That sounds pretty crappy to me. Based on the facts you added at the bottom it seems you had the right to tell the owner off and have him read his own school's motto.

if it s against the dress code then they can, the only things schools aren't allowed to disallow are those relating to a specific ethnic group (e.g. turbans) and, as far as I know, those with moustaches aren't an ethnic group.

is it, however, right morally? No, but what can you do?

Yes, seriously people need to shave more often. Besides, it's a PRIVATE school where they can pretty much control anything, and if one teacher feels your beard is a distraction to some people (such as your friend who 'worshiped' it), then they can tell you to shave it. I honestly bet the OP isn't telling us everything here.

Moral of the story: shave and you won't have this problem.

I remember they tried to pull this on one of my friends a few years back. He shaved, but it grew back to it's former length so quickly, and he was so stubborn, they gave up after a week. And that glorious hair is why he's called Chewie.

Unless there's a conduct code saying no beards, something which I would scoff at and be derisive towards to the point of never setting foot, then I'd say feel free to grow one. But, from the sounds, you're in a private school, so...I'm not sure, man. But, hey, if nothing else, make your case that your beard is your individualism.

There was nothing in the school rules against it

Thats the only part that matters, sure maybe they'll change the school rules just to screw you over, but until then...

Also, I don't like that a school can control how you present yourself beyond a basic uniform.

No, I would fight that. Unless if it is stated in the rules somewhere that you cannot have facial hair they cannot touch you. If anything it is discrimination.

Just say it's a religious thing.
Most religions have strict anti-shaving regulations (see: Orthodox Judaism, Islam). Your knee-jerk bile is invalid.
Which is exactly the point? Say it's a religious thing and that you can't shave, sorry.

Eh, it's a private school. They get to do stoopid things like that...

The teacher(s) don't really have the right to make you do that, I think...

I have a beard as well, and some people at school hate it, but they can't force me.

convert to islam. it's easy. just state out loud and with meaning that there is only one god and that mohamed is his messenger. there, you have it.
now you can keep your beard based on rules in scripture.

you could also be boring and go all hillbilly-biblebasher on them and quote leviticus 19:27. should also work^^

Schools seem to have a vendetta against facial hair. I swear I've never seen a teacher with a beard. I mean, you'd think there'd be teachers with beards, but there aren't.

I'm pretty sure there's some kind of secret rule that only university level educators can have beards.

The owner was just probably jealous of it. Unless it's a woman owner, then... no she might still be jealous about it.

Totally unfair, you don't make a guy shave off his beard, might as well ask him to neuter himself.

As a PRIVATE school, they can tell you to do all sorts of crap.

Maybe it's against your school's religious believes or something.

'A beard is the Devil's playground'?
Yet another strike against private enterprise. Schools should be all publicly funded and democratically controlled and run by the students.

OP, nobody has the right to tell another person what to do with their facial hair.

I would never shave because some dickweed tells me to.
If fact, I'd stop trimming my beard completely and grow a full-on viking beard, with braids and everything.
It'd be a beard filled with spite.
A spite beard, if you will.
