Okay, so I guess I'm an impolite freak, even though many people have told me that I'm the most polite kid they know. I guess they're all wrong because a "Supernanny" told me so. Obviously it's a scare tactic.

invalid, a few children cant deem itself to apply to us. they are children with naturally shout attention spans. the difference between the ones who played the game or football is that exercise calms people (espeshaly kids) lower blood pressure, endorfins, oxytosin, and more exercise mood drugs. basicly this variable does NOT APPLY!
[p]1. different kids[/p]
2. one group was given exercise meaning they were under different mood drugs
3. they are children
4. its there day off why the fuck would they even want to pick up someone's pens when thy just played something they just enjoyed and what to return to
5. they are young boys wtf would they be polite i know i would just say "piss off and pick them up your self"
6. only some of the ones who played football were polite it depends on personality, personal opinion, and should i do this or should i call the person who dropped it a stupid, unquadinated idiot?

do you get what im meaning here, right?

None violent Football game? Not the way I play....
But seriously, I may be a lot of things, but impolite is not...usually... one of them! i am definitely polite, and if I had been there, regardless of the game I played, I would of picked up those pens!

Sample size of ONLY 20!!! Did they correct for outliers even? What where the tolerances? Was it double blind? It seems none. I mean if the tester knew which was the violent-game player there is the huge chance that their body language will betray them as they expect them to act a certain way.

And knocking over a pot of pens... WTF kind of test is that? Most of the time that isn't even a case of altruism more as case of timing and dozens of social factors like if the person who knocked over the pens actually wanted help or whether it is more appropriate to ignore it.

And where is even the logical link between violence and politeness? Why would killing Nazis make you less willing to help a clumsy lady who knocks over pens.

I see more of a correlation between team based shooters and altruism, nothing like fighting together as a unit to reinforce the importance of helping others.

But bottom line, if these are kids playing adult rated games... well, what do you expect. I will be officially pissed off if this is somehow used as an excuse to ban the sale of even to adults certain violent video games.

I play violent video games. Does that mean I'm impolite? I always hold the door open for girls and put the seat down.

Her experiment makes no sense. To see if the games had any effect, you'd need to moniter the kid's behavior for months and maybe years at a time, while taking into account a huge number of variables regarding the kid's upbringing. Dropping a bunch of pens proves jack shit.

these TV shows are one of my pet peeves it seams i am constantly putting the poor people (who are ruining their lives by watching these shows that are making them foolish) back on track by having arguments with them and showing them that only real science can be used to make these sorts of decisions

Maybe the kids from the violent group had learnt through their gaming (or possibly been brought up) to clean up after themselves, and thought the interviewer should learn to do the same especially if he/she was gonna be so clumsy.

As science goes, this is pretty weak. I'm a bit disappointed in Supernanny, I like the way she usually gets lazy parents to sort their act out.

Its how the kids were raised, not what video-games they play. I was very polite when I was young, people even said so, and I was played Duke Nukem all the time.

... Really? That 'test' is deemed worthy enough to back up an opinion that violent games negatively affect kids, because they won't pick up a pen from the floor?

What?!

This kind of stuff always makes me laugh.

20 participants is a fair amount but the type of test on the half who played violent games and the half who played non-violent-esque video games is ridiculous. The person performing the test purposely knocked the pens to the floor. The boys who didn't pick them up must've though that the person was crazy or something.

I played violent video games since the dawn of the Nintendo and I've been polite because my parents taught me to be polite. This experiment is invalid.
Same with me, I don't see how this can be concidered a real exparement.

20 children is not a representative sample at all. Why does this rubbish get aired?
I didn't think of that, actually. Hmm.
True, though, MOST of the non-violent game control group didn't react either. So the sports game had a detrimental effect too? Ergh.

While true that the primary socialisation any kid recieves will determine manners and such, I agree with most that parents, brothers, sisters and friends have a much bigger impact than games. Many of us played Mortal Kombat, Max Payne and the like at more impressionable ages, and who wouldnt agree that they'd affect our reactions in such a situation?

She is wrong, but you know how many people will do "studies" on video games. It's all BS. Just forget about it. If it doesn't matter to you, then don't stress.

Yep, I've pretty much just stopped rising to any bait my family puts out now, especially as I repeatedly prove to tem that I'm not dumb in tests and whatnot.

I figure that my sister will never get anywhere in life, so changing her views won't matter, and now they seem to think I'm depressed, but they don't have a clue what I'm like at school.

Overall, you can tell that they make assumptions based purely on ignoarance, and don't seem to realize how wrong they truly are.

I envy the next generation, growing up with these things, they will understand, and the world will be right. It will be like every other entertainment launch in history - cinema, tv, comics, you name it.
Ah man I feel for you.
Must be difficult when your parents prefer to listen to the media than their own off spring.

My recommendation is to just smile and nod. If they ever question why you don't debate ask what the point is when its one sided, your ignored, and they'd rather believe the media than experience games for themselves to make their own informed judgement.
Oh yeah, if they ever use the "you're just staring at the monitor/TV playing games and looking like a zombie" ask them if they have any idea what they look like staring at the TV, and atleast your interacting with your chosen form of entertainment.

It might not work, but it's worth a go.

EDIT: I made a mess of quoting you there, but i think I've tidied it up properly now

Right. Because no other factor besides violent video games could possibly influence a child's predisposition to help pick up some pens.

It's as if Supernanny just took a shit on the entire field of developmental psychology.
