I was discussing my (unpopular) opinion on a game with some friends when this topic popped up in my head.

Do you prefer to stand out or blend in?

Sometimes it is easier to just agree with the 'crowd', especially with difficult issues (blend in). But maybe you rather take a stand and express your opinion no matter the consequences (stand out).

Another example might be when you are at a party and just hanging in the background (blend in) or are standing at the center of attention because of something you are doing (stand out).

What will it be?

I usually try to blend in (go with the flow), unless its something that really matters to me.

"It depends."

For more or less everyone, sometimes they'd want to blend in, others to stand out.

I'm always very forward about my opinions, since I enjoy debating and I follow the maxim that nothing is above criticism, so I'd lean towards "Stand Out". That said, it helps that I don't mind people disagreeing with me so it's rare it ends up spiralling into an actual argument.

In real life? Blend in every time, I'm very non-confrontational.

On line? Still blend in mostly, but I'm slightly more capable to stand up for myself/my ideas.

I defend my opinions with a passion. This has earned me 6 warnings. The obvious choice is stand out here.

It depends on what my objective is at the moment. If I make a point to stand out, I stand out. If I don't, I blend in. Simple as that.

I try to stand out in certain ways but usually when i think someone thinks its full of shit or i convince myself there's no point in facades i crumble into the introverted mess that i don't enjoy but deep down probably suits me best and thus its back to trying to blend in and disperse into blandness.

very blend in, hell there are some days where i won't say more than a few words, which will be at the fast food drive thru.

however i do get in heated debates over passionate things or if i think someone is being treated unfairly, otherwise i usually prefer to just sit and observe everything rather than having my mouth running 24/7.

Pretty much blend in most of the time especially in a party or in a crowd, granted there are a few times I may voice out an unpopular opinion.

I prefer to blend in, mainly because I do a shit job at communicating my opinions in person, face-to-face. I do a much better job online because I have time to think about what I want to say and don't feel pressured by the eyes of those looking at you.

I still usually just blend in online though, mainly because forums with a lot of posters (such as the Escapist) usually have plenty of people already voice my opinion by the time I get there, and they do a better job to boot. :/

It depends.
There are certain things that you don't want to have stand out.
Some obvious, some not so much. Kind of have to gauge the crowd and local culture.
I don't particularly care either way.

I'm pretty shy, and hate being in the spotlight. So blend in, definitely.

The very first response pretty much nailed it. Sometimes I want to blend in with the crowd, and other times I want all eyes on me, it all depends on the situation.

Stand out for life:p

Not in an attention seeking way though... I'm just heavily opinionated. But at the same time I'm pretty shy around people I'm not close with so a bit of both I guess.

Depends entirely on the situation. In social situations such as large parties or whatever, where I'm around large numbers of people I don't know, I tend to become something of a wallflower.

Once I get comfortable though, I tend to end up subconsciously making myself the center of the attention.

In general, I'd like to stand out. I am an individual and wish to portray myself as such.

In certain situations, I'll wear an appropriate "hat" in order to preserve the tranquility and order of the current vicinity. Also, to get into places that I wouldn't normally be able to get into...

Regardless, I would not compromise my ideals, thoughts, and self at any time and I will be prepared to defend myself and let my thoughts be heard.

Generally I like to blend in, but if I'm in a good mood or it's raining outside I stand out cause I'm always singing to myself. ^_^

I like to dress normally. Blend in with the rest of society.
Mostly cause drawing attention to myself, in my line of work, is always a bad idea.

If you talk to me, I clearly stand out. Very odd, and generally hold views that most don't.
Anyone who really knows me has questioned my sanity at some point.
Sanity being completely subjective.

Well, I wouldn't say I usually make my self the centre of attention, but I am unlikely to lie or compromise to blend in, be it in what I wear or my opinions (a worrying amount of people I've met seem to disagree with me on things like gay marriage and capital punishment). That said, I have developed a slightly unfortunate reputation for doing ridiculous things when I get drunk, so I kinda stand out a bit. For example, I once got into a very loud and angry fight... with the ground (that isn't a euphemism, I genuinely tried to beat up the floor).
