I've only played the PC games, so I can't comment on the original game, it seems a bit expensive though.

I loved the PC games though, just didn't play for very long before moving onto CoH.

Warhammer 40k hmm? It's alright. I'll play a few matches here and there with my Space Marines, but I never got all that into it. My friend loves it though. He won't fucking shut up about it.

And yet, here you are, posting on a video game forum and, ostensibly, a member of a community wherein you are less than human (or, at the very least, below notice) if you don't conform to the standard of the "Hardcore." :p
Surprise surprise: i do not. I'm one of those rare "artsy" types.

[small]Or am i?![/small]
Thus the "ostensibly" part :p

I like the 40k universe as a setting- I really need to go find some more books. Never played the tabletop, though I wish I could, and I've got every Dawn of War game, and have to say that I like Dark Crusade the best of those.

I just wrote a really long reply to this and IE fucked up when I tried to post it and lost it, so I'm just going to say FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!!!!!!!!!!! until I calm down enough to write it all again and re post.

EDIT:
20 years ago 40K was an interesting sci fi setting with lots of potential. Now it seems to be a marketing machine designed to sell little bits of plastic to teenagers. That said, it certainly looks like there's the potential for a vaguely sensible sci fi universe in there somewhere. The bits of fluff I have read recently don't seem to have been too over the top, so maybe it's just the teenage fanboys that make it seem stupid.*

I played 1st edition 40K for a bit and stopped just before the change from a more adult oriented product to the one that was meant to appeal to teenagers, around about 1993. I played a few spin off such as Space Hulk and Epic as well. A couple of years later I got into Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay V1, and since then I've preferred Warhammer Fantasy to 40K. The fantasy world is a lot better realised IMO and I find RPG's more compelling than tabletop wargames.

I forgot about warhammer and 40K until 2007, when I found DoW and Warhammer FRP v2 had come out. Since then I've got back into it a bit, having it all computer generated rather than having to bother with painting and dice is great.

I played DoW a lot and DoW II was fun single player, but unfortunately had no longevity. Fire Warrior was also crap, as was Warhammer Mark of Chaos. I would have played WAR except for the monthly fees. I would really like to see a 40K game that mixed elements of RTS and TBS, like DoW, Galactic CIV, Sins of a solar empire, Total War etc. Space Battles, land battles and resource management. It would involve conquering a new sector of the galaxy for the Imperium (or whoever). It would be awesome.

WHFRPV2 was/is great and I was happy to hear of Dark Heresy being released, I even bought the limited edition rulebook as well as all the extras and all the Rogue Trader books, but I can't really get myself interested in the 40K universe on a personal roleplaying level. The battlefield has been covered in great detail but the social fabric of the Imperium and it's ordinary citizens hasn't really been given enough coverage to get into it. I also dislike the system. I liked it in WHFRP, but they took all the bits I didn't like about it and expanded them for DH and RT.

I still have a large army from 1st edition as well as a few bits for Space hulk and other bits I did just for fun lying around in my parents loft as well as a good few unpainted ones, but I have recently bought a few new mini's and painted them in my spare time as an alternative to games (and at the moment a ladyfriend, dammit) but I'm not interested in playing the game again.

Right, here goes with posting, it had better not fuck up again...

EDIT2: Hooray! and *Also, I ignore some of the more recent developments like the Tau, Necrons and Dark Eldar.

I won't say that it's awesome, but both the tabletop game and the Dawn of War titles was really good.

I haven't been around it much more than your typical nerd/internet denizen, but I kinda like the grimdark sci-fi pastiche since it's intentionally over the top. Beyond this, though, I have no interest in playing the tabletop or video games, and like Kollega I have darkness-induced apathy syndrome for it.

However, I try to stay far away from the fanbase, which can best be described as the abusive jocks among nerds, more or less calling anything not soaking in grimdark (which they take seriously) "gay." This is doubly annoying for me since I'm an anime fan who doesn't shy from cuter works (just look at my avatar), and I've made the terrible mistake of arguing with a couple of 40k fans.

I do like the PC games and i used to play the tabletoop for a long time. but then GW started to dumb everything down and it lost it's way as they tried to appeal to a younger crowd.

Basically. old warhammer = good, new warhammer = bad

I love it so much I once created my own Eldar alcoholic drink while me and my mate were pretending to be an Eldar and Space Marine.. I was the Eldar because they're obviously the best.

I actually prefer DoW2 over the original, I like the greater focus on tactics and the almost immediate sense of action as opposed to most rts 'build a base, gather resources, build army, then have one giant battle where whoever wins is the victor'.

As for the setting? I like it. It's so over-the-top grim and dark that it's almost comical. Like someone looked into the minds of every 14 year old boy and created a setting based on what they saw there. And me, being immature, I think it's great fun! Fan of the Eldar myself. Love the whole 'advanced alien species slowly being driven extinct' vibe of theirs, and the fact they refuse to go down without a fight makes it even better.

Never played the board-game though and probably never will, nor have I read any of the book. Pretty much all my 40k knowledge comes from the PC games and various wiki.

Never played the tabletop game but I respect the time and energy some people put into their figurines. Loved the original Dawn of War RTS but can't say the same for this latest addition. This is partially because I enjoy setting up bases but mostly cause my favourite faction, the Sisters of Battle, is no where to be seen in DoW2 to the best of my knowledge.
Chaos is comming out for Dow 2 next week, U never no what else they may release.

If there is a thread about Warhammer 40K, I will find you Crimson, find you and hunt you down.

*Ahem* FOUL XENOS. YOU SHALL BE CRUSHED BENEATH THE FOOT OF THE ASTARTES! SUFFER NOT THE ENEMIES OF THE IMPERIUM TO LIVE. FOR THE EMPRAH!

My oldest brother buys as many books as he can. I am currently pressuring him to buy the rest of the Gaunt's ghosts series. I love Dan Abnett :<

I search through the entire thread looking for one of your posts, and I find you at the end.
