As a half black half hispanic guy who's always felt a little bummed that all the established superheroes with cool backstories were all white... I approve of this decision wholeheartedly. I've always wanted a Spider-Man of my very own. Whenever they try to make a new black hero, we get some bull-poo like Cardiac, or that Hotspot/Joto dude from Titans. Besides, why does DC get to have a monopoly on legacy heroes? Just let me have this one, nobody but me was reading USM anyways.

I enjoy comic books, but Spiderman has been a joke for a few decades now. That and it's only the Ultimate universe, so no real harm done.

It'll be weird if anything, I liked Peter. But if he's well written then I wont complain.

Human races do not exist. As soon as you've put this american obsession in perspective, discussions about what features has or hasn't such character become quite irrelevant.

Meh. I stopped caring about the Ultimates universe when I heard Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver were bonking. And that Magneto was f**king bonkers. And that everyone besides the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man and Tony Stark are assholes.

Don't mind the new Spider-Man, though. Kinda want to know what his origins are.

Blatant pandering is blatant.
That said, I see no reason why this new character couldn't work out. Give him a chance, I say.

I feel reminded of the very first episode of Boston Legal, where reverend Al Sharpton barges into a courtroom and, in addressing an equal opportunity issu, drops the line, "Give us an African-American Spider-Man!"

Nothing wrong with superheroes of all races but honestly, why do they do this?

They take pre-existing heroes and change their ethnicity. They did it with the Green Lantern, and sure it didn't take away from the action, but you don't have to change a character just to fit diversity. Just make some new ones of different races.

It's not wrong, it's just not canonical.
The entire Ultimate universe is a different canon. This is a different storyline.

Can we replace "I don't care" with "It doens't matter", because if you don't care you won't click on it.

Anyway, the justification for that is, it isn't better or worse if the spiderman is white nor if he is "half black, half hispanic". Becuase in this case it's highly unlikely race will matter. Only if there was a MAJOR change to the story and race was the reason would there be any reason to argue.

They didn't really do it with Green Lantern but. Hal Jordan still existed in the same "universe" they just made another Green Lantern character who was black.

OT This feels more like an attention grab. If they wanted to make a new hero who had these traits then cool but snuffing out a well known existing one and replacing him with a character made up like this doesn't seem very smooth, especially when a year ago there was a big debate about making Spider-man black in the movie.... I dunno, I could just be seeing things that aren't there.

My big problem with this is pretty simple.

A second spiderman?

I mean Captain America, or Batman make sense. The are images, a symbol, but most importantly they are results. Spiderman was an accident. He got his powers when he was accidently bitten by a spider.

How do you justify another character donning his costume and suffering the same "accident" it wasn't like project rebirth gave birth to spidey, or his years of training made him into a web slinger. It was a lab mishap.

How can you replace him?

Spidey doesn't have a Bucky, or a Robin. He is a confused teen with superhuman abilities.

I don't see a problem at all. I'm usually a little edgy over race change in adaptations but this? It's taking it in a new direction which I'm welcoming.

It's the Ultimates. Not only is the entire point of the series to allow Marvel to fuck around and do stupid shit like this, but it's a horrible series anyway.

Anybody who has a problem with this either doesn't understand what the Ultimates is, or is a racist.

A comic book making a ridiculous rehash of a money making machine?

MY GOD! Since when!?!?

I don't think you can compare Green Lantern to Spider Man in that regard. There have been several (7 i think?!) Green Lanterns over the years but only one Spider Man since 62' so the change is a bit "bigger".

PS: Don't really care about the change just think it's good they killed Parker off first and didn#t just change him (which would truly only be for diversities sake)

I rather like the idea of a black Spider-Man, at least in principal. The overwhelming majority of the top flight superheroes are white, so getting a little diversity in there is a good thing, even if it is just in a pocket universe that isn't the "official" continuity. Of course, whether it's a really positive change will depend on how good the writing is.

A) I love the fact that the ethnicity of comics characters is getting more diverse.
B) I don't love the fact that Marvel seems like they would rather cram a bunch of minorities together into one character to appeal to a bunch of people at once than create a meaningful character with a believable background. Making the new Spiderman half black and half hispanic looks to be a decision rooted less in 'We can tell cool stories with this guy!' and more in 'this way black people AND hispanic people will be interested in Spiderman now!'

It's the Ultimate series, so it isn't like Peter Parker is truly dead *wipes brow*. In any case I think this looks rather interesting and I look forward to reading a few issues.
