I'm a metalhead, and I think rap music is terrible, mostly. I can tolerate early 90's/late 80's stuff (Public Enemy, early Snoop Dogg, etc), but the only vaguely rap song I have on my iPod is the "Bring Tha Noize" remix by Public Enemy vs Anthrax.

The rap music my friends listen to is just garbage. They like Lil wayne and all those other dumbasses that can only rap about weed, bitches and money. I mostly listen to industrial and metal, but I do like rappers like Lupe Fiasco, Little Brother and most of the Wu-tang clan, they actually show talent and have real messages in their lyrics.

-lryics to an obscure rap song-
Please, don't loudly exclaim blind generalizations on subjects you know absolutely nothing about.
I hate to burst your bubble, but lyrics to an obscure ... piece don't exactly prove rap is anything other than masturbation.
Weird that you'd say that, because it, well, does.
Cannibal Ox are fairly obscure, but they've had a /huge/ influence on much of rap music. If you're going to blast an entire genre, you have to INCLUDE the entire genre, not just the popular thing. Are you ranting about popular rap music, or rap music? Because that's a whole ton of people that you're insulting.
Because if you're ranting about popular rap music, I can sign on with you. Otherwise, you're just... wrong. Nothing more to it.
EDIT: One more thing to add, now that I've thought of the best way to phrase it. Why would you say /obscure music/ doesn't represent the genre? There's more obscure music than there is popular music in ANY genre, so I'd say that it's a far better picture of the form than anything else.

I like some of it, but it's real hit or miss with me. I can't even say I like any particular artists completely. I enjoy Eminem, but he also writes some awful rap that is essentially meaningless to me. That could just be because most rap artists feel the need to write the obligatory, "I'm so fucking hot" rap which may or may not include themes of, "I got so many chicks I don't know what to do with them," "I got so much money I don't know what to do with it," and "Ain't nobody can rap as good as me. Word."

But there is some rap I do really enjoy. I like it when rappers make social commentary and use their writing skills to make poignant statements. Some rappers are better at it then others. Some rappers have only one song like that. That's usually the one song I'll have in my mix by that particular artist.

Mainstream rap for the most part is terrible, self-important, irrelevant garbage. However, if you look outside the mainstream, there is excellent rap to be found.

Rap peaked just after the 1992 LA riots and quickly went downhill. For years rap and hip hop had been largely focused on equality and had very few strong elements of violence. But when those cops were acquitted it was the final straw, it was a big middle finger to African Americans, and that's when all the anger came out. This anger was partially voiced through rap music in the aftermath.
Unfortunately the real meaning behind this anger seemed to be lost on most people, and that's when anger, in seemingly any form and for any reason, became a sales point of rap music. Many "artists" both old and new seized the opportunity to make a mint at the expense of lyrical relevance. They realized now that all they had to do was rap about kicking someone's head in and the consumer would lap it up. Those few voices who really had something to say were drowned out by the rest who had begun their volley of aggressive posturing.

And that's when it all went to shit. When the message was lost and rap became mindless.
It's all garbage now, just a bunch of businessmen talking about how much money they like to burn on useless shit, how much better they are than the next guy. They're all in it for the slap on the back, the blowjobs and the platinum diamond studded Chopard.

At least that's my personal view of how it is and how it was.

I just don't like the genre. It's nothing too big; It's just not my cup of tea. I won't bash it, but I won't like it either.

Meh, the closest thing to rap I enjoy is Aesop Rock. I thought his music was rap, but wikipedia says it's hip-hop. Shows how much I know about the genre.

I tend to agree with the views on "The Boondocks" about rap. If you haven't seen any yourself you really should look it up. Hilariously accurate views on the genre and culture in general(as well as general race relations), all done by a black guy, so it's not racist. The intro song is(probably) rap, and I do like that a lot. Too bad it's only a few lines long...

I can almost always find at least one song in any genre that I can enjoy and I have tried to enjoy rap. I've taken recommendations from friends and relatives. I just cannot for the life of me enjoy it. I find all rap to be rubbish sometimes hysterical rubbish, albeit theirs a few songs I can tolerate but if I listen to them once that's good enough. However everyone has different tastes so I don't judge.

Music is supposed to be an "Art" form. That requires talent and usually years of work. Even
the hard rock I like takes talent. The blues takes talent. Hitting a drum set takes talent.
When you see and hear the great ones...you will know it. In Rap, even the beat is often fake
and produced by electronics. Some of that stuff is still unique and can be given credit for
the thought put into it. Overall however, its a cheap replay.

It's all rubbish. Its just untalented crap that can be sung by anyone, as long as they have some beat boxes in the background and talk about hoes and all that kind of crap.
Oh, we have a challenger? Great stuff!

Here's the beat - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yVj7bzJOf3w

Your challenge is to have a track uploaded in a week. It doesn't have to have a set amount of views or anything, but I'd love to see you prove how easy it is to write decent rap. I mean, really, I would, I'm looking for something new to listen to at the moment, and if you can save me the time with your lyrical ingenuity then please, feel free.

Or is it not quite so easy? If you want, I'll even respond with my own track. Fuck it, I'm ready to put my money where my mouth is, what about you?
I would, but I like to keep anonymous, and playing your voice is not being anonymous.

If you can direct me to an audio changing software that is free, I could possibly reply to your challenge. Or I could just write up lyrics.

But fine, I will admit that not all rap is pure bile, but I find that most of it is, nowadays.

I also forgot to mention Kanye West who has some awe inspiring lyrics, but not in many of his feature singles - see "Flashing Lights" or "Everything I am"
Yeh until he made heartbreak and 808s after his long time girlfriend dumped him. I'm still too scared to buy that album for fear of dissapointment.
