own one.
Now taking a chance to look back at all I have written, all I can say is this: FUCK!!! I talk too much. But intellectual debates always did interest me. Well those that have a merit in fact anyway...
