Ditto.

And the ship.

But the Shalebridge Cradle was the scariest thing in gaming history, therefore I can't vote in this list.
That place was freaky as Hell.

I didn't vote for any of these games because the only one I've actually played is Dead Space. I would say the scariest game I've ever played is Metroid Fusion. You know if I say a GBA game is the scariest game I've ever played then I'm serious. You spend the entire game alone on a space station overrun by monsters. Your only contact is a heartless computer and you run around in the slowly deteriorating ship with the eeriest music I've ever heard trying to avoid the imminent death of running into the unstoppable SA-X. Sometimes you can hear the SA-X's footsteps...then you start to wonder "Oh God! Where is it?!"

Close second, the island section of Resident Evil 4. The Regenerators scared the crap out of me.
Also, you fail at courage.
Hey dude, I kept going in those games despite being afraid. That's courage. Don't be a douche. I was answering the thread question.
Sure, but really? Resident Evil 4? Really? That's about as scary as house of the dead.
I thought it was frightening when I ran out of ammo in all my guns fighting a monster that would constantly regenerate its limbs and, much to my despair, can actually move faster without its legs.
It builds suspense when you can hear their raspy breathing somewhere down the hallway. You ready your shotgun only to discover that you're seriously depleted from fighting the previous regenerator. Besides those dogs with tentacles coming out of their faces, they're the only things that scared me in that game.
I get your point, dude. I don't scare easily (not being cocky here, I just don't, and wish I did) but I can tell you're just a person that enjoys the atmosphere in a game. I LOVED Metroid Fusion, and will agree with you that it can get a little creepy. Same for the RE:4 Regenerators.

Now, I can't think of any games that scare me nowadays, but back in the old days (when I was like 10) the Redeads from Zelda: Ocarina of Time used to scare the shit out of me. I actually couldn't finish the game for a while. I've grown up now to realize they they're just hump-zombies, but still, that's the best answer I can give for this thread.

EDIT: Now I'm in the mood to go play Metroid Fusion... ::grabs DS::

Alright, glad we could reach a consesus on this. I was twelve the first time I played Metroid Fusion. Now I'm 18 and incredibly jaded. Metroid Fusion holds a special place in my heart though.

Thirded. Haven't voted, as there's no option to vote for Deadly Shadows due to the Shalebridge Cradle. Playing that in complete darkness, with of no light besides the monitor glow and the lights on the underside of the mouse, was quite the disturbing experience.

I wouldn't class Doom 3 as being scary. It may have made me jump at some points due to some unexpected events, but had nothing to really scare as such.

Silent Hill 2, but that wasn't an option, so I picked Condemned. I had so much trouble getting through Condemned; I usually played it while I was home alone, and I swear to God, some parts of it damn near made me pee my pants.

Sanitarium isn't scary in my old age, but it freaked me out as a child and has made me permanently nervous when a heartbeat is used to monitor a character's life.

Bioshock is the scariest game that I've played so far.
Bioshock? Are you serious? I hear a lot of people saying Bioshock was scary, but come on, it wasnt even a little (ok maybe the start before you have the wrench).
Everyone has different tastes. Bioshock can be indeed scary. You can't go around saying "it wasn't even a little" when everyone has different amounts of fear they can handle. I found Bioshock scary at a few times, especially the beginning where I refused to go forward afraid from being defenseless. Now common, think ahead before posting, man!

PS: I could have easily said to you "it wasn't even a little scary" when you're talking about headcrab zombies in Half-Life. Different tastes.

Condemned scared the hell out of me more than once. So did Doom and the other games I mentioned. But it all depends on what gets under your skin. And what dosen't. So if you don't think my games are creepy. You make a list of the games you think are. I would like to see what games scared other people.

Penumbra isn't on the list. It is, hands down, the scariest game ever.
Hands down is an understatement, I give a vote for Penumbra, pick either one of the games, they are scary as hell (though I think Penumbra Episode 2 is scarier).

And also I cast a vote for Clock Tower on the SNES, and Clock Tower 2 for the PS1.

You forgot Eternal Darkness, that game messed with you big time. What's scarier than a game formatting your memory card?!

Alien Vs Predator 2 when you played as a marine.

Any Resi with the lights off, alone.

I gotta say the suffering was probably the scariest, i don't think i slept for a week and i refuse to go anywhere near a penitentary (spelling?)

Bioshock was second, with the splicers *shiver* the spider splicers and the doctors in the hospital wing. i think the only reason tis soo scary is because when you first meet the doctors in the hospital, your arsenal is so small. afterwards the enemies are just passerbys.

but i have top give credit to Dead Space. It wasn't as scary because it still tried to throw action in way too much, but the atmosphere was there and i will never walk past a body sitting still with out making sure it's dead.

Rule 1 of horror games - Waste the extra bullet
Rule 2 of horror games - load your gun before you enter the next room
Rule 3 of horror games - Waste the Frickin Bullet

FEAR, Fatal Frame, Silent Hill, and sadly Lord of the Rings for the Xbox. It was the part where you had to escape the shire with frodo and i was afraid to go because thought one of those corrupted knights/kings things would chase after me and kill me. I was 11 at the time of playing and was pretty much scared of everything back then.

Rule 1 of horror game design - Take away the extra bullet.
Rule 2 of horror game design - That gun you're holding. It just jammed.
Rule 3 of horror game design - You're not getting that extra bullet.

Several things - why isn't F.E.A.R up there? and why isn't the first Resident Evil (remake) up there? I shit myself when I first ran past a corpse to see it slowly get up and start running after me :$ ps - Whats with all the hate on Doom 3, yes it was dark, boo hoo, it was still a brilliantly scripted game.
