I'm indifferent, but if you own a nice suit you might as well just wear rather than a rented tuxedo. The whichever you were, the clothes really don't make the event anymore special.

Don't go.

In all honesty, go for a Tux. You'd be amazed at how awesome you look in one.

Personally, I think tuxes are much sexier on a guy.
I don't know that it really matters for your prom, though - in all honesty, I can't remember if my date wore a suit or a tux.

If you look as smooth as I do in a suit, you don't need a tux. Tuxes Tuxs Tuxi Tuxen look kind of silly anyway.

Tux. It's for formal occasions, like prom. If you're going to prom, and you aren't wearing a tux, you should be shunned.

Also, you don't have to *be* James Bond to pull it off, it will help you pull of *being* James Bond.

I wore a nice white t-shirt, a nice pair of black dress pants, white tennis shoes, my lion's head necklace, and a black overshirt.

Simple, casual, inexpensive. Plus my date was decked out in a black and pink baby tee and a lacey black skirt with pink sneakers. She kinda made me feel underdressed.

I'm not too sure if there is a difference between them. But I guess I wore a nice suit on my prom and my friends.

I think Tux's are the cheap ones you rent for a 100$ a night?

go for the tux, honestly looks way better

sure a suit CAN look nice but a well tailored tux beats a well tailored suit any day.

tho personally if you can afford it wear a kilt and ALL the gear with it, the women will love it
agreed.

on topic: HAIL TO THE PENGUIN SUIT!!

Here is a pic of me in black tie. It wasn't perfect(the tailor didn't finish the shirt until the night before the wedding so I didn't have time to have it pressed), but the details are a decent example of a classic dinner jacket. Mine is midnight blue and it has a waistcoat instead of a cummerbund.

Also, for more info on black tie than you ever wanted to know, check out www.blacktieguide.com

As for what you should wear? Well personally, I'm a fan of the classics, and traditional black tie(from around the 30s and 40s) has aged very well. For some stuff that hasn't aged so well, see the vintage and hall of shame sections of the above website. It really comes down to two things. First, is this just one last high school event that you want to get through, or is this something you want to look back upon fondly when you're older. If it's the latter, then the second question is whether you want to laugh at the ridiculous "thing" that you were wearing or do you want your prom pics to look just as good 10 years from now as they did when they were taken.

Remember, fashion changes. Style is constant.

If it's not a black tux, it is not a tux. It it a suit pretending to be a tux.
Just for the record, midnight blue is also good. An ivory(not white) jacket can be worn, but in this case, the pants remain black(see Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom).

For me, that question is stupid.
I'm a tux man, always have been, always will be...

My Prom is coming up and half my friends are wearing casual suits and half are wearing expensive tux's so what is the escapists view on this? What did you wear to your prom?
I wore a three piece suit that my mom got from a used clothing store. I was really cool. 100% wool, dark grey and fit me pretty well after she let the cuffs down a bit. It probably cost over $200 new, it was that well made, but we got it for less than $50 at that place.

Tux's tend to look kind of goofy on most people. Even the more "modern" designs tend to make you look like a penguin.

I never wore full tuxedoes for my school formals. My thing was to compliment nice suits with gaudy ties. My senior formal I wore this disgusting peppermint green thing. At least it was done in a precise double windsor knot. I'm not that unclassy.
