I don't care how much the franchise sold out or became redundant or whatever; the underlying concept and idea of the games stayed whole. They were by far the most worthwhile games on the Gameboy and GBA and I still think it tops the current gen hendheld media.

It's a confusing issue, as on the one hand they are brilliant games and so I would love to see more of them being made, but on the other, they are rapidly running out of ideas for decent pokemon designs.
A decent idea a friend of mine had would be a 'definitive' version in which you start off in Red with the original starter pokemon, and then end up doing the entire back log of games from start to finish. Would be epic
I'd also like to see a pokemon game where it is actually possible to catch them all. Tired of having to do trades, and event only pokemon really piss me off because it only ever happens in Japan. I just want to pick up a pokemon game, play from start to finish by myself and have caught them all with no outside help needed.

Yes, unless they mixed it up and did something a bit different in the way of story and setup.
I'm tired of kid wakes up, does errand, gets Pokémon, rival of some sort has opposite one, 8 gyms, solve trouble on the way, Elite Four, now catch everything else.
I want some kind of innovation...Perhaps running an online Gym, or having to choose between helping the bad guys or defeating them, roaming legendaries that actually affect stuff, something a little more gritty and a little more interactive.
Plus, I'd like to have more than 6 available Pokés. 8 would be nice. Or perhaps, an item that allows you to have 2 "backup" Pokémon on the side.
Not to mention I want a streamlined experience when it comes to the staples of the game. Why do I have to repeatedly press on rock formations, then click YES, then watch a crappy animation, THEN actually use Rock Climb? Just let me click on it and go up if I have a Poké that knows Rock Climb.

Why do people think Generation 2 was somehow more original than the ones that came after? If anything, Gen2 was the least innovative of the lot. It added breeding and shiny Pokemon. That's it. For comparison, Generation 3 added natures, abilities, double battles and contests. I don't care what your favorite is, but saying they got unoriginal after Gold/Silver is just wrong.
