I am an atheist, however, I am completely open to views providing there is evidence to back up claims, I need something a bit more than blind faith.

I still respect other peoples view though.

I think it's not right to bash religion as a whole. Neither is it right to bash science as a whole, a country as a whole, a race as a whole. There are parts however worth bashing.

Although I wouldn't bash Aryans as a whole, I'm glad to bash Aryans who think their race is supreme and superior over all others.
I wouldn't bash China, but I'm glad to bash Chinese Draconian policies.
I love science, but would still gladly bash Baltimore for supporting forged data.
I daren't bash religion, but would gladly bash religions that are intolerant or warlike towards people with a different belief system.

This means that I gladly bash Islam for supporting the idea of jihad which is not "just a spiritual crusade". I would gladly bash the Jewish faith for not allowing people of other races into it. And yes, I would gladly bash Christians for their intolerance towards gays and abortion. And worst of all I would gladly bash Christians who see themselves as Christian Soldiers. It's no different than Jihad, you're just on the other side of the fence.

There are many atheists who I've heard say "There could be a god. I don't know."
What I haven't heard yet is to have a monotheistic religious (jew/islam/christ) person say "There could be no god. I don't know."

As long as people keep their beliefs to themselves; I'm fine.

But as soon as people start making flawed decisions, influenced by their beliefs; they need to be smacked in the face.

" Atheism can be either the rejection of theism,[1] or the position that deities do not exist.[2] " -http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atheism

" There could be a god/gods " -http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.142031

this poll is flawed by incorrect options, since that last one (which i voted on, take that statistics) clearly makes whoever votes on it truthfully, not an atheist at all. Or am i wrong when i read it as though the poll were for atheists only ? as a confused believer, i thank you though for giving me an option to vote for in a atheist only poll, where i guess i shouldnt even have sticked my nose in the first place. oh well, better luck next time.

I'm an atheist who believes that it is weird to believe in god and supernatural things. However I do believe that if there are indeed gods and such it would probably be a mix of all religions or something that no one has thought of (if scientology is right I have decided to commit suicide instead of accepting it)

By now I have learned that many Escapists are atheists. This is coming from a Christian, but what 'kind' of atheist are you? Do you have friends with beliefs, or do you stand on a soap box and yell 'Religion is dumb'? Sorry if I didn't get the 'soap box' term right, I heard my dad say it once and I think I heard him wrong. I just want to know what type of people I may deal with in religious threads in the future.

Just btw I'm not really uptight. My best girl friend is an atheist. I was raised Catholic, I still am, but I don't agree with some ideas, probably more to come. I also sometimes (try to) think about the universe without a God, sometimes it doesn't fase me.
Jewish in blood, but I don't know many jews who believe in god around here. I respect everyone's beliefs, but I'll argue it if they choose to engage me. I also accept the posibility of a god, but not to the point where I believe he'd give a crap about any of us, I believe in selflessness less then I do in god.

You could say I'm the poll parts #1, #2 and #4. I'm quiet and usually don't say I'm an atheist unless someone asks, I understand why people might have differing sets of beliefs and might even believe for completely irrational reasons (faith being what it is)

And since I am an Agnostic Atheist I also acknowledge that I might be wrong (because we don't actually know for sure).

EDIT: Oh, yeah, I do have friends who have faith. One is a fundie Young-Earth-Creationist of all things, most are just Lutherans but there are also a few atheists, one of whom is actually a Buddhists and one who lacks belief in gods but thinks ghosts and spirits are real.

Ever heard of agnostic atheism? "We don't know for sure, but personally I lack belief"

Agnosticism and Atheism are two different things (although with a few similarities), please dont make it a PBJ of religion.

Only enough to point out that Agnosticism and Atheism are like the words 'square' and 'yellow'. They can be used seperately but can also go together without any problems, because inherently neither word tells you anything of the other word. (A)Gnosticism (root in (a-)gnosis) tells us information of what a person thinks regarding the knowledge of gods. (A)Theism tells us information of what a person thinks regarding belief/faith in gods.

I respect others' beliefs. If these beliefs make them happy then who am I to take that away from them. As long as they're not an asshole I have no problem with them.

I respect other people's beliefs, but will stand by my own when challenged. I don't like it and go into a screaming RAGE!!1! when some one is spouting things about some form of religion or other; if you'll excuse me for saying, I do think any and all religion is complete nonsense, but I rarely say it.

Wouldn't that cover every atheist since it is impossible to know that no deity exists (even if they could know that none of the ones we know of exist)?

I myself don't see any credible evidence in this world for God, nor any gods, to exist. Even if there were, I think I'd have to go with some of the ancient, extinct ones (Zeus, Odin, Ra). At least they were.. interesting; Odin wandering the landscape as an old man, or Zeus seducing young maidens disguised as a bird..

However, any Christians, Muslims, Jews, or anyone else who have belief in a higher power, and doesn't pretend to be better than everyone else because they "have their god on their side", but keeps a close-to-earth, level headed state on things, deserve my respect, and I won't ever quarrel about their beliefs with them.

You're allowed to believe whatever the heck you want, just don't try to push your religion down my throat, and I won't do try to push atheism down yours. Works wonderfully, as all my friends don't try to convince each other "that is real and that is superstition". Then again, most are either Christians, atheists or agnostic/skeptics.

Atheism - the belief that there isnt a god/gods. Agnosticism - the belief that we cant know if things such as gods exist. How can a person claim that there is no god, and at the same time claim that we cant know ? "Listen up everyone! There is no god ! But i dont know for sure, but if youre also confused right, there isnt one ! At least i think so ! " Please, if you see how this works together, i'd love an explanation, beyond the person having a weak grasp on their own reality.

I'm a quiet one, until people push their beliefs on me. I won't be running round shouting "there is no God" but the minute I get people harping on at me about sins, going to hell, heaven and being a terrible person for not believing in god, I totally screw.
