I swear like a sailor. Then again, I WAS a sailor, so that makes sense. Still, I never understood why people get offended at swear words. Why does the word offend someone, when the word has no power, but what the person hearing it puts into it? The word is worthless unless it has meaning behind it.
Me saying the word "Flarnghast" in a rage wouldn't offend anyone, because it has no meaning behind it. However, if it were common knowledge that "Flarnghast" used in rage was a pseudonym for "Shit", then people might be offended. But why?
What's the difference between saying "Shit" or "Dang?" They both express anger, annoyance, displeasure, etc as a knee jerk response. The meaning and the thought behind the words are exactly the same. So why is one acceptable yet the other taboo?
What if I just went around using "Holy cow" as a substitute for swearing. That's not offensive, right? Well, unless you're in India where many consider the cow a divine creature, and suddenly, you're a blasphemer.
Swear words are only offensive if people ALLOW themselves to be offended by such words. And I think it's hypocritical of folk who complain about other people cursing yet allow words like "Dang," "Shucks," or "Phooey."
I do, however, take a pretty radical and hardlined view of the whole topic.
