In my opinion it should be 18. Kids at younger ages should be more focused on moving forward in their lives and maintaining their friendships. They don't need to be fucking their classmates.
This. Very this.

And no, the age shouldn't be different for homosexual acts. There's no real difference.
I'm pretty sure you're talking LEGALLY, but you're forgetting one important thing: there's no possible way to get pregnant.
Usually the age of consent for homosexuals is older than hetero, not younger if that is what you are saying. And even so, equality is nicer with its more literal.

The age of the older party /2 +7 is the minimum age for the younger party. (Applies 14+) Not just for schtupping but dating in general, outside of this bubble is creepy.

Isn't it the age at which you can choose to have sex with people older than it? Because as far as I know if two sixteens have sex it's fine by the law.

I think its more to do with punishing people who have sex with underage boys or girls rather than stopping teenagers putting out.
Yeah, that's it.
The problem is to prevent people older than say 18 from having sex with younger people. So I say it's fine this way, it has to coincide with the age of majority.
Edit: I live in Italy BTW.

I lost my virginity when I was 14 to a 15 year old girl. Then for the next few years dated girls my own age (and slept with) until I was about 18. Ever since then I've dated girls that are usually 18 or 19, a few 17, a few 20+. What it comes down to is the person, maturity isn't always in the number but by the person themselves. I think that the age of consent should be 18 to stop creepers from coming to high schools and looking for some... extracurricular activities. Age of consent here is 16, by the way.

Really it's not so much the age that is the problem it's the amount of knowledge one has. I mean the school systems didn't mention sex until I was in High School. So seems like its hard for someone who's 13/14 to make an informed decision. But 18 seems a bit high just because a lot of kids at my school were having sex around 16/17.

14 is the age req in Canada? Didn't know they had sex up there... I thought they reproduced asexually? The more you know!

When it comes to age of consent law, legally is the only way that matters.

This isn't just about teenagers shagging other teenagers, guys. If you make the age of consent, say, 13, that means a 30 year old could legally have sex with a 13-year-old. And that is just not on. No way, no how.

Yes, people are going to do what they're going to do and if a young couple want to get it on, whatever. Personally, I think it's in their best interests to wait, as I think sex has become drastically devalued in recent years, but that's just my opinion. But let's not open the door to creepiness, shall we?

16's good for me. I know people who waited for years after and I know people who did it years before.
Yeah, 16 seems like an okay for us Brits. XD

As an educator, I think that adults having sex with minors is an act of taking advantage of a developing mind and body that has has not yet reached their potential of maturity. It is downright wrong and low.

With that aside, I think age of consent laws go too far.

It is common for many people to have sex before the age of 18. It baffles me how when they reach a magical number, it can become illegal to continue relationships with someone whom they were already seeing because that person has not yet reached the magical number.

I find it a complete farce that a person can be charged with a felony and wear a mark that exempts them from living a certain distance from a school or applying for certain jobs for the rest of their life for engaging in sexual activity for someone who agreed to it.

The age of consent laws are there for a good reason, but maturity and comprehension doesn't magically come at an age.

The fact that once the age of consent is reached, persons can engage in relationships with individuals old enough to be their grandparents even ridicules this further.

Personally I think there should be a different age ranges that determines what people you can be in relationships with, and IQ tests should play a factor as well.

I like the way the Canadians do it. I think it's something along the lines of 14 but under 18's must be within 4 years of each other, i.e. a 14 year old could have sex with an 18 year old but not a 19 year old.

Incidentally, lowest AOC in Europe? Vatican city. 12.

EDIT: Just read the rest of the thread and it seems Canada doesn't do things quite like I thought but I still think what I thought they did would work ok.

Let's open that door to creepiness. I learned the hard way N.A.M.B.L.A. really exists, you can all share my horror.

Watch the movie "Kids". It will show with horrifying detail why we need an age of consent. Seriously, the movie borders on kiddie porn. At 15 my girlfriend and I made a decision together to lose our virginity, together. Most kids it's not like that. Both boys and girls can be predatory and you need a way to stop that sort of behavior.

On the other hand we are abusing the laws we have in order to promote puritanical ideas. Children should not be put on a sex offender list for being children.

Amazing, all of humanity is essentially f'ed and another thread here shows it. Again.

I know a lot of kids who paid absolutely no attention to the fact that they were only 13..The 16+ age limit has about as much effect on them getting their groove on as the 18+ label does on 9 year old playing GTA.

If both people involved are old enough to understand what they are about to do, as well as knowing about and using protection, I see no reason that it shouldn't be lowered to about 13.

This topic came up a while back - There is no simple answer to that question. The mind of a person varies from person to person but what it is set at in each country is decidedly best for the majority of people.

Well it's not like there's going to be a lot of sex there anyways.
I'm pretty sure it's to protect the priests from suits filed by altar boys. It is their city after all.

16 is fine as a rule of thumb really, but it's one of those things were each case is unique, and individual discretion should be the name of the game.

I think it really makes little to no difference because if people want to have consensual sex the law is not going to dissuade them at all, regardless of what the age is.

I personally think 16 is a good one though. I think people are mature enough to get on with it and face the consequences then.
