There isn't an option for not playing Warhammer. I used to, but then I gave up when I realized it's a collossal waste of money.

Ahmen...
When you look at it that way there's no reason for buying video games or books or anything like that.
you could say that ... but warhammer is filled with hidden costs... games or books pay once and its yours to play/read/enjoy as long as you dont break it.

Warhammer buy models, buy paint and glue etc,, bu codex, buy rule book,, 2 or 3 years later ohh look we've revised the rules... your gonna have to buy another rulebook. Because we've made new rules we've also made a new codex which your going to have to buy if you want to play.

After the third time round it gets annoying and wasteful.

/rant
The rulebook and army books are like 60 and 20 dollars respectively... That's really not a lot to pay once every few years
Over here in the UK the last rulebook and codex i brought was about £50/60 and the codex £18 and that was back when the exchange rate was £1 - $2

and im not in the best financial situation.

Warhammer Players. More disposable income than you since 1983.

But seriously, I tried getting into it a couple of years ago but I just don't have the patience to paint them. I prefer Magic: The Gathering.
Now I'm debating which type of game annoys me more, collectable miniatures games or collectable card games...

Both favor Money over Skill... but one costs $5 for a pack of cards, the other can cost $50 for a single friggin mini...

I think Miniatures annoy me more.

i uised to play a lot. i loved the whole idea of it. i loved the painting, the playing, and i thought the 40K universe was nothing short of epic.

i can't play anymore, because i've been out for waaaay too long, and i'd have to restart at the bottom of the pile again, because i stoppped playing before the rule changes

I have a small Tau army that I haven't used for ages, but over summer I might pop into Games Workshop for a few small skirmishes. It's not painted though because I'm a crap painter and I'm lazy, I like to customise my models in unique poses (I actually did one Fire Warrior lying on his stomach holding a Pulse Rifle in one hand, aiming like a sniper), but I don't paint them. I'll probably wait until I have a larger army and just paint them in greens and browns like camoflague colours, it's easy to do and quick and good for people who don't paint, like me. That said, I'm more into the video games at the moment (I've got DoW + expansions and Tau: Fire Warrior on the PS2, I want to get DoW 2 but when I had the chance I got Fallout 3 instead :s). Warhammer 40k is pretty damn awesome though, but I never really got into the Fantasy or Lord of the Rings ones...

I have a small Necron army (1500 points) which i am painting at the mo. I prefer to make and paint the models than actually playing with them, I like converting the models (my necrons have a barbwire/rubble theme). I actually like playing Blood bowl and can't wait for the game to arrive on PC.
Oh yeah I love bloodbowl. You only need a few models which means you can spend more time on each model and it takes less time to play.

There are too many ways to approach Warhammer to fit in the number of options.

I don't play 40K as much as I used to. I only kinda played FB because we played Quest, no one had dark elf models, so I picked up an army pack and it went from there.

I paint and model because I like coming up with goofy ideas, like painting two space marine sergeants like Triple H and X-Pac doing the DX crotch chop.

I love the fluff. The Fantasy lore is pretty decent fantasy, and I like the fact that it looks like they're steering 40K back in the direction of "there are no good guys." (Well, except maybe the Eldar. But they're such a pack of cheeseballs you hate them on principle.)

Rules books are £30 pounds and only 1 codex is currently £18, now the fact you can take up the hobby and keep in it for about £100 is not that bad, especially as it come with a welcoming and enjoyable community

I've played it for 11 years and I'm certainly not going to stop now.
I've got about 3 armies for 40k, but currently using Tau.
I've got 1 function Dark Elf army for Fantasy.
LOTR can jump up it's own franchise-milking arse.
I've recently gotten into the Specialist Games too, especially Blood Bowl and BFG. I'd like to get back into Necro and Inquisitor, but nobody plays them where I live.
I collect it as a hobby, and play when I can. Sometimes I go through phases where I don't paint for ages, but I play a lot, and sometimes it's the opposite. I wouldn't consider myself to be a good painter, but I'm competent. Most of my models look good at arm's length, but not close up, except for some character models I've painted.
I do hate how expensive it is, but GW are releasing more and more models in plastic, which can reduce the cost a bit, but I wouldn't go as far as to say it's cheap. But the simple answer is - if you don't like the prices, don't play it. Nobody's forcing you to play it. The thing I hate most amongst Warhammer players is when they're moaning that all the prices are too high, yet the continue to play.
I also hate the label that comes with it. Me and a couple of my friends that play are perfectly normal guys, who most people just take for video gamers (which is fair enough), but most people are surprised when we say we play Warhammer games. But there's nothing that can be done to change the fact that playing Warhammer does automatically make you a geek...not a nerd, just a geek.
Anyone who thinks Warhammer is geeky is right. Anyone who rips it out of a person for playing it can just f*** off.

Used to play LOTR warhammer but gave it up due to money and time constraints and the fact I preferred painting them to actually battling lol

£100 is pretty steep to start anything you'r not sure of if you like it. And the community is among the worst i've seen. They keep heckling about tiny lore errors for days and apparently it's mandatory to insult wow and wow players for atleast 5 minutes in every conversation. Being called names on my first day for playing an unrelated videogame put me off warhammer very quickly. 3 years later, WAR fanboys demonstrated that they haven't changed at all.

TO be fair you could say the same thing about most hobbies, Plus £100 would be full fledged hobbiest, £40 is a compleate set for 2 people
Plus your local store must really suck, I mean really really really really suck

It's not that expensive when you compare it to video gaming. (Note these arn't exact prices)

Warhammer 40k
Starter set - £40 which includes rule book, dice, templates, two armies (about 600 points each)
Expanding army - codex £18, models say about £60 (for a standard 1500 point army)
Paints - foundation (assuming you buy about 5 - generally more than enough)£15
- Standard (about 10 will be plenty) £25
Brushes - about £6 for 3
glue - £10 (superglue and polycement)

which comes to about £170. However you may spend more on models but less on paints (for necrons I only use 1 foundation paint, 4 normal paints). It is more expensive if you start from scratch and collect multiple armies but still considering a new gamesconsole costs between £200 - £300 and then you've got games, controllers, online sub. etc.
