Poll: Sonic Ideas

Everyone knows that the latest attempt at a Sonic 3D game, "Sonic Unleashed", has failed horribly.

So the question now is "What should happen to the franchise?"

The Sonic games on the Genesis (Mega Drive) were some of my favorites of that console generation, and I even bought the PS2 Sonic Anthology game so I could play them on my PS2 and PS3 when my Genesis died.

I personally think that they should rip off Capcom's idea (Mega Man 9), by making 2D "classic" Sonic Games that can be downloaded via XBLA, PSN, Wii Ware and PC for $10 or so.

Just let me know what you think about my idea, or feel free to add some of your own.

Personally, I don't think Sonic Unleashed was a complete loss. Yes, the werehog levels were an affront to the sensibilities, but the Sonic levels were fast, fun and colorful. Everything a modern Sonic title should be, in other words. They weren't perfect, but they were a step in the right direction, and certainly better than Sonic's latest 3D outings.

Given that, I'd say the best way to go would be to make another Unleashed title, cut out the werehog bits and focus on tightening up the gameplay as Sonic.

Alternatively, I like your idea of Sega making a retro title. Of course, it'd take a pretty skilled development team to make it feel like something other than Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Zone Expansion Pack, but it could be done.

the franchise should be axed I dont like the sonic games and I hope that when they realise that others dont that they will get rid of it and start something new and GOOD.

I liked old Sonic and the foray into 3D has been hell for him, but maybe they should focus on what made the series great rather than gimmicks like the werehog.
I know they won't change, but I do feel that both Sonic and Mario have been milked past their prime.

when i was little, sonic was one of my favorite games, but has been lost in the modern gaming era, sonic had a good run and now its time for him to die, while he still has a bit of dignity

What's wrong with Sonic Rush and Sonic Rush Adventure? Do they somehow "not count" just because they're on a handheld?

We've seen it already. 2.5D gameplay is the way to go.

Sonic in 2D High Definition download stand alone title for XBL and/or PSN would be great. No new characters, no humans ('Cept Robotnik/Eggman), 16-Bit gameplay with todays powerfull consoles.

It can be done, and it would not hurt SEGA.

Eh, kill the big boy titles and go the way of Castlevania, making similar yet awesome games for the Handheld systems.

with the way they are going it would probably be best to kill the franchise. part of the problem seems to be that it is 3D. if they can bring back what they had with the 2D games and take it back to its roots it could be good again.

The Sonic Team should make some good downloadable 2D Sonic games and that's it. If we start killing franchises we should start with Mario or Zelda.

It was originally Dr Kintobor, before the accident changed him into Robotnik. Then that whole backstory was retconned during the Dreamcast era, and now we're left with something confusing. Yuji Naka has explained that Robotnik is the character's real name while Eggman is a sort-of nickname - this was also explained in the character profile for Robotnik in Sonic Chronicles on the DS. It should also be noted that he has always been called Eggman in Japan.

With regards to the original question, if Sonic Team were to make short WiiWare-style games based on the standard Sonic levels from Sonic Unleashed, I could see them doing very well indeed.
