ternal Sonata, this bugs me, I think I have 17/22 achievements and my score for that game is only 300-odd, to get the last ones I fear I have to play it through twice more....urrrrrrrrfgh (so I'm not doing either of these lol)
I believe you can do ES in a mere two playthroughs. And since it's actually rather short, clocking in at a mere 35 hours for me, including cutscenes and the extra dungeon, I see no reason you can't.
I think I may have missed something so that's kinda a whole new playthrough for 1 item, which kinda sucks
You couldn't have gotten it all in one playthrough, anyway. Some score pieces are second run exclusive.
Yah, I read up, if you don't get all of the score pieces and EZI stuff and pirate dealys available on playthrough 1 then they won't be there on playthrough 2

I'm honestly not sure what it is. Take the PS2 for example: when you finish a game, what? A file on a memory stick that will one day be lost, thrown out or magnetically wiped. With achievents though - it may be superficial, but you will always have have some, anything to remind yourself that 'I did that!'

I like achievements when done right. Some are fun challenges that the developers pose to the player for the sake of completing them (such as Orange Box's Little Rocket Man and Call of Duty 4's Mile High Club); some are indicative of the course you should take to complete the canonical path of a game (case in point: Bioshock 2's Savior). Those are the right kinds of achievements.

Things like the Assassin's Creed flags and templars, AC2's feathers, and pretty much anything that doesn't provide an incentive other than completion are the wrong kinds of achievements. Fuck those. You completionists can have fun with it, but I find it dull beyond all reason. And once a game feels like a chore, there's not much point in playing it is there?

I like to get the ones I can get. Out of all the games I own, I only have 2 fully complete 360 ones (CoD 2 and ME2). PS3 I have 5 complete (RE5, Bio 2, Resistance 2, CoD WoW, CoD MW2). I mainly get them just for bragging rights with my friends. "Ha ha, I got that one and you didn't." We like to race each other to see who gets what first.

That being said, I do feel that they can take away from the game. Sometimes I find myself not wanting to play an old game because it has no trophies. I quickly slap myself for being silly and play it anyway though, but just that I have that thought is a disappointment.

Spending hours on a game you've already finished doing a tedious task which reaps no benefits yet gives you a number....why?
I'd understand if after getting every achievement he gets a theme or an avatar outfit but nope...just a number.

Don't get me wrong some games do this well, Mass Effect had bonuses for each achievement you earned, Splosion Man and Halo Waypoint give you avatar items, Final Fantasy XIII on Ps3 gives you themes for doing different trophies, some arcade games give you gamer pics but I can't think of anymore.

Wouldn't it be nice if, instead of 1000g/100%, you got an avatar item or a theme, something no one can buy and is just an indication of how dedicated the person was or is everyone happy with just a number next to a game to say they've finished it?
You also get the achievement, verified, and on your XBL account for everyone to see.

But moreover, Achievements and Trophies are there for people who like to accomplish things; it gives them goals above and beyond simply "beat the game". Good achievements also encourage you to try new things or give you more accessible milestones towards mastering the game. While it would be nice to get something *else* for your (lowercase a) achievement, I don't see it as a necessity for all games across the board.

Also, quite frankly, I could care less about an extra theme or avatar whatever. (And as an aside requiring it for all games would be additional work by the devs, which could put undue strain on some of the smaller companies.)

It's the challenge.
The 'game within a game'.

When I played games back in the day, my friends and I would always try and give eachother little challenges. Like 'Who can go the longest in Mario Bros while small?' or other stuff like that. You didn't get anything, it was just cool. You did it to challenge yourself, and brag to your friends. Now they've introduced achievements which are (Or should be) little challenges from the Developer.

Some are crappy, sure, but most I've seen are pretty good, even if I wouldn't bother trying to get them. But some just sound fun! Like in Just Cause 2: One achievement is 'Kill 5 enemies by dragging them behind your vehicle'. I just had to try that! I got it, and it was fun! I didn't get anything digitally tangible, like avatar clothing, but I had fun trying and getting it! And that's what games are about: Fun.

I usually just play the game and if I get trophies, then that's great. I'll only try get them if I'm bored and have nothing else to play.

I like getting gold trophies though.
Gold trophies are niiiiice.

Assassin's Creed was actually the game that turned me off consciously trying to get trophies. Those mother-frakkin' flags man...they're everywhere...and all the towns look the same when you're not just Parkourin' it.

I enjoy the achievements that are not just "Collect X, Kill Y amount of Baddies" I enjoy the ones that challenge the player, make it fun or interesting, like using only one kind of weapon, or not killing anyone in a map sort of thing.

Yay.

This 76,000+ GS was hard work, damn it.

Now, as for 1000/1000. FUCK NO.

Japanese games are ridiculous with their completion requirements. I'm not playing Vesperia more than once, damn it. As good as it was...And Bayonetta on Infinite Climax? HELL NO.
I couldn't get past Bayonetta's first level on Hard. There's no fliping way I'm going to waste time on it that I can spend playing a new game.

It's to make a competition. If you did this really hard achievement, even if it didn't help the game at all, you now have bragging rights among your friends who are trying for the same achievement. In a way achievements are miny-games.

I like them because they give you a sense of completion and acomplishment, theres no better feeling than when your trying so hard to get a really annoying achievement and you eventually get it.

Ok well there are things that feel better than that but you get my point.

Achievements aren't a selling point for me, but if they're included; ok.
If they're included so you get them by playing (L4D or HL here); good, good.
If they're included so generally you get them by playing and they then give you a bonus or reward or something which actually is more than just a number (ME); yes please!

I agree. I mean I find some to be really fun to get. Plus a couple (such as in Borderlands) get you to play a way you wouldn't normally play (use each class as previously mentioned, use the action powers [I wouldn't have normally used them but thanks to the achievment I started and love using them] and using each of the kinds of weapons X number of times). Also I like how it'll show how much you like a game. For example the only game I have 100% on is MW2 since I really like the offline part of it. I'm close to doing the same for Bioshock 2 (just have to reach level something online).

What really ticks me off about Trophy/Achievements are those that force you to play online to get them.

I hate online achievements, mostly because I rarely play online, and most of them require you to spend a lot of time online.

They're nice in games that have no ultimate goal, like TF2, since they give you an overarching objective that goes beyond any single match. In games that have a set beginning and end, for me, it's largely dependent on the difficulty and if I can be bothered. Most of those designed solely for enhancing one's e-phallus, I stay away from. (Of course, most of my gaming is on Nintendo systems, so the point is largely moot. :p )
