I don't play the tabletop game anymore, although it was a lot of fun. The games are awesome!

I chose "what". I mean, I know what it is, I just never played anything of it.

I used to play 40K until I realised I had no idea of the concept of 'tactics'.

From that point on it bores the shite out of me.

"It" being the WH40K universe? The games so far ranged from decent to really good, but the universe itself.. At a glance, it seems way too overblown and crazy to be taken seriously, which is the reason I couldn't get into it.
If you actually read the history it kinda kicks ass.

Oh it is VERY overblown and crazy. And it does not take itself seriously. But it is a bit of an acquired taste. Subtle is not a word in the 40k vocabulary.

Everything is so over-the-top and silly that I laugh about it, I love it.

I love it, but not in a very serious fashion, but I mean, come on, NUNS WITH FLAMETHROWERS!?!?

You can't go wrong with that.
I loved Dawn of War 2, and plan on trying the older ones, and I do have Space Hulk, and I enjoyed it when I was younger. It scared the crap out of me. :p

I've never played the tabletop (although I do own a few painted miniatures), but I'm a very big fan of W40k. I mostly got into this universe via the novels of the Black Library, of which I have over 60 by now, and the collection is growing. Call them unimaginative all you want, but I love Space Marines and the like... my most recent purchase is a monster of a book called the Liber Chaotica, so as you can see I'm really into the whole background lore.
Oh yeah, and the DoW games (well, all except Soulstorm, of course) are among my favorites. I'm one of the folks who liked DoW2, and I'm really stoked for Chaos Rising! (Probably won't get to play it until April, though -.-)

I never played the tabletop because it was too expensive to make anything cool. As for the games, DoW1 is one of my favorite RTS games of all time, and DoW2 is a piece of shit that broke my heart.

The universe is absolutely over-the-top, gigantically overblown and bombastic, awfully tacky with way too much testosterone. And thus, I love it to bits.

Orcs with machineguns, nuns with flamethrowers, elves with laser swords, 10 foot guys with rocket-rifles. W40K doesn't take it to 11, it takes to 9001 and beyond.

As for the games, I enjoy DoW2 every now and then, even though the matchmaking sucks big time. Stop pitting me, an inexperienced level 3 player, against level 48 players. It makes me loose. A lot. I would also love to play the tabletop version, but sadly there isn't anyone around to introduce me.

Can't really judge - I've only played the first Dawn of War plus expansions, never played the tabletop.
I enjoyed Dawn of War, though, and what I've picked up about the universe seems pretty cool. In short, the franchise's existence is pleasing to me. I shall permit it to continue.

Well well well.

I will tell you all what: i like this setting's art style. No, actually scratch that, i fucking love this art style. So ridiculously pompous and over-the-top. It's like if someone looted random items from all over the world and piled them in a gigantic mountain of unrelated stuff, then set it on fire and threw a rock festival on top of it! Awesome! This setting even has miniguns that shoot rockets - there's only one other with those, to my knowledge.

But then comes the sobering realization. First strikes Darkness-Induced Audience Apathy. I cannot possibly care for any side involved, because all of them are equally, irredeemably atrocious, and everyone is going to die horribly anyway, so what's the freaking point? The god of hope is evil, i don't want to stick around in universe like that. Then the fanboys. Oh god, the fanboys, the obsessive kind of them. I cannot stand them. The brick-faced seriousness of the setting about itself is pretty annoying, but when fans start taking it serious too... THE HORROR!

And then i realise that the setting is not as awesome as it could be. For example, why are there no freeze rays in 40k? Where are armoured war trains? Or naval fleets, for that matter? Where are parachuting bears, trombone missile launchers, Ninja Pirate Zombie Robots? So long story short, i don't like it. I'm even working on my own parody.

So with what everyone here has said about the Warhammer 40k universe, is it safe to say it's stupid to look for anything deep in the said universe and its stories? Because frankly, that's what people are trying to push it as, what with the Warcraft universe (which is really really tame in comparison) being a "COMPLETE AND SHAMELESS RIPOFF OF WARHAMMER", and that's a very big reason for the bad taste in my mouth when anyone mentions WH40K.
There is absolutely nothing deeper to Warhammer 40k then "Here's some dudes. For the last 10,000 years, they have been killing each other. Have fun".

That said, I am a huge fan of the universe, as well as both Dawn of War games (the first one moreso). I've only played a handful of tabletop games though, so I can't say how good that is.

In all honesty though, Warcraft is a fairly blatant rip-off of the Warhammer Fantasy universe, while Starcraft is a fairly blatant rip-off of 40k. There is a reason for that though. Starcraft was originally going to be a Warhammer 40k game, until Games Workshop backed out. Blizzard then scrambled around and made their own universe, which is also quite interesting and good.

I'm not sure the same is true for Warcraft and the Fantasy setting, but if it's not, Warcraft borrowed heavily from Warhammer Fantasy. All you have to do is compare character designs and it becomes fairly obvious.

I love Dawn of War not so much Dawn of War II, the rest of the video games are pretty bad.

The table top games are a different kettle of fish, 40K is enjoyable and so is Warhammer (Including the Fantasy role play angles), Epic, Epic 40000 and battle fleet gothic, although their flames seemed to dim very quickly the unrivaled scale gave me great joy for tactics and massive armies.

The books and stories are really enjoyable, although the language used is definitely not at the same level as Harry Potter, Dan Brown and other authors, the imagination is superb and the books are good enough to keep telling yourself one more chapter.

However my pride and joy always came from customising. Currently I am in the process of making a dreadnought, when I take it back to games workshop I'm hoping they say, "the hell is that thing!"
