Steampunk.
While I am indifferent to both, I prefer the shinier sci-fi to cyberpunk.

I have to go with cyberpunk. 1) They have many more novels that are well written and 2) They are closer to biopunk! (Biopunk = Cyberpunk with gene mods instead of computer mods)

Now where have I seen this before? [ "http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.56576#421989]
It showed up when I searched your title, but its old so I guess nobody cares but me.

Anyway I can't decide, I'd normaly pick Cyberpunk but I'm reading a Steampunk book right now and it is good beyond words.

Damn that's a really tough choice. I really love the Steampunk art style but some of my favorite games have been cyberpunk. Steampunk by a very tiny margin.

I defy you to find an example of cyberpunk cooler than "The Gentlemen's Duel" in the Why is steampunk popular? thread. It is not possible.

Why compare the two genres to each other? I enjoy both fantasy and science fiction, just as I enjoy realistic fiction played out in our own world, and fiction with supernatural elements.

I can compare two cyberpunk works, or two steampunk works, I can even compare one steampunk work with a cyberpunk work, but they're completely different genres, and in themselves not superior or inferior to anything.

Steampunk

I do NOT like Cyberpunk... it's all hackers and megacorps...

not nearly enough Gentlemanly Adventure and spiffy greatcoats.

Cyberpunk easy. IMO steampunk is overdone, also Dystopia is so easily my favorite game I have to choose it.

Anyway I prefer Steampunk. I mean cmon.

How freaking cool is that.
Plus the use of brass and wood reminds me of WH40K.
Quite possibly one of the coolest things I have ever seen.
it is cool..... But what is it???

While I like the gritty feel of Shadowrun and that style of Cyberpunk I'm much more partial to Steampunk. My reasoning is that Cyberpunk, while usually containing a lot grit and desolation, which can provide for some very interesting plots, is not much to look at. Its often wasteland, ruined cities and more wasteland. Steampunk settings tend to be rich environments literally whirring with life. It tends, as ThaBenMan put it, to be bright, adventurous and tends to have more directions to go. That alone wins it for me, directions. I'm not talking about choice, I'm talking about how a story can unfold in each universe, in Steampunk sky tends to me the limit if you can explain it where in Cyberpunk it tends all to be about survival, desolation and what the fuck happened to everyone after nuclear deluge.

Aha, but remember, Cyberpunk gave you the internet ;)

Also, cue up the moody Vangellis:
"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like, tears in rain? Time to die."

Because that stirring speech came from a cyberpunk movie, cyberpunk wins.

The thought of imbedding any sort of computer part of any kind in any way, shape, or form is disgusting.

Steampunk FTW
