1) one of the Spider man universes is called 616 ...? Also known as the number of the beast. (there is an argument over whether it is 666 or 616)

2) there's more than one universe...? To use a saying coined on this site, "COMICS ARE WEIRD".

As long as there is a good reason why Peter Parker is no longer spider man, where is the problem? As long as it doesn't turn into a "we have to have more racially diverse super hero's so lets write 5 or 6 story lines to change previous white super hero's into different races".

voted - I dont care
If the guy is just a black peter parker, it'll be a pointless gesture, and i wont be happy.
if he's a totally new personality from pp, different personal values etc, i think its a good bold move.
when i say bold move, i mean killing pp, not black spiderman.

Okay let explain first marvel comics has 2 universes the 616(the regular one)and the ultimate, in the ultimate universe peter parker(spiderman) died about a month ago, today have been revealed that his successor is half black, half hispanic Miles Morales.

http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showthread.php?t=379006

so what the problem? that comics fan have pretty much gone nuts over this. Some say that this is good thing and other say that this is bullshit and killing peter parker just to put a black person as spiderman is wrong.

oh and before somebody ask dead in the ultimate universe is permanent so far.
I do have a bit of a problem with changing the racial identity of Peter Parker. Not so much because I don't agree with the idea of racial equality, but because it smacks of forced Political Correctness, and there is no real logical reason to do it other than for its own sake.

It's sort of like how I view Spawn. I have always viewed Al Simmons as Black and I would probably have the same negative reaction if they decided to change his character to White or Asian. It's just not necessary... at all.

Doesn't effect me because I'm not going to watch it. I'm done with spiderman altogether. I watched the animated TV show in the 90's, watched the trillogy in the 00's, and after the crappy third movie I do not care. NOPE. NO CARE ME DON'T.

THey can make Spiderman a burly pitch black Jamacan for all I care now. I've hand my fun and now I'm going to do what I normally do, watch Transformers G1 and play video games.

PEACE!

Racists are gonna race (see what I did there?). But I think a lot of people couldn't give two shits about the new spidey's ethnicity and are instead taking umbrage b/c he just, well, fucking died.

People have to understand that Spider Man, like Superman, is not only a character but also an archetype and an institution of sorts, and by Spider Man I mean Peter Parker. Had they instead acted as if he had died and then found a replacement to take on the official mantle, kinda how they did a while back with Ben Reilly, or how they did when they made Jean Paul Valley become Batman, or when there were a bunch of Supermen flying around, after the original one died, etc., people wouldn't be so bothered, I think.

Really? And what makes you think that white is, or should be, the default setting for Spider Man when it isn't even the same character? As long as they don't suddenly change Parker's ethnicity I don't see how your argument has any substance to it.

Think about it: Would it be different to you if they instead went for some 'Ethan Stanford' kid that happened to be white? Would that bother you?

it seems like somebody is trying to win the Racial Acceptance reward!
but seriously, fuck you marvel. Not only do you feel it necessary to reboot and likely murder my favorite superhero, but you're doing it just so you can make the Avengers movie, which I get the feeling will be crap anyway
Sony own the rights to the spiderman movie franchise. they're rebooting because they lose the rights after the IP has been unused for a certain amount of time and Rami n Maguire are out of any sequels. its not marvels idea to reboot, as the reboot means they can't have spiderman in their avengers movie as they can't reclaim the rights. similar with Fox and the xmen reboot.

Allrighty then. Here's my 2c on the new Spiderman : Whatever.
Was it necessary to kill off peter parker? You kinda burned your own bridge there marvel, if this doesn't work out. What are you going to do then? Kill Miles(new spiderman) too and replace him with a german/asian/jew/Cyborg-hybrid?

See, i don't read Spiderman much, and this still doesn't make me buy spiderman. So your plan kinda failed on me marvel. better luck next time.

It could be interesting, but i'm having this James Rhodes/War Machine idea in my head.
Peter'll be back at some point, and this dude will be Ultimate Tarantula...or something.

Or he'll be an awesome Spider-Man in his own right, like Miguel proved to be in 2099.

its times like this that i prefer to turn to our good friend batgirl.

the original batgirl, Barabara Gordon was white.
and then she was crippled by the joker and years later was replaced with the second batgirl, Cassandra Cain, who was (at least part, and depicted mostly as) Asian.
then years later, Cassandra was replaced with Stephanie Brown, who is a white skinned blond girl.

and surprisingly enough, (most) readers ended up liking all three of them during their turn in the role.
why ?
because they ended up being awesome CHARACTERS.

if this new Spidy is a good character, then this is a good move.
if he sucks as a character then its a shitty move.
unfortunately, black characters sometimes suck as characters, because (bad) writers tend to treat "blackness" as if its already a CHARACTER trait and don't always expend much beyond it.
here's hoping this isn't one of these cases.

I don't care.

What interests me, though, is how they made another Spider-Man. What are the odds of there being another angsty teenage science genious bitten by a genetically altered spider?

When I herd they were going to make Peter Parker black I raged a little bit. Now that they're introducing him as a new character I don't care. I still leaves me asking why don't they make up new black superheros instead of doing weird things like this?

Then why post in a the thread then? Doesn't interest you, then don't post saying that it doesn't interest you, simple as that. Same goes to the rest of y'all posting similar posts.

On-Topic: Eh... I see it as kind of a quick shallow leap to add diversity, nothing against Miles, he just ain't Pete.
the question was, what do you think escapist? i am one of the escapist, that is what i think.

Fair enough, but, I see it as having no interest in something like Beethoven's music, and then clicking on one of his symphonies on youtube, just to say that you don't want to hear the song, because it doesn't interest you.

The character being black/hispanic isnt the issue. Just how shoe horned it has been added. I think all white people have been guilted in anti racism stuff since the 60's. Back then it was great because they should be treated as equal. Now there is a black american president...the highest position ever in the world. Now making a character black for the lulz is disrespectful to black people. Look at Blade? Black vampire killer. Great character and story. Making him white for the sake of making him white would be an insult. It belittles the character and the race. Now if a friend of Blade/Spiderman was of the opposite colour and took over the mantel out of respect of continuing the work then fine. Its realistic and their is a reason for it.

I just think there is a "white mans guilt" in effect when it shouldnt be. Unless of course we think Obama become president because of his skin colour?

White character becomes black (spiderman) - should be accepted. Its diversity.
Black character becomes white (Blade) - major racist issues. How dare they.

No one has a colour issue. Saying it is belittles the issue. Its making the character real and whoever takes over real. What if in the new series of House it was a black doctor for no real reason? Thats the issue. Its changing something for the sake of it and not realisticly.

Give me a black hero (like Blade) thats true. Has heart and is original. Give it good writing and he will be loved. Making a "black spiderman" for no real reason is wrong and belittles the character and black people in general. Look at Storm.....great character.

I was ok with most of these people saying "How dare they kill off Spiderman..." but what in all that is fucking holy is the "...And replaced him with a black guy" shit about?

WHY is this second part at all important? While I don't personally mind in the slightest that they killed off PP, I get the anger at that, hes a loved character and people want him to stay. #But the fact that his replacement is a black guy? So? Honestly, even if its a cheap play at Racial equality why is this bad? I can't think of a SINGLE reason why it HAS to be a white guy.

I don't get a single non racist reason anyone has a Ruined FOREVER [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/RuinedFOREVER] reason why a black spiderman, even if its a cheap ploy is a problem.

It adds nothing and takes nothing away. Its just a skin colour and a background.

Honestly, there has been so much piss poor crap done to signature heroes over the years and retcons (wolverine and spider man being two of the biggest offenders) that this doesn't even register on the "canon destruction" meter for me.

here's the thing: the guys who write the ultimate spiderman comics are GOOD. very good. so if they decide to kill off peter parker and replace him with someone else, that's fine. i trust them.beside's: new character can mean new dilemma's and problems( difficult home life anyone>)

... what's that? the new spiderman is half hispanic, half black?

.... so? again, more new plot points: i can almost sense a romeo-and-juliet thing going on with miles parents. and maybe they can deal with RACISM! he has it especially bad- half Latino, half black? ouch.

also: can anyone else see him giving out to a superhero or someone at some point for being half latino, half black? because, y'know, i think they'll be shocked and appalled that someone who isn't white is spiderman- after all, they're not racist! it's just that peter parker was white, so naturally, the new guy should be white as well!

and finally: if miles doesn't crack wise like peter did, i think i might cry. i get that miles might not be a wise-crack kinda guy, but spiderman just isn't the same if he doesn't throw out a few spider-zingers!
