Well, I usually prefer fantasy to sci-fi, and this is no exception, LOTR all the way. Though Star Wars is superb too.

Empire Strikes Back is my favourite film of all time, but then Return of the King is second, so it's not a huge difference.

This is like trying to make me choose between boobs and cheese, in that they're both fantastic.

Of course, my comparison is based solely on the Original Trilogies of each franchise, and not including anything outside of them. Scales are looking to tip in LoTR's favour when The Hobbit is released in December.

I'm gonna have to vote Lord of the Rings as well. I was never a huge Star Wars fan, and love the LOTR books and films.

This is something that will be a constant battle within my mind. It will never end. It will never be decided.

Taking only into consideration the original works created by Tolkien and Lucas everything about LOTR is better in every way with the exception of lightsabers. SW has lightsabers that the likes of Sting and the other fancy swords can't hope to match. However that is not exactly an important criteria to judge a work of fiction on. Also I prefer my adventure stories to be in a fantasy setting rather than a Sci-Fi setting.

It becomes a little more interesting when you take into consideration the expanded universe or works inspired by the original books/film. I would say LOTR/Tolkien has had a much more broad impact on the fantasy genre than SW/Lucas has had on his medium. However SW has more successful works directly related to the franchise (KOTR series, Acadamey, slew of other things). Still I would say LOTR is better in this regard as well.

Stawr Wawrs - I misspelled Star and decided to leave it like that.

I honestly think that Lord of the Rings is better but Star Wars simply appeals to me more.

Lord of the Rings, I prefer the story much more and while Star Wars does have a very large and interesting universe, it also has Jarjar Binks, and for that reason it definitely loses to LOTR

Even with the prequels, I'm surprised LOTR is leading by as much as it is.
Still I'd have to go with Tolkien myself. Even if I'm only going by original trilogies, Star Wars just didn't have the same level of impact. I could watch all three Star Wars in a day (and I have) But I'd definitely have to pace myself with LOTR.

Lord of the Rings. Loved all 3 of them. Of course I never watched a Star Wars film so its the only option I can choose.

I should've been more clear. I never did watch a Star Wars film for more then an hour as it could not keep me interested(I only tried watching 2 of the prequels and 1 of the older, "better" ones). YAAAWN-O-RAMA.

I'm going to assume that this question encompasses all that comprises each franchise (books, games, movies, offshoots, etc.). In that case...

Lord of the Rings.

Reasons... well
1) Like most here, I prefer fantasy to science fiction in most cases.
2) I've never really gotten deep into Star Wars.
3) I prefer the asthetics of Middle Earth that have been derived from PJ's movies.
4) The bad guys are... well... more threatening.
5) I can appreciate the importance/personality of the various locations.
6) Peter Jackson and his movies.

In terms of pure cultural and cinema influence, few can hold a candle to Star Wars.
Lord of the Rings, however, for special effects, is a phenomenon.
I'm not a huge fan of either of them. But I'd rather watch Star Wars.

Lord of the rings.
I prefer fantasy to sci-fi.
I thought the LotR movies were a lot better.
I love the LotR and Hobbit books, but never once have I seriously had the notion 'Hey, I'm going to go read more star wars!'

"Look, there's only one 'Return' and it ain't 'of the King'-- it's 'of the Jedi'"
Star Wars (original trilogy) all the way. LotR was good, but had nowhere near the same impact as Star Wars had on me.
