You need to wear an Edwardian suit with a dyed green carnation, a cravat and a monocle. /thread.

Get a nice, classy three-piece suit, but don't go for just all black. Maybe get a nice pinstripe or something.

Gotta be a tux. You're going to a dance, not a business meeting. Also, the vest included with most tuxes is tres sweet.

Also consider that this is one of the few chances you'll have in your life to wear one, future weddings aside...and even then it's not for sure. So if for no other reason, give it a go for the experience. You'll have plenty of time to wear suits later.

My Prom is coming up and half my friends are wearing casual suits and half are wearing expensive tux's so what is the escapists view on this? What did you wear to your prom?
If it's for prom, wear a tux, if its to make you look professional, wear a suit.

Lol this was so weird, I read the title and was like "Did I make this thread and not remember?" because I'm trying to decide the same thing. I think I've decided on a suit though. I like ties more than bowties :p.

There's a difference?
My thoughts exactly.

My only suggestion is to wear a top hat. You always look cool in a top hat.

And if the ladies steal it, let them have it. 90% of women look absolutely amazing in a top hat.

Suit for life. I never liked bowties and the fact that you could look like a penguin if you choose a bad one.

Give me pinstripe and a trilby any day.

Suits look sharper. Less cumberbund action getting in the way. No brainer. However, if someone can work a Gold Tux, possibly with Gold Top Hat, then that'd be snazzy [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moist_von_Lipwig].

My class got to have our prom in DoDDS [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heidelberg_Castle]-run American schools having quite big budgets.

The majority of us went suits.

In a castle.

That sounds like a kick ass night. Obviously it just turned into you having to find out who the killer was however. It was the Butler!

go for the tux, honestly looks way better

sure a suit CAN look nice but a well tailored tux beats a well tailored suit any day.

tho personally if you can afford it wear a kilt and ALL the gear with it, the women will love it

If it's not a black tux, it is not a tux. It it a suit pretending to be a tux.
Not true.
I for one, wore a kick ass full white tux.

I was never into the whole tux thing.

A three piece suit seems much nicer to me. Top it off with a pocket watch for uber classy win.

If you're looking to buy, go with a suit. If you're just renting, may as well splurge on a tux. Do NOT buy a tux for a prom. It will not only be a waste of money, but a waste of closet space.

If you can pull off a four-button suit, it really won't be a contest. That + vest + tie + fancy hat (optional, but kick-ass) = A WINNER IS YOU!
