So far more than 50% of you says leave it at 2D gameplay, but I refuse to think this game cannot exist in a 3D world! Just because you've been let down so many times, don't let that break your spirit! If you give up, then the terrorists over at Sonic Team have won!

Lets keep it to 2D, or leave it for a while, like some years and then make a new 3D sonic game

I'd stick with Sonic's gameplay from Sonic Adventure, plus Tails and Knuckles (with their respective abilities) as playable characters. 10 Two Act levels with varying fantasy locals.

That, or they could just keep making Secret Rings, because that game rocked.

Where's"The all of the above" option on the vote?

Seriously i love Sonic to death but Sonic Team need to do something to save him. Hopefully Black Knight can be the first step.

They have had years to get the formula right, its like a 70 year old guy trying to take college classes in order to get a better career, the time has passed attempts have failed it is time to throw in the towel. The only reason why Sonic is still alive because some people have an unexplainable affection for the blue hedgehog and his pack of neon colored furries...wait a minute... its the furries it is always the furries!

I think that Sonic's inherent problem is that it is damn near impossible to make a blue hedgehog look all that good in 3D. Mario went so well because he's a man and we've pretty much got those sorted now.
Game developers have also had the second major problem of trying to sort out how Sonic handles because he moves stupidly fast. For some reason they make these tight levels where Sonic moves about too much at the slightest flick of the analogue stick. This usually results in him ending up against a wall. Possibly the most annoying thing that can ever happen in a game.
For some reason I am drawn towards the idea of burnout-style handling for sonic and large sweeping levels which branch out like in motorstorm. Enemies might have to be removed, or a slow down time feature implemented to stop the horrible fighting moments which feel really unnatural and unintuitive at the moment. It's all got to flow; that's why Sonic used to be so good.
And agreed, get rid of people. That was a terrible idea from the beginning. Probably due to my original point that Sonic is a BLUE HEDGEHOG! Perhaps the world could be open in the sense that each stage flows seamlessly into the next. Maybe branching out?
Just some ideas from a guy who really wants to find a job where he can boss people who make games about..... without having to make them.

You forgot to add
'Make Sonic Team give a rats ass about the quality of game they are producing'
or
'A bullet to the head'

Those are what my vote would go to...

replacing the 3 with a 2. that'll probably do it.
Use your imaginations people. I know it's hard, but think of playing a 3D sonic game that wouldn't suck ass. What would be different?
Insult aside, In my eyes sonic is a 2D game. The attempts at moving it into 3D haven't really been a great success. And even if they did make a good 3D sonic game my opinion on Sonic being better as a 2D game would still stand.

I can use my imagination very well and the only way I can see a Sonic game working in 3D is if it goes back to 2D but they use the 3D in the background.

example being: Sonic's running across a straight path, while this is happening the background changes in a way so the user is given the impression that they've just turned a corner of some sort. All the while its still the same 2D sonic running along the same 2D path only the background gives the impression of 3D.

All of the above except get rid of open world and add "replace all of sonic team" to the list.

You list everything we want in the selections (maybe or maybe not open world), and I think the original Sonic Adventure describes the best possible 3D Sonic game, though in need of major improvements. I'd like a linear 3D game in the sense of the levels feature a path that is split, but you really only would run on a straight line. It gives the impression of 3D and keep the general feel of the original 2D games.

Or really, just make another 2D sonic game. The DS games keep up pretty well, I suppose. I'd like to see a 360 Arcade game with HD art, completely 2D, and just a flat out, honest-to-God 2D sonic game that doesn't look dated. What is most important is to forget Sonic '06 ever happened. Nothing that came out of that game was good at all. Plus, put it all back on Mobius. What ever happened to Mobius?

Erase all Sonic games that came after Sonic 3 from history and the minds of everybody , and keep it in 2D from that point on, forever.

In the poll I chose the "Eggman" to "Robotnik" option, because it's NOT FUCKING EGGMAN! Before Robotnik became what you see, he was Dr. Kintobor. Backwards = Robotnik! I don't know why they decided to cripple the games in this way for the American crowd. Did they think 3 syllables was too many for you or something?

To me, stuff like the main villian's name (Robotnik or Eggman), the voices and the characters can be ignored. What I would do is to get rid of the human characters.

They actually always called him "Eggman" in Japan.

so it sounds like we want Sonic the Hedgehog 4 released on the VC or XBLA, a 2d sequel to Sonic 3 and Knuckles.

Ok mate, thanks for the knowledge, appreciated. BUT I'm going to pretend I didn't read it and stubbornly insist on Robotnik being more correct :)

It just makes more sense to me. I mean, take the two names. Imagine you didn't know either. Now who would you be more afraid of by name, Dr. Robotnik or EGGMAN?!? Oh well, if the games don't improve dramatically or go back to 2D, it won't matter because the poor little blue guy will be forgotten by all.

Pretty much. But knowing how Sega has been treating Sonic recently, they might even screw up 2D Sonic.

I am aware of this, but who can respect a villan named "eggman"? Robotnik just seems somewhat threatening.
