I voted "They are just all to similar to each other" but what I really wanted to say is "There are too many in the Counter-strike subgenre, and not enough (or, at most, exactly enough) in the Quake subgenre." I guess that's partly just my own preferences, though (I hate CS, and I assume I will hate CoD, although I've never played it :p, and I love TF2).
This.

Most shooters today are all about who sees the other player first. Back in the day, it was more about who could keep a bead on a target while jumping around like a lunatic who could run 50 miles per hour. I remember playing Shogo: Mobile Armor Division online. Imagine a game where, once you spot the other player, you spend a good two minutes jumping around and changing directions like a mad man, with neither player being able to land many hits until finally, through attrition, one player is brought down to 0 health. That game came out in 1998, and to this day there hasn't been an online experience quite like it. We need more games like this, and less Call of Duty's and Counterstrike's.

some FPS games feel so ridiculously easy compared to that stuff. Is it simply because we are trained to the "Go in there. shoot everything that isnt human/wears a different color uniform than you, and move on to the next building." mentality?
summary of mario: Go in here, jump on everything that isn't you, move on.

Try not being so condescending and nostalgic.
yes there are a lot of FPS games out there, with the success of titles like call of duty, and halo, why wouldn't there be? There is also almost every other genre of game imaginable, especially when you include the XBL/PSN marketplaces.

Lets think about the most popular games to come out recently: Red dead redemption, a free roaming 3rd person action game. Alan wake, a psycological thriller/ 3rd person shooter. Heavy rain a story based game fueled by quicktime events. Super mario galaxy 2, a 3rd person puzzle / action game. split second, skate 3, prince of persia etc.

see what i'm getting at?

small time game companies may be jumping on the fps bandwagon, but the only big fps titles are call of duty, halo, battlefield, and medal of honour.(i didn't include resistance or killzone since they haven't brought anything out recently)

Gears of war? (I know it technically isnt FPS, but it very well could be.) and lets add some other older titles: DOOM, Timesplitters, the 007 games, perfect dark had a little something going there. Haze, crysis, left for dead 1&2, Histoy channel games (which suck), quake series, Star wars has a few. all those tom clancy games( they have enough guns going off to qualify as the general shooty shooty bang bang brouhaha) F.E.A.R., Fallout 3, Half life, counter strike.... need I go on.

and while im talking to you: wee bit defensive are we? (next time feel free to just check "no" on the poll, mmkay?) Try not to be one of those guys (for your sake, seriously....) to whom the internet is just a means of character attack kay? lol)
1. I did tick "no"

2. I could make a list like that of most game genres

3. The OP is about first person shooters, i don't class third person shooters and third person shooters.

4. Forums are for discussing, not just for ticking boxes, i gave my opinion. If you don't like people disagreeing with you a forum isn't the best place to go.
Your last paragraph is very hypocritical.

5. I didn't say there weren't too many FPS games, i said that too many small companies are making them/ jumping on the bandwagon.

and while i'm talking to you, your whole post reeks of elitist douchebaggery, maybe you shouldn't speak like that mmkay?
Fine, just dont call me condescending when Im just putting out my opinion. See thats what you were talking about when you talked about giving your opinion and how I shouldnt be an "elitist douchebag", so while you were trying to show how you were the victim of "Douchbaggery", you were also trying to put somebody else down for there opinion at the same time. Thats called contradiction. Food for thought..... and please dont bother replying, I was hardly paying attention to this anyways...

Second Option and yet they still felt very different. See kids, thats what we grownups like to call originality. Your generation need to get with the program!
well really if your talking about the young generation, we arent the ones making the games, the ones who grew up playing doom and such are the ones now making games, so talk to them not us.

2010 game releases by genre...

First-person shooter: Roughly 15 FPS games will be released in 2010. Most are sequels, exclusives, or both.

Sports: At least 10 will be released in 2010.

Action-Adventure: Over 25 will be released in 2010.

Third-person shooter: At least 15 TPS games will be released in 2010. This can easily be combined with Action-Adventure games, seeing as they are often one in the same. Throw in RPG elements and you have another combination for a lot of these games. A good example would be Mass Effect 2.

Now, I think the reason people say there are too many First-person shooters is because it is so easy to tell when a game is in fact an FPS. You just look at the perspective shown and say, "That's definitely an FPS." Nobody says that for Third-person shooters, or RPG's for some reason. It's a bit unfair when you think about it.

Let's list the 2010 FPS games that are on at least PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3...
Bioshock 2, Aliens Vs. Predator, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Singularity, Brink, Medal of Honor, and Call of Duty: Black Ops are the multi-platform FPS titles that are pretty much guaranteed to be/have been released in 2010. That's a pretty small list, especially considering each of those games appeals to quite a specific audience.

Let's be fair, folks. If you don't like First-person shooters, that's fine. If you just think there are too many, nobody is forcing you to buy them. It's kind of like slapping FPS fans like myself in the face when you say there are too many FPS games. I think there are too many sports games per year, but I don't declare it to random people because I know that there are quite a few players out there that love those sports games and actually want more of them.

Just sayin'

Personally I think there is a lot of FPSs out there, and they are pretty much the same.

There are way too many of them FPS games.
From what i've seen, the newer they are the worse they are.
Though there are some exceptions, the majority of them follow this. =(

What I notice too is the influence of FPS creeping into my beloved RPGs. I have not played a Mass Effect or Fallout game, despite everyone telling me how awesome they are, because I cannot tell if they are RPGs or FPSes. It's a big reason why I tend to prefer JRPGs to WRPGs in general (though there are good WRPGs out there... Dragon Age FTW). Because in my eyes, WRPGs are becoming FPSes. Show me a WRPG, outside of Dragon Age, released in the last two years that didn't rely on shooting. I absolutely suck at shooting, so I just can't play FPS because I can never get anywhere, and I feel that RPG stats won't help at all. So I have not played those legendary games. Though if you can convince me that they're not all about the shooting in combat, maybe I will give them a try.

I reckon the instinctive urge when making a game these days is to go down the FPS road - it's a massively popular genre and your game is pretty much guaranteed to sell. Personally, I'm a fan of 3rd person games, as they allow you a wider view arc and nearly always have decent 'cover' mechanics.

Yes, but they sell well so it will be a while before they go away. Luckily, I like shooters so I guess I'm well off. One thing I'm noticing is all the bland shooters coming out. I've seen ads for under advertised shooters that look exactly the same with maybe one or two gimmicks to set them apart. That is the problem.

According to the statistics of the german rating board, only a very small minority of games are fps or violent games in general - it's just that the other media shows most interest in those titles.

well, first game I want to make when im older is a third person shooter but with a good story, even planning on making the game two discs long (disc one, single player, disc two, multiplayer) just so then the single player can be long (30+ hours) and then a multiplayer that is story based and somewhat mmo like.

may so like its too ambitious but I will keep trying until it works. :)
