Valve figured their characters work better as guys? And, well, old-school guys like me don't really want to shoot women in the face, so that might be a factor.

I've been working on female TF2 character mods for quite a while now, and have finished 3 classes so far. I actually started the project as an exploration of unique female character design within the restrictions of an existing game and see how players respond to them, as part of my Master's project. Matching the silhouette and likeness to prevent confusion, hitbox compatibility are important things to consider, and they are far from impossible to pull off (despite what you might read on the Steam forums, lol).

I spoke to Robin Walker one about the subject, and he said female characters were something they would have liked to ship with the game, but didn't make it in for performance reasons. Reasons that were tough, but not necessarily insurmountable.

I have no problem with female models provided they keep the silhouettes similar to the male models, otherwise it's going to affect gameplay too much.

On a side note that reference picture is all wrong. If the female classes were to be like those I would be completely against it.

As a female who plays TF2, I'll tell you I really don't mind at all that all of the characters are male. What matters to me is that they are good characters. They're well characterized, well written, and wildly entertaining. They are exactly who they try to be. Nothing more, nothing less.

Could Valve had made entertaining characters of the opposite sex? I have no doubt, it is Valve we're talking about after all. But the world of TF2 is a essentially simplified satire of the real world. Throwing a female into the battlefield would have to lead to one of three things:

-They handle the problems of possible love interests and relationships in a serious and politically correct way. This would really bog down the mood of the game and distract from the lighthearted parody of life it's supposed to be.

-They handle the problems in a satirical way, most likely doing this by juxtaposing hyper-masculine characters to feminine or even hyper-feminine ones and playing off of the friction they cause. This could easily become offensive and off-putting, especially when it comes to the domination taunts.

-They completely ignore the fact that some teammates and enemies are of the opposite sex. This one would probably work the best all things considered, but it still wouldn't be true to the nature of TF2 and the characters. The Spy doesn't hesitate to call the Demoman a "black scottish psychlops," so why would any of them hesitate to point out that one is a woman? The characters aren't stupid, and neither is the audience. To not address the issue in SOME way would only serve to insult the intelligence of both parties.

So keeping females in the lore and backstory (Miss Pauling and the Administrator) really simplified that issue. And I don't mind that at all. What Valve made is good. It's a fun game with fun characters. I couldn't ask for any more than that. Whether or not they did or could have put female characters in doesn't matter to me, and I think to "fix" that problem now would only serve to spoil the wonderful array of characters they've made.
I have to agree that this would be the best argument not to add females to TF2, particularly the point about tone. I have a feeling we're liable to see a gender-swapped version of the game eventually, simply because people have always been adding riffs to popular games and this poll shows the premise has legs. But I don't expect it to be an official release by Valve.

Having said that, if Valve decides to make a Team Fortress 3 in five or ten years, they may well decide to flush the whole works and invent a new cast, to lure us in with something familiar yet totally different. At that time they could make gender diversity a priority for their new creative direction. Then the women on the cast would not lead to awkward dilemmas, because the assumption of female characters would be baked in from the get-go.

i have only had TF2 for a brief period 2 months at the most and im a Free to player. but i thought that having Female's would have been a really good idea to have in a game and would have personally been on my list of things to Add to TF2.

if they did add Girls then there are more characters instead of the same people running around with a Top hat and stuff. they wouldn't even need to change any hats. even if you type Girl's in TF2 lots of photos and drawing of it pop up.

So alot of people are after it, but i want the Escapist's opinion here. Do we need girls in TF2?

please Explain your answer
I'd be okay with that as long as they don't look like that.

It really wouldn't help the game, nor hurt it either. So I'm going to answer this with the same response I gave in the "Half-Life aim down sights" thread: meh.

I can't imagine playing TF2 with girls, but then again, it would've been cool to have at least a couple of female classes, like the Medic and the Spy. As for all other classes, I can't imagine them as females, at least not the Heavy, it just wouldn't be as hilarious.

I don't think that it really matters, but it would be nice to have female character models. Just for the sake of being able to choose.

That makes sense. For a multiplayer game the developers would pay special attention to maintaining good performance for as wide a range of hardware as possible. But I've read that we're beginning to see a plateau in effective 3d rendering, so that the performance hit of loading two times as many character assets would become more consistent over players' hardware.

Totally. Lets distract Valve from ever releasing Half Life 3 by making them do shitty, menial work because a bunch of twats want to look at digital titties on their characters.

Not. Gonna. Happen.

I already finished the Spy, though I've reworked parts of the model and redid the textures like I recently did with the Medic model. After I'm done rigging and faceposing it, I just need to fit the attachment position of some 80,000 hats and it'll be better than ever.

Also not a guy, though :C

In the time period which I believe is somewhere between the 40s -60s women didn't have front line roles in the military. The TF2 team are Mercenaries hired by RED & BLU. Mercenaries normally get there experience from there military time. It makes sense to not have any females on the team.

Well if you did the VA for the spy one I refer to (wears a burka, french accent) then that question is answered already.
