If the difference between high school and university is anything lie it is here, he's in for a surprise. I have to work much more now.

Yes, teachers often exaggerate. I see my brother having trouble studying for tests because he gets pages and pages of homework. But still, as you progress in the school system, things only get harder, and if you can't handle your homework, you probably can't handle having to study after classes when you're in university.

Besides, homework does help learning. My experience with Maths and Physics homework is as follows:

1st/2nd exercises: "I don't this formula, let me check my notes."
3rd exercise: "I'm pretty sure I'm right, but let me check."
4th exercise: "I now know this by heart. No need to check it anymore."

Of course there should be homework. Teachers don't actually get kids to learn, all they do is introduce and review material. It is by repetition and application of said material that a student learns. If a student does not in some way integrate/use the material that is given to him, he will not remember it. (unless he has perfect memory, which is extremely rare)

What do I think? All the time they're wasting whining about getting homework, could be better spent getting their homework done. Clearly they've got time to spare if they've got time to whine about it.

No. Sit down and fucking educate yourself with the resources provided.

It's better in the long run. Black Ops will always be there, your opportunities won't.
Exactly.

I'm currently doing my A-levels, and I'm getting about 3 hours of homework every night. Although that does include extra reading around my subjects, which is something I enjoy, I can stipulate with confidence that the vast majority of people regard reading as work.

I can tell you with great authority that all that reading does wonders in history. Seriously, if you're doing history, do the fucking reading.

This person needs MORE homework, a long with every single person who signed that thing. Do your homework right after school or at lunch and you never have to worry about sleep problems. It doesn't encourage obesity at all, that's even more absurd then the other point. What encourages them is the easily accessible fast food restaurants on every single street. That and a lack of willpower.

Honestly, I think homework is more beneficial then tests are, especially now it my field (CIS). Test, well... test your memory of stuff, while in the real world, if you don't know something you can always look it up.

Ridiculous, why do they think home work got instated? Just to bully kids? You have to have home work or longer school, one or the other, me myself, think there should be more home work, the future of this world hangs on education, just look at the learning curve and compare it to the rate a growth in human life quality. Every time technology and such advances there will be more to learn, and if you don't learn about what happen, how the hell are we supposed to advance? Laboratory accidents? Making ''Brain slaves'' who are forced to learn while other slacks off? And Homework = Obesity is the dumbest thing I've heard, i will not be as self centered to say I've always been the smartest guy in the class, but i am close, i am not particularly overweight, and the fat on my body isn't because of homework, its because i am a lazy bastard who sit and play video games all day.
Plus, if you wait with education until college, how are you supposed to learn a thing when the difficulty curved jumped 10 grades above you're stupid arse.

Durr... Where would I start with this.. So much to correct and do a statement about!

Homework is ruining the lives of kids everywhere! It can mess up a child's health."
-Homework can be fun, admittedly all those never ending calculus where you repeat the same formula again and again is dulling, but these help you to learn to use the formula if you have not learned it during the lesson.
-Since when being smart has have had physical implications?

If you stay up and do homework, your staying up later, which means your sleeping less. When anyone below 18 doesn't sleep the required 8-12 hours, it can stun your growth. If you have a cold, it will last longer. Just because you don't get to sleep.
How about doing your homeworks after school right when you arrive to home, this way you should be done before you go to bed. And seeing the person doing this petition is roughly between ages of 13 and 15, latest research show that at this age child sleeping pattern goes off two hours from 10pm to 12pm and ideal amount of sleep is two REM-cycles That is usually 8hrs (For me it is 6hrs since my REM-cycle has always been shorter). Lag of sleep does stunt a your growth little, but most of physical growing is factored by, genes, diet, activity (In different quality and amounts), sleep. If you have cold sleeping is good since you fell physically tired, but your body can fight off the common cold by just being relaxed, only real danger if you are having cold is physical exercise.

When i do homework, i do it fast so i can sleep, but I don't learn anything. Even in math, I don't learn anything... Homework Messes Kids up and Should NOT be tolerated.
-Have you tried listening during class and learn the basics of the subject you are studying at the moment, when you know how to solve a basic puzzle, you'll realize that complicated puzzle is just a basic puzzle in bigger scale.

It also encourages obesity.Notice that America has the most obesity in children. Why do think that is? Fast food? Yes that helps, but if kids had more time to go outside, and more time to exersize, than the obesity rate would drop considerably. Most Kids that are obese are smart and do all there homework, therefore, by the time there done, they wouldn't be able to go outside or even go on a treadmill, it would be bedtime. By assigning homework, you are supporting obesity in children.
-I have never been active child, I have never had sport hobby (If you don't count being in a wind band where have have 3-4 marches a year). Still I am on ideal weight to my height and I have lost 6kilos, while studying, working and having hobbies in which all the common factor is sitting long periods of times. Want to know how I lost all that weight. Simple, I removed all sweets, sugar drinks from my diet and I mined what I ate (1 hot mean a day with 1/4th of carps, 1/4th of proteins, 1/2 greens + 2 glasses of milk).
-You trying to say that American students are both fat and smart, average student is fat granted, but smart? Sorry PISA exams are not agreeing with you. What I last heard from my friends in the "perfect country of yours" schools been canceling vacations and other extra activities to prepare their students for exams. Want to have shorter school days, better numbers and more activities in school? Here's how you do it, get you whole school to do their home works, improve their scores and follow during classes so schools don't have to force you so much homework and extra studies.
-So if you do homeworks, you get fat then you can't go to army and protect your country from terrorist, they win? That is like diamond of inductive thinking.

Has anyone ever told you? When your a kid, its the best 17 years of your life. You should cherish your freedom. What freedom? Freedom to do school work out of school? Yes, children should get good work habits, so instead of written work, maybe tell them to go outside and play kick ball and have a parent sign a slip. By having to get something signed, it would enforce commitment, which is something the USA lacks.
-I can tell you that my life between ages of 6 and 15 was the most horrible days I have ever had (Than Atheismo they are over!), why? I was mentally and physically bullied, in and out side of school. Yeah try cherishing that, so what did I do about it. I studied really hard and did my homeworks so after school I got to study somewhere FAR AWAY of the bullies. My average was 8.2 theirs were 5.2 (In Finnish scoring 4 is lowest 10 is highest).
-So to learn good work habits you must be taught to delegate your work to someone else? You realize that when your guardians sign a paper they are doing what you should be doing. When you go to work-life I can ensure you, there will be papers, there will be reading and there will be writing.
-Agreed USA is lagging commitment, children are not taking any responsibility of THEIR schoolwork and by that they are not taking responsibility of their future.

Save the homework for when your in college, not kids and teenagers. Let them Cherrish there childhood, because thats somthing they'll never get back.
-Well, my homework load went down when I got to college (Gymnasium in Finland), how I been spending my last 2 years studying: I have gone lot to movies/theater (Finnish course and Drama classes), I have done great deal of essays and studies about Philosophy and History, Which both were completed in under 8hrs (I am hard working guy), I been doing my math homework but still I keep getting low score? What I do? I compensate by doing better in the other classes (Humanistic science, Drama and Media).
-By definition you are teenager when you are between ages 13-19.
-I have had lot of fun in school, my whole life goes around school, It is fun to go there, be there and then after hard working day go to home and relax. Tho this might be because of Finnish work ethics and culture where working hard is respected. Compared to the American dream of "I want to do as little I can to achieve whatever I want", quite an opposite here. That might explain why Finland has had THE BEST PISA scores since the Finland took part in the system.

In short:
-You are lazy.
-Take responsibility of your life.
-Learn to do timetables and organize.
-Focus in school.
-Do your homework before you do stupid claims.
-You need to learn to work and how you learn, by working and then doing your homework.
- Go back to school and focus

...It prepares you for the harsh reality of life after school I'm afraid. It's not torture for the sake of torture.

Jobs and careers are just as daunting.

I, personally, think that we should get somewhat bigger assignments to do over the course of, say, two days. My science teacher sometimes does that for my class, and I don't mind that much. I'd rather have a bigger assignment that we have two days to work on assigned every other day, of course. Giving us a two-day assignment every day wouldn't work out too well. The only real exception would be homework assigned on Fridays, which would be due on the following Monday, like they already tend to be. Another good thing to keep kids from getting overworked is study halls. Sort of. Having a study hall as the first class of the day is kinda pointless, as most kids do it the night before, and the only kids that try to do it all in study hall are the dipshits (like this kid), and the kids who were absent and weren't able to do their homework from the previous day (Like what frequently happens to me). But, yeah, spread out the homework over a couple of days so I can spend more time on The Escapist the kids who are a bit slow let it sink in more.

Now, if you REALLY wanna ban something, you should ban mandatory wrestling in Phys. Ed., and try to set up the grouping so you won't have the all-honors student who can't stand being touched being paired up with the touchy-feely retarded kid.

Homework is good. And I'd say that Teachers should liberally enforce homework doing. Make sure they do their homework if they don't get it, advise them to do at least a bit of it if they're on top of everything, but let them try to carve their own path.

On the topic of actual projects, those are a must. More engaging as well as just more (perhaps not as large scale or difficult though,) projects would be very good for school, imo. It offers students an excellent way to figure out what interests them and how they work best independently, good for all age groups.

Has anyone else noticed that this petition was started in 2006?

That's really all I've gotta contribute to this thread.

This is kind of an unintentional follow up to my thread about the grading system.

So anywho, I was looking up websites to help me out with an essay I'm working on when I found this:

http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/theendofhomework/

All I've got to say is, REALLY?? I don't know about you guys but a lot of these "arguments" are pretty flawed. How is having a parent sign a slip while a kid goes out and kicks a ball going to improve their grades in school? The statement the author makes about how he does his homework fast so he can sleep doesn't help his case much either.

What do you guys think?
I sense a new rush limbaugh in town!

But check out the signatures. No establishment will take these seriously

If anything they should give students more homework to better prepare them for the real world.

Homework is what makes the school system effective. Without homework, you don't get the repetition needed to properly learn what you've been taught. No homework = no repetition = no learning = lower grades = more children left behind. It's up to the teachers to give the knowledge to the children, and it's up to the parents to give the work habits to the children, and homework is the only way to do both at once.

its simple, homework should be extra work for those who need it. It should not be mandatory to do.

maybe... it kind of sucks to go through 7 hours of school and then have like an hour or two's worth of homework.

there should definitely be a rule that allows kids to do their homework whenever they want DURING school. some classes dont allow you to do work from other classes, which is BS.

also, some kids i know have hours worth of homework every single day, for every single class. its awful

i was dumbfounded by the petition. not only is the horrible grammar a perfect example as to why kids need homework but the utter lack of knowledge as to why homework exists baffles me. homework is around to do many thing but two of the more prevalent issues are that it forces the student to think about a subject at a different time so that he/ she may try and recall what they learned in class and the second part is to teach kids how to find ways to discover the answers themselves with the tools given to them. students complain about homework when they have the ultimate tool right at home, the internet. when i was in high school my family didnt have internet so i had to either get the answer from the text or stay after school and ask the teacher for help. some of you may think im some old geyser talking about the good old days back when you had to walk home, in the snow, up hill, both ways but i graduated in 07 so i know the workload and its nothing in comparison to college. getting rid of homework would only widen the gap between college and high school which is wide enough as is.

yes, homework is hard and cuts into your free time at home but considering its preparing you for a 9-to-5 job i would say we get off easy. a hard day of school with a ton of homework might keep you busy until 9 with good study habits, one of the focal points of homework, but considering the fact that without this knowledge you are little more than an idiot i would say it is a fair trade-off.

i love how in the middle of the United State's biggest educational downturns their are still people who believe the key to success is the "lighten the load" for students by giving them less work, more play, and shaving more and more days off of the school year. there is a reason the US is pumping out lazy idiots by the thousands and the solution isnt to ease pressure on the system, we need to tighten things up more. we really need to cut summer vacation down and ban any policy similar to No Child Gets Left Behind

PS sorry for the rant but i hate lazy students that get their way and coast by on mom and dads dime without putting forth any effort and thinking its all a joke. its these type of people that put these kinds of motions into circulation and those same students that are all grown up that pass these ridiculous pieces of legislature
