Tau is definitely my choice. If not them, then Orks. I'd like to have WH40k as a hobby. It's too bad they are robbing people with those prices. They're senseless. Years ago bought a starter kit -like package with a friend though. I love Dawn Of War though. As a contrast, DoW II is terrible.
I really feel like their prices are the sort of thing that can be reduced to entice more people to play it. I know I've had random sprees of buying 2 or 3 boxes, then stopping because I just burned through $100+
It's because the corporate heads of the company want to treat GW like Boots Pharmacy, not a luxury item manufacturer, and they don't seem to realsie that arbitary price rises lower sales.

We serve the Star Gods, with the Dragon as our prime. We are Necron. We are underpowered and massively due a new codex (rumoured for halfway through next year). Painted right we look bad ass. We are also not yet another army in Power Armour.

Necrons really aren't underpowered when done properly, just like any army. Some armies are just easier to run than others (but people still get it wrong).

I first started with Chaos, but after getting Gorkamorka free with a subscription to White Dwarf, I switched to Orks. :D

Let me rephrase - if you deviate from the 3 or 4 units that actually work in the Necron codex, or if you are fighting an opponent who is clever enough to just run straight into CC with your warriors and phase you out, then the Necrons are underpowered.

Play a sole warrior/lord/lith (potentially desty's too) army and only play those who don't understand how the current rules favour CC against the 'Crons, and you'll do well. Potentially very well (especially if they don't understand Phase Out and just shoot the 'Lith).

I recently had a great weekend at Warhammer World with my gaming group who hadn't seen my Necrons for a long time (I've been using my Marines for about a year while hoping for a 'Cron update) and I walked out almost unscathed with several victories under my belt. Why? Because they had not the first clue how to deal with such a rare army. They tried to shoot it out. The one close battle was when the Guard player just threw everything he had in to CC. He would've won too if a few terrain rolls went his way (or his army was less geared to dealing with the mechanised armies that dominate the scene).

Space Wolves. I love Norse mythology in just about any context and the idea of space vikings was just plain irresistible to me. Plus, they're fairly simple to put together, but easy to customise, and it's fun having squads where each figure is unique.

Tau are like space communists.

As for Nids, well I feel they're mostly just rush tactic based... if you can call that a tactic.

I find Necrons to be one of the hardest armies to fight. You think you've killed off a regiment then, next turn, BAM! They are back up again, oh and they have just teleported next to you, so has their monolith.... and a Nightbringer...fun
Also they kinda are in power armour they're like un-dead space marines with an awesome backstory.

O.T Eldar all the way! They are hard to balance but amazing when done properly. Also they have Viper Jetbikes.

Necrons, it's so much fun to rip a proud warrior molecule by molecule and keep getting back up like a zombie.

I've played Space Wolves, Tyranids and Orks Speed Freekz, but the latter were definetely my favorite.

I always enojoyed the hobby aspect (assembling and painting) of Warhammer as much, if not more, than actually playing the game. I especially liked converting models and no other 40K army offered more possibilities than Orks.

I only had 1500pts of Orks, but every model was converted and painted to the level of the showpiece models of most people I played with. Ork Bikes made into choppers, my Trukks were lowriders and so on.

Fair, I'm definetely not claiming they aren't due a new dex now DE are done.
Having a squad of 'crons monolith portal out of assault then shoot my dudes, while getting more of their squad back is one of the most frustrationg things to experience in 40K, crap dice notwithstanding.

Your poll eliminates 2 out of the 3 armies I play so I voted Tyranids. I play Dark Eldar, and Imperial Guard also. I have been playing 40k for going on 11 years now, and have had every army except for the Tau.

I remember beating Kharn the Betrayer in melee with three fire warriors, i had some good times with my tau and they were my first army. Now i'm collecting dark angels. Partly because i enjoy the fluff behind them and partly cos all the robes and arthurian motifs look sweet.

Imperial Guard personally, so I'm disappointed it's not in the poll... Before I stopped playing, I was debating converting them into a chaos-guard army. Still, I could usually win by setting up epic defensive perimeters with lots of vehicles and heavy weapons. Until my friend started playing Deathwing *shudders*

I'm a Space Marine man, myself.
My uni housemates are all into it, one collects 'Nids and Blood Angels, one has Ork and Necron armies, another is Tau, and another has Imperial Guard.

So I picked Space Marines. And do alright with them! 1000pt Space Marines vs Necrons, tabled my housemate by turn 2, losing only one man. Not bad at all.

However, blood angels are a ***** to fight if the enemy has Mephiston. He's unstoppable. :(

Imperial Guard. When you absolutely, positively, want to have your opponent cry about how many tanks you can field...accept no substitute.

FOR THE EMPEROR!!!

...okay, I also went back to Space Marines recently after playing IG for years. I've got about 4,000 points so far, and am basing them on the Executioners chapter from the Badab War. (IE obscure chapter that has limited data on it, so I can adapt it without too much canon already set.)
