I use them because I don't want to miss anything, turns out the voice doesn't always match the subtitle.

Yes, but they can talk too fast and with too much ambient noise for my liking. The developers need to put pauses between sentences that are longer than is natural. Also, not everyone has HD, so the text shouldn't be super-duper tiny-weeny.

I'm not a native english speaker. While I usually don't have trouble understanding the language, in it's written or spoken form, in games there are often a lot of things happening. Making out what someone is saying in a foreign language in a controlled enviroment is one thing. Making out what someone is saying in a foreign language while dodging missiles, listening to explosions, and hearing people scream is another.

I prefer not to lose out on the experience.

Yes, yes I do.

Anyone who has played GTAIV and has gotten to meeting Lil' Jacob will know why.

I personally feel disappointed whenever a dialog-heavy game doesn't have subtitles. Sometimes you don't want to, but you get distracted by the giant asteroid coming your way and don't exactly hear your party members say 'RUN TOWARDS THE BUNKER!' And so because you don't know of the existence of said bunker, your flop around like a helpless fish before you get ground to a paste.

I'm not challenged language wise. I just love my subtitles.

I like to have subtitles, one is that I usually play late at night and have the sound on low; another reason is to understand what the characters are saying for example, Little Jacob in GTA:IV, I had no idea what he was going on about until I put the subtitles on, even then I didn't totally understand what the heck he was going on about.

I leave them off if I can because I prefer the slightly more "cinematic" presentation. And I want to be able to give my full attention to the action.

I have no hearing impairments whatsoever, but have this odd need to have subtitles enabled in a game. Probably because I read a lot faster than characters speak? Dunno.

Oh, and 'cause the spoken versus written dialogue is almost always different, and I like seeing the difference.
^^ This.

I usually leave them on, for all the reasons mentioned, but for Mass Effect I turned them off for the more cinematic effect :p
Same here, though my main reason for disabling them was the sheer amount of dialogue. Usually, it doesn't disturb me being done with reading a line of dialog before the character is, but in Mass Effect, it kind of ruined my experience. Mostly because it relies so heavily on dialog and its dramatic presentation, and subtitles do kill that.
(But I did wish for a "Krogans only" option for subtitles)

only if the subs are needed ie japaneese, or other language games dont see the point other wise you can spend so much time reading and not see whats on screen

I use subtitles becouse the characters talking often have a really bad accent and/or soft voice, and this is coupled with in game music that I havn't found how to turn off yet in my rush to play, the other in game ambience, as well as the excess noise from inside and outside my house tends to lead to me not understanding a bloody thing they say.

...I like to think that dialog is important. Sometimes I'm right.

I always have subtitles on because more often then not I miss a few lines of dialogue and forget what I'm supposed to do (Happened to me a lot in Half-Life 2). And of course, sometimes the characters just make no fucking sense at all, Grand Theft Auto IV being a prime example (Little Jacob and Badman are impossible to understand without subtitles, and even with them you'll probably need a translator).

The only time I've had the subtitles ob was for GTA4 whenever Little Jacob was around.
