It's fucking annoying that I paid good money for it and I'm not getting any form of compensation...
Free hat and continued game support perhaps?
You and I have very different understandings of the word, compensation... ;)
Why do would you get any compensation? You bought the game, you got the game. You got what you bought and that others later got it does not in any way change what you chose to buy. Do you whine when a store lowers the price on something you bought too? If I bought a chair and the guy who made it later in life decided to give them away instead, do I deserve some kind of compensation for paying for it? No!

The only excuse for being somewhat bitter about this is if you bought the game in the last two weeks or so. And even then, if you bought it, you are guaranteed the full version of the game, as opposed to the comparatively less extensive f2p incarnation.

Otherwise, however? The game has been generous in free updates, added content and community events for well over three years now.

Speaking as someone who bought the game, I'm absolutely delighted Valve decided for this business model. And I hope more publishers follow suit.

If I had to pay $30 to enjoy the game for as long as I did, so be it. I've met many cool people and had a lot of fun over the years thanks to Team Fortress 2; it going free to play isn't going to change that.

I voted Yes.
There are several reasons for this:

1) I got it as an extra with the Orange Box anyway when I bought it for the HL games, so it was more of a fun extra than an actual expenditure.

2) There will be a lot of new noobs around soon to show who's boss.

3) I like, Counter Strike, but there are other games worth spending my money on more right now. If Valve released TF2 as F2P, then the chances are all in the ups for CS coming out as F2P as well.

4) They put a lot of effort into making the game better to advertise the F2P, including options like Auto-re-load, spawn with last used item, etc. (sweet!). Edit: (really a reason 6) the Medic video is out (double sweet!). :D

5) Purely, ideological reason: books used to be for only the rich in society (Medevil times), when you had to have a lot of money to be able to pay for not only the books, but also to learn how to read. These days these commodities have become more and more accessible worldwide and are almost imperitive in the West.
I'd like to see the same happen to videogames. It probably won't happen in my lifetime, but lately with Indie games becoming more widespread and gaining recognision and with the huge influx of F2P, gaming is becoming far more accessible to people without money or with very little to spare. (James Portnow did an experiment a while back on gaming on a zero dollar budget, which you can check up on in Extra Credits.)
I was ecstatic when Valve released their first five F2P games, because promotion on such a wildly spread system as Steam is a giant step in that direction. Personally I've been having a ton of fun the last week playing Champions Online and I'm not getting the feeling I'm missing out on anything, despite having not payed a dime for the microtransactions.
So yeah, I have no problem with F2P, because I feel it's good for the gaming community in the long run and it gives Indie developers more of a chance to showcase their creativity.

And personally, if every game became F2P right after I bought it, I'd see those as pennies well-spent and never have a grudge about it, simply because I'd know that now more people would get to enjoy the experience I'd have. (Compare argument 1 to what I just said.)

(Yay, 4th post. [And what a long one it became]).

I paid £30 for the Orange Box in 2007, and started playing TF2 (one-fifth of the pack, so £6)in 2008. If, at the time, they'd said 'You can pay £6 and play now, or pay nothing and play in three years', I'd have paid the £6. Best £6 I ever spent. I'm not sure how anyone who bought the game more than four months ago could possibly think they have something to complain about.

That said, I haven't played it since this update. So it might be on a downward slope. My favourite servers will probably be harder to get into than they already were (I imagine I will never ever be able to connect to the PC Gamer server again), which won't be fun. I'm aware of about five vanilla servers in the UK, which is never ever going to be enough. If I can't get into those then... well, instant respawn is not very fun to play.

I am alright with it, though more compensation should have been handed out, not because Valve owes us anything, but because of the fact that with the sudden increase in players, the forums, the wiki, steam cloud, trading, and crafting have all stopped working for the time being, I personally cannot play for more then 15 minutes until Tf2 just shuts down. Once Valve gets everything up and running, I will have no problem with the update.

Now, every server is crammed with hundreds of people who, in all likelihood, have no interest whatsoever in the game.
If they have no interest why would they play it? I never cared for the game and found it boring, and still not playing it. Same with a lot of free games. Plus, they've sold the game for damn near free anyway, think most everyone already has it...

When other games have become free to play, they offered some sort of compensation to the people who actually paid the $20 for it.
Name one, that lasted for 5 years in pay to play model.

The biggest problem with F2P is that the community sinks into the realm of trolls and teabaggers. I know it is like this with most games, but I loved TF2 for it's decent community, but no I'm not sure how long that will last.

I'm actually not so sure the TF2 community has been any more decent than any other such.

Yes, generally speaking, I've had a very pleasant experience playing the game.
However, I suppose I might just be more sensitive to the stuff, but if I had a penny for every gay slur I've seen tossed around by players in that game...

That could be true. To be honest though, team fortress 2 is a more aquired taste than most other games out there. Some new players will stay, others will be all like "meh" and go back to playing whatever they were playing before.

I used to despise the number of added weapons, but looking at it neutrally from the F2P perspective, I can somewhat understand. Thankfully, there are few weapons that are considered better in professional play, even if many are confusing to new players.

Ultimately, I'm just interested to see what happens with the new influx of players, if any. I wonder if all the interested people involved are playing already.

Finally, if anyone is going to try the game for the first time now, try requesting a coach to improve yourself.

These self-entitled twits are even going so far as to ***** about Valve giving them free stuff!
They didn't though did they and that's the point, everybody bought this game with their hard earned cash and after a short while they've dumped the charge.
People have a right to be pissed, I don't play TF2 any more and even I'm slightly annoyed at the fact it is now F2P.

The problem with F2P is that anyone can get it now which yes it is the point of a multi player game to have many people playing, however call it elitism if you like but the paying crowd does keep some annoying factors out.
I don't play F2P MMOs any more because the community in Pay to Play is much more bearable.
Bolded the points I wanted to address specifically.

1: Beside the hat they've given to every premium player, they've provided GIGABYTES of new content over the past few years. GIGABYTES. Did they charge a dime for any of it? No. So, um...yeah, they have given the players free stuff.

2: A short while? The game came out in 2007. I hardly consider that a "short while".

3: Yes, people have a "right" to be pissed, but that doesn't mean their ire is justified. I also have the "right" to call these whiners out on their bullshit.

4: If you don't play anymore, then what basis do you have to whine about this update? Let alone why do you even care? You don't play so this doesn't affect you.

That last paragraph I could attack on a lot of levels, but I don't want to spend the time. All I need to say is, I eagerly await the increase in player count. Quite frankly, I'd rather have to "deal" with full servers and the potential of playing with bad, inexperienced players than have to deal with self-entitled whiners who've owned the game since day 1 and haven't stopped bitching about the changes since day 2.

Something else to consider before I end this rebuttal. TF2 has been suffering from decreasing player counts for a while now. With it going Free-to-Play, a lot more players will start playing it. This, in turn, will lead to not only continued support, but more timely updates and new content from Valve. Like it or not, F2P is a good thing for the game. Besides, if people would bother to read the FAQ (which most don't) they'd see that Valve is well aware of the potential of griefers and hackers using this new F2P structure to circumvent bans and the like. They've taken steps to prevent or, in the very least, react to these exploits.

I always wanted to play tf2 but its one of those games on that ever increasing need to play list. Well going free has just pushed it to the top.

So valve resurrecting a dying community with an influx of new players is a bad thing? Oh, ok. Also whats the problems with the hats anywhere? Their cosmetic. If you don't want em' you can easily ignore em'
