I think that as long as their simple as hell I.E. Same picture but with something moving slightly then its fine, but when its a constant explosion of different colors it can get a little annoying.

I do think there should be a rule about how easy it is on the eyes before you can use it. Creating tons of hours of tedious man work, probably. Stopping people from complaining about them, yes.

Am I the only one who finds it funny that there are tons of My Little Pony lovers in this thread, that either says something about their love for Gifs or that there are only My Little Pony gifs.

Obviously my opinion matters more, because I have a GIF avatar, which is the internet equivalent of Son of Sparda tier awesomesauce.
Well, you referenced Devil May Cry so I'm willing to go with anything you say. :D

Some of them are really cool, I've seen some great ones of The Doctor. But some of them are headache inducing flashing coloured things which are very distracting and generally annoying. If there done right there awasome done wrong and they suck. Like most things in life come to think of it.

User avatars are a form of personal expression, as long as someone's avatar doesn't violate the TOS, I'm generally content. There are some GIFs I've seen which have irritated me (the overtly flashy/colourful ones), but they seem to be in the minority and they certainly don't stop me from appreciating the subtle GIFs. :3

If the OP wants to judge people based on their avatar rather than the content of their posts, so be it - everyone's different. Some judge based on username, some judge based on typing style.. to each their own.

Are they seriously that distracting? Unless you suffer from some severe ADHD, i don't see how that's an issue. If you do have such problems, how do you cope in the real world, away from the PC?

I can't imagine your unending torment. Are there charities relating to this I can donate to?

I just realized how that sounded. XD I didn't mean for it to come out like that! Haha.

Dayum, apparently I should proof-read my posts more. :B

I don't really care either way. Static or animated, they don't distract me in the least, unless they are in really bad taste, but that doesn't have anything to do with being animated or not.

Judging people by their avatar is just unbelievably shallow, and frankly, quite silly. Hurts people's eyes, seriously? They should see a doctor about that.

Heh. I saw this coming. Someone makes a post about animated avatars and 90% of the people in it have one XD

I could care less, hell, sometimes I like checking them out to see what their doing. I've never used one but it's no more distracting than regular ones for me.

I love gif avatars and ever since I started using them I just can't go back to still images. Besides my avatar is for my amusement and I don't care at all what other people think about it.
Hey staika, I thought that you weren't going to post for a couple of weeks, what happened?

OT: Well, there are profile pictures I like and profile pictures I dislike, but GIFs aren't necessarily the ones I dislike, I'm indifferent to them.

Though GIFs has it easier for them to deliver funny moments, since they are, basically whole moments.

I'm not entirely sure how you could find a tiny box with a 3-second video so distracting that you can't read text.

School must have been a nightmare.

Still, I prefer my avatar. It's iconic of the brand (the legend) that is I, Woodsey.

Some people, like myself, make our own.

OT: Gif avatars are amusing to look at

As long as they're not the epileptic ones, I'm fine with them, even like them. But the flashing ones, I'd just ban the lot of them, worst is when they're the last poster and I can't hide their fucking avatar while trying to reply.

My current avatar isn't a GIF but I occasionally use them and I intend to add some animation to my current avatar when I have time, so in general I like GIF avatars. There's a few exceptions, very flashy ones for example, but the majority are good. To be honest OP if something that minor affects whether you read someone's post, I'm not sure I really care if you do read it or not.
