As everyone else has said, I would watch 4-6 first, then 1-3. My brother tried to watch the movies from 1-6 with his girlfriend. They didn't get past the second film because she didn't like them. They watched 4-6 on a different day, and she said it would have been better if they watched 4-6 first.

I'd say 4-6 first, but everyone already knows about Darth Vader and Luke's relationship, so that surprise is ruined. Maybe... Actually watch the original trilogy anyway. Just get the re-mastered disks, because the original special effects of the first films turn them from pretty dramatic into comedies. :p
I agree man, even the movie poster for episode 1 had little Anakin Skywalker with Darth Vader's shadow. If you didn't understand who Darth Vader was and why he's important to the plot then you would probably have hated the little kid on sight.

But once you see the whole father-son galactic empire stuff play out, the little kid actually becomes a meaningful character, and maybe you could actually enjoy episode 1.

I would say definitely watch 4 5 6 first. To understand who is important and why.
Then you watch 1 2 3 to see how they became who they are.
i gotta say i've never seen that picture before but that is freaking sweet, i wish i had that in poster form

Star Wars - Empire Strikes Back - Return of the Jedi.

What's this New Hope you're talking about? And another trilogy? Do you mean the Clone Wars cartoon?

Impressive! Exactly the kind of posting I was hoping for.

I'll go with the majority and take 4, 5, 6, 1, 2, 3 as the correct order. No need to repeat mistakes that were already made, right?

Thank you :)

Actually, A New Hope was the actual title of Episode 4, the first Star wars Movie. To be honest, that title really bugged me when I first saw the movie. I felt like I missed important parts of a story by starting with Episode 4. The intro text made it even worse, referring to a galaxy-wide war I never heard of.

Now that I'm thinking about it...
Did the storyline for episodes 1 to 3 exist when the first movie was made? And if not, why did they make the first movie episode 4?

4-6 first. Then 4-6 again. And to top it off, 4,5 and then 6.

I am not sure of why you elude to some other SW movies when everybody knows that 4,5 and 6 are the only ones in existence.

Don't mention it. I hope she enjoys the films :)

Well, the prequels DO suck. They're terrible movies. That's a perfectly reasonable reason to watch episodes 4-6 first. If she's still interested after that (and many aren't; Star Wars has a lot of nostalgia going for it that most new viewers simply don't get) then consider showing her the others.

That annoys me so much. It didn't make him look like a bad guy, it made him look like a badass.

Slightly off-topic here, but what's your avatar from? It looks awesome.
Black Rock Shooter. It was a picture, then a song, then an anime. Now it's a game for the PSP.

It is rather kickass isn't it? You won't believe the amount of editing I had to do to make the Escapist accept it.
Nice, I'm going to have to look that up at some point.

Hello Escapists,
I've recently learned that my girlfriend, although she often uses references to characters, quotes or events in those movies, never actually saw Star Wars.
I plan to correct that, and since I made that decision, I'm trying to figure out the correct order to watch them.

So, which order do you think is better for a first-time viewer who usually doesn't really care for action movies?
The chronological order - starting with Episode 1, and basically following the timeline
The "traditional" order - how most fans have seen it. First Episodes 4 to 6, and then 1 to 3, which provide, and in some cases bend, warp and break background information.

Also, I want a sane vote, no "the prequels suck, just leave them" rubbish. Please think about your answer and, if you care, provide some explanation for your vote in a post.

Apparently, I screwed up the poll...
If possible, could a mod add it with the two options "traditional" and "chronological"?
Dude, how could you even think of watching Star Wars numerically?! You'd ruin episodes 4-6's plot points if you did that! Shame on you!

The only, and I do mean ONLY way to watch Star Wars for the first time is the way the creators meant it to be seen because it leaves the greatest impact. Learning that Vader is Luke's father does not have the same effect if you were bold-facedly told that 2 episodes ago.

As many others have said, 4-5-6-1-2-3 is the better option. However, there are some other, more "creative" options, you could consider:

1) 4-5-1-2-3-6. Starting with 4 and 5 gives you the proper start and brings in the Vader reveal as early as is reasonably possible. The prequels are then like a flashback, to explain whether or not the reveal is true. You then see how Luke copes with it afterwards.

2) 4-1-2-5-3-6. This is similar to the previous order, but you see a bit of the backstory first. Episode 3 then "completes" the information you have.

3) 1-4-2-5-3-6. This way, you see the stories of Luke and Anakin in parallel. It is basically the same as 2), but I would consider it a bit worse, as it's probably best to start with 4.

4) 3-2-5-6-1-4. The Pulp Fiction order.

There are other options, such as 4-1-5-2-3-6, 1-2-4-5-3-6, and so on. Really, as long as you start with 4, end with 6 and keep the trilogies in chronological order, you'll be fine. It's worth giving one of these a go if you haven't shown her too many yet.

This is actually a great idea. I especially like the flashback variation.
Thank you!

No. Do not watch the fucking prequels. It will degrade from the entire experience as a whole. If you didn't watch them as a kid on the theater, than you shouldn't watch them at all. So please for the sake of humanity, do yourself a fucking favor and don't watch those god-awful piece of shit excuses for films.

show her 4-6, then 1-3
this way, she gets the plot twists and Darth Vader turning good is much more powerful.
