A lot of people are asking what cyberpunk actually is and where it came from, from what I've read over the years many believe this was the first Cyberpunk story http://www.amazon.ca/Neuromancer-William-Gibson/dp/0441569595/ref=pd_cp_b_3
And by a Canadian no less, WOO HOO

I guess I'll go with cyberpunk. Steampunk is nice and all, but I just like the feel of cyberpunk more.

Plus with cyberpunk comes cybernetics. And I love me some cybernetics.

Steampunk at its finest.
Magnificent :D

I bought a massive compilation of shorts off Amazon just for this one; also I hear there's supposed to be more? OR more being made? Or something.

One can only hope!
I believe more are being made, but they've been in production for years now...

This movie is awesome. I hope the sequels on the website are real and not just an elaborate hoax.
Any who, my personal "Punk" of choice is Biopunk. But for the confines of this thread I'll choose Steampunk. Cyberpunk is a cool read but Steampunk is just a cool idea and something you can make in your home if your patient enough.
Out of curiosity, have you ever seen...

This?

I prefer cyberpunk, simply because I prefer the contrast that it presents over that of steampunk. With steampunk, you have much more advanced technology embedded within a much older society, but because it's steam power, and things are...well, steam powered, it still feels a bit too...fitting, I guess.

With cyberpunk, there's this feeling that even with such advanced technology, society has actually *degenerated*. If done properly, it's pretty damn jarring.

Oliver,

First, yes I have seen "Gentleman's Duel" before but it never gets old. Pixar needs to make a full length movie out of it.

Second if you like giant mechs fighting you should read Leviathan by Scott Westerfield (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leviathan_(Westerfeld_novel)). Its an alternate history WWI novel with the Central Powers fighting with steam/diesel powered mechs and the Allied powers fight with biologically created super-weapons (the Leviathan in the title).

Steampunk! ^_^ Much cooler clothes :x
Hmm, Trench Coats, Body Armor, & Shades vs. Victorian Era. I still vote cyberpunk, at least you can move around in them easier, though women with those giant dresses must hate running around at all.

Cyberpunk actually lives up to it's punk half and is a more established (sub)genre regardless whilst you can liste 'Steampunk' works on a single hand.

On a more personal note, I prefer the high-tech, low-life, cybered up future more than I do a super-extrapolated version of the industrial revolution.

Plus, I dunno. Steampunk usually seems to just be an art style more than anything. All like "I slapped some cogs and shit on something. It's STEAMPUNK!"

...I suppose that might be the way that Steampunk expresses it's punk side - just style that is entirely useless, like kill-counter tattoos and mohawks in Cyberpunk.

Is cyber punk just scifi. What are some recent games that are cyber punk so that I know what you're talking about before I vote.
It's a very specific sub-genre of sci-fi dealing with the near future, where cybernetic (and other forms of augmentation) have been taking off like crazy and oppressive regimes (be they governmental or corporate) are in control.

It is the dark future, a high-tech but low-life existence. Where folks go out at night strapped and with a pair of retractable claws hidden in their cyberlimb. Where armor-grade bulletproof clothing is the norm.

It's a genre that calls for a rise against, for a fight, and asks philosophical questions like what makes us really human. How much of your body can you tear away and replace with cold, hard steel before crossing that line? Is there even a line to be crossed? Etc.

Some games set in this genre are the entire Deus Ex series, Syndicate, Global Agenda, aaaand a bunch more I'm probably totally forgetting.

I love steampunk, possibly because I've always liked the mechanic archetype, and steampunk is lousy with them. Also, I tend to like the fashion more, as diva as that sounds.

Bioshock isn't very steampunk, there really isn't anything that defines what is Steampunk TBH.

Why isn't Bioshock steampunk? Based off of the 1940s-50s, not Victorian. Most stuff is run via electricity and has nothing to do with Steam technology...

Actually there is NO Steam technology at all in Bioshock.

How can you possibly called it STEAM-punk? You guys have no idea what Steampunk is. Just because characters where old clothes (not Victorian) and some of the stuff looks like copper?

Cyberpunk. Its actually somewhat plausible technology; Steampunk, on the other hand, seems like a lazy attempt to inject technology into fantasy settings, instead of using something creative, like flying turtles or psychic weapons.
