I've never played the tabletop (although I do own a few painted miniatures), but I'm a very big fan of W40k. I mostly got into this universe via the novels of the Black Library, of which I have over 60 by now, and the collection is growing. Call them unimaginative all you want, but I love Space Marines and the like... my most recent purchase is a monster of a book called the Liber Chaotica, so as you can see I'm really into the whole background lore.
Oh yeah, and the DoW games (well, all except Soulstorm, of course) are among my favorites. I'm one of the folks who liked DoW2, and I'm really stoked for Chaos Rising! (Probably won't get to play it until April, though -.-)
Same here. I stopped playing the tabletop ages ago, but I love the books. I've always wanted the Liber Chaotica special edition with the chains and seals.

The what now edition? That sounds expensive. And awesome. (Awesomely expensive...?)

Do you have a picture? I can't find any.

I can't find a picture, but I remember it quite clearly. It was hardback limited edition. It was sandwiched between 2 pieces of Perspex that where ingraved with wards and seals to protect against the taint of Chaos. It was chained and padlocked as well. I think it was about £100. Black Library made quite a few collectors editions of books (I own a couple). They where always cool.

Honestly?
I love Warhammer 40,000.
I collect the books, I have most of the videogames, for a while I even collected the models.
I just find it so interesting. "Glory to the first man to die!" and all that.
Damn, but there are some good books written.
And 'Shinji and Warhammer40k' could not exist without it.

I never played the tabletop because it was too expensive to make anything cool. As for the games, DoW1 is one of my favorite RTS games of all time, and DoW2 is a piece of shit that broke my heart.
Agreed, had alot of trouble installing DOW2 to start with because of the stupid Live profile integration, which I thought especially stupid because its Steam activated anyway (so the reason I had to get another profile was what exactly?). I really liked the improved cover system, thought that made way more sense than "cover areas" of the original but the single player campaign sucked because you had very little freedom (limited to 4 hero squads per deployment and worse, no building in the campaign) unlike DOW1 which gave you full control within the limits of the scenario.

Also DOWI would let you play LAN games between the same product key (online games required different keys per copy) which was a big plus. My friend and I used to play multiplayer all the time. Still do occasionally.

But then comes the sobering realization. First strikes Darkness-Induced Audience Apathy. I cannot possibly care for any side involved, because all of them are equally, irredeemably atrocious, and everyone is going to die horribly anyway, so what's the freaking point? The god of hope is evil, i don't want to stick around in universe like that. Then the fanboys. Oh god, the fanboys, the obsessive kind of them. I cannot stand them. The brick-faced seriousness of the setting about itself is pretty annoying, but when fans start taking it serious too... THE HORROR!
And yet, here you are, posting on a video game forum and, ostensibly, a member of a community wherein you are less than human (or, at the very least, below notice) if you don't conform to the standard of the "Hardcore." :p

EDIT: OT: I enjoy 40k on the tabletop immensely, and the games are decent enough that I won't refuse to play them.

I've never actually read any of the books or played the tabletop or computer games, but the fluff/lore always sounded really cool.

I like, but I honestly have never touched the tabletop game. The art style and the over-the-top nature of the whole universe is just awesome though, and if I knew people who played, or could convince friends to play, then I would start. I have both DoW games and all expansions, and they're awesome. I can kinda see why DoW2 gets all the hate it gets, but kudos to relic for trying something new instead of releasing DoW1.5. Can't wait for chaos rising!

40K is OTT in the best, crazy way. I don't take it too seriously when I play, but I enjoy painting and modelling, and the tabletop is fun (for me anyway).

I don't like people who take it too seriously, but this happens in every avenue of gaming.

A lot of people complain about the price, but I just see it as gaming. It's just another type of gaming, £40 for a couple of units, and I get way more playtime out of the tabletop than I do with any current-gen games.

All I know of 40K is SPESH MARHENS.

I plan to play it some day, not some day soon, but some day.

Where's the "The games vary in quality from very good to shite, but the setting is hella fucking balls to the walls awesome" option?

I don't play the tabletop any more, and Fire Warrior was atrocious, but just look at the tvtropes page. LOOK AT IT [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Warhammer40000]

It's. Frakkin'. NUTZ!

Also, my apologies for linking to tvtropes. grab some survival gear if it's your first time to that site... I mean it, just ask everyone else on this forum who's heard of it, even MovieBob.

The only thing I really dislike about WH40k is Games Workshop, but the game itself and most of the videogames are pretty cool.

Final Liberation is my fav, but Chaos Gate and both DoW games are sweet too.

Let's see:

- Imperial Guard army? Check.
- Blood Angels army? Check.
- Aquila tattoo? Check.
- Aquila pendant? Check.
- Aquila banner on bedroom wall? Check.
- Land Raider/Predator/Eye of Terror/Armaggeddon posters on wall? Check.
- Been playing since 1992? Check.

Yeah... yeah, I do think I like 40K.

Also, for people saying that it's all about dice rolls, that couldn't be farther from the truth. I take pretty much the same force against any enemy, give or take a couple of modifications, and adjust tactics accordingly. 40K these days is all about movememnt and cover.
