I will never understand Tekken. It's always come across to me as a fighting game for people who don't really like fighting games.
That's an interesting perspective. Can you explain it further or is it just sort of a "feeling" thing? (Not bashing or looking to flame you, I'm just curious)
I can try but I'll probably just ramble. Here goes...
I pretty well grew up in the arcades during their heyday and basically sharked out the local street fighter competition. I'd take my allowance down there, bet it, double it, go home nearly every week. This probably made me pretentious.
It's just that Tekken is so bereft of needed skill to be any good at it. I don't begrudge it that because so many enjoy it and I can even see where it COULD be a deep fighting game, it's just that it doesn't HAVE to be. I've seen newcomers wreck pros in this game and I think that bothers me a little having grown up in the arcades. You could also say it's it's greatest strength in that people of all skill levels can succeed at it.
TLDR: Button mashing etc etc etc.
Ah, yeah, I think I see where you're coming from as I come from the same era. Against experienced players, mashing won't really get you anywhere in Tekken. If someone says they're a pro and they get beat by a masher any more than a lucky single round here or there, they're not really a pro. But, at low to medium level play, Tekken does definitely support mashing more than SF ever did.
Mashing and scrubby play in SF really did never get you anywhere at all against even mid level players, plus mashing in Sf would never allow you to look cool (unless, that is, you think looking like a spaz by throwing out random normal punches and kicks was cool). Even if mashing doesn't get you far in Tekken against decent competition, it does allow an easier entry point specifically with certain characters that are designed to be more mash friendly. And, perhaps more importantly when appealing to the mashing crowd, mashing in Tekken can output cool looking moves and sort of almost make you look like you really do know what you're doing.
