honestly, i wish people would stop switching heroes skin colour around like it matters one way or another, just go with whatever is cannon for the story

i'm not sure of the spider-man situation exactly, but it's happening more often, especially with superheroes or tv characters
switching them around repeatedly in different universes and worlds and acting like it's an invisible change just makes race seem like an almost dirty subject that nobody dares talk about
and that you have to have some kind of mystical balance or it's some kind of implied race-hate it's rather silly as a concept in all honesty

any race will do for a hero, but keep it consistent is my verdict.

Do you know what I really fucking hate when it comes to comics? When a character is replaced by a new minority character and readers get all up in arms about how the company is pandering to enforced diversity or some such shit, but don't complain when the white dude gets replaced by another white dude.

Hell, even if this new Spider-man was created just to be diverse...so fucking what? That doesn't mean he can't be an interesting character and have interesting stories told about him. DC could be seen to have tried this tactic several times in the past and the newer ethnically diverse characters of Green Arrow, Blue Beetle, Firestorm, The Atom and Batgirl (to use a few examples) were way cooler than their previous counterparts.

I want an Asian spiderman.

But that aside, I hope they'll still have him delivering those hilarious sarcastic punchlines that was so characteristic of Parker. For me, that MADE the franchise.

I thought I'd felt a great disturbance in the force earlier today. Like a thousand angry fanboys all cried out at once. It's always funny to watch the comic book crowd rage so hard over a character change before they've even got their hands on the story. Besides, it's ONE continuity amongst the cluster-fuck that the comics industry laughably refers to as deep. I don't even understand how they can continue to survive. I mean they've made so many alternate universes for their characters that by now the stories have to all be starting to look the same.

I like that Marvel did it in their sandbox universe rather than the main one. "Just in case this diversity thing doesn't work, it isn't gonna be a problem for us." Marvel sucks, always has, always will.

I was ok with most of these people saying "How dare they kill off Spiderman..." but what in all that is fucking holy is the "...And replaced him with a black guy" shit about?

WHY is this second part at all important? While I don't personally mind in the slightest that they killed off PP, I get the anger at that, hes a loved character and people want him to stay. #But the fact that his replacement is a black guy? So? Honestly, even if its a cheap play at Racial equality why is this bad? I can't think of a SINGLE reason why it HAS to be a white guy.

I don't get a single non racist reason anyone has a Ruined FOREVER [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/RuinedFOREVER] reason why a black spiderman, even if its a cheap ploy is a problem.

It adds nothing and takes nothing away. Its just a skin colour and a background.
It's not the skin colour that's the problem. It's that the skin colour as well as the character himself are being shoehorned in. Usually in the comics when a person takes up the mantle of a superhero, it's someone who's been established. It could be a sidekick, a family member or even a crazed admirer/imposter but what sets those examples apart from this new character is that they would all have been featured in the comics before, no matter how small the capacity.

With this new guy they're pretty much saying "Here's a new person with the same powers as an established superhero who got his powers in a freak accident, and just to show how accepting we are of all peoples we're gonna make him black/hispanic and have him date a chinese jew."

It's strange how this just feels like it has the vein of the creators having one of three thoughts;

1. We need something controversial to get the fans' attention.
2. We need to gain more minority readers.
3. We need to look like we're showing more ethnic diversity.

It doesn't feel like they actually want to create a new and meaningful character. It feels like they just want another minority. If they did they would have created a new hero from scratch, instead of create a new character who is going to simply be going through the motions of being Spiderman. Because he's either going to be completely like Peter Parker, or he's going to be totally different.

If he's identical, then it's just a blatant pandering along racial lines which makes this beyond disgusting.
If he's totally different, then why kill Peter Parker and replace him? Why not just make a new hero?

So long as he's a good character and throwing webs doesn't look like he's throwing gang-signs, I'm fine with it.

The thing I have an issue with is Spider-man is one-of-a-kind (forgetting the clones). Not even the Hulk or Captain America, who are also borne of accident/sabotage are free of people that have inherited similar abilities by getting their hands on their super-catalyst. Spidey isn't like Batman, being able to just hand over his cowl to a worthy successor. He was genetically altered through a chance encounter. Replicating those circumstances would be next to impossible. Someone taking up the webs after Parker dies seems contrived.

Nothing wrong with superheroes of all races but honestly, why do they do this?

They take pre-existing heroes and change their ethnicity. They did it with the Green Lantern, and sure it didn't take away from the action, but you don't have to change a character just to fit diversity. Just make some new ones of different races.

It's not wrong, it's just not canonical.
BS. When they're writing new stories they're free to introduce new characters. And *gasp* the new characters don't have to all be white. It's not a retcon, it's a new character. It's canonical.
Dude, cut the sarcasm. You basically just made my point for me, then treated me like an asshole for not agreeing with it. I said I'm fine with heroes being any ethnicity, but once a fictional character is created, changing their race will destroy the character.

As far as I'm concerned, this is the same thing. They just decided to kill off Parker so they could get away with it.

It'd be just as ridiculous if they made a non-white hero into a white hero. Race is too much of a character's identity to play shuffle with; that is my point. Not that all superheroes should be some idealistic Nazi Master Race.

Successor? Fine. Story wise I dont know, but as long as its a different person, then just make it work. I just cant stand altering the actual character. Peter Parker is a white kid.

So it IS about his skin colour. You missed my point, my point is while the fact that Spiderman changed SHOULD be the debate, the fact he's Black Hispanic is the point people are focusing on (this topic is called "So the new spider man is half black, half hispanic ,what do you think escapist.")for No, and i mean zero reason. Get mad about them killing peter, get mad about the new Spiderman not fitting, be mad about the random Retcon, but why, WHY are most of these people whining because he Happens to not be a white guy? I can't get my head round why people are dragging some ridiculous, pointless and in a few cases massively Racist(see the Thor shit)argument into one that in no way needs one. Its not important, This is not the 50's Unless the persons Race/Sex/Sexuality/nationality is a KEY part of the character then who fucking cares what the Random race/sex wheel of chance picks. Fuck Id accept Superman being a bloody Yupik or Inuit if the story was Good.

Complain that Parker is dead, Complain that they Ruined it FOREVER because its not Parker. But because the Masked super hero happens to have more melanin in it then before Don't start acting like they made him a pedophile.

I understand what you mean, but how about if I phrase it like this:

Introducing a character who is black/hispanic/whatever - No problem.
Introducing a character because s/he is black/hispanic/whatever - Problem.

While I get that people have problems with it for different reasons, for me personally it just seems like Marvel are trying too hard to diversify. Other than that I couldn't really give a shit what colour or nationality a superhero is.

Understand what I mean?

EDIT: And I am a little annoyed that they killed off Peter Parker. The dude WAS Spiderman, it just seems....wrong.

That does not really work either, DC and marvel have been pulling random replace/murder stunts for years, look at Hal Jordan, I doubt honestly they sad down and thought "Know what everyone will love? Lets kill off one of our most loved stars so we can put a black guy in his place". More along the lines of "Know what will get people talking about our comics? Lets kill of Peter Parker" I doubt they had any designed for his replacement before the original idea for some Parker based murder death came to one of them in a bar/Horrid meeting.

It was most likely done to make money/Raise awareness of the brand rather than as some "BS LEFTY CONSPIRACY" (I know this is not you, but god have i seen this a lot.)

and on you're edit, My Beef was with how most of the reaction is annoyed that Spiderman is BLACK rather than Spiderman is Dead. Hell look at the topic name...

Personally the only marvel heroes I like are the core cast of the Avengers, but the only marvel heroes I actually HATE are the X-men and Fantastic Four (not just because of their shitty movies, either).

But if I may give my two cents on this:

Comic book diversity done right: War Machine. He's a compelling character who is able to stand on his own and even take over for Tony when Tony is off being... Tony. He may not be the main character, but he's no side-kick. I don't actually know if he ever had his own comic series, but if he did I'd sure as hell check it out.

Comic book diversity done wrong: Killing off the white main character and then bringing in a brand-new different ethnicity character from out of nowhere and having him suddenly become the same superhero as the dead main guy. It just reeks of pandering.
