I bet it'll be more like "Superman Returns" for a few reasons.

a) Zak Snyders annoying penchant for slow motion is ill suited to Watchmen
b) His focus on exact wink/nod comic pannel translations are corny
c) It's only a 2 hour and 30 minute move, not enough time to really convey the story of Watchmen properly.
d) It's got a pretty b-list cast.
e) A february release does not show studio confidence in the film.
f) Watchmen is pretty much unfilmable.
Totally agree, except the B movie remark, i love B movies, or rather some B movies.

I'm trying to not get my hopes up. Last time I did that with a film(Quantum of Solace) they were dashed. Just going to wait watch it, probably hate it. I find that the first time I watch a film I always judge it rather harshly, especially on the big screen where the sound always seems to be off a bit.

Probably take a few screenings or the DVD release for me to start to like it, picky person that I am. I need to get deflate my expectations before I can enjoy a film.

I read the comic book and for the record, it did not make me think "THIS IS SO DAMN AWESOME!". It might have portrayed a gritty future of superheroes, however I found that Arkham Asylum and Akira were far superior graphic novels. The Watchman in my opinion have very unbelievable characters and the only one I ever had minimal fun reading about was Rorshcn...can't spell it...Ink Blot Face Man.

Other than that Dr. Manhattan was a huge eyeroll for me.

the question that has to be asked is, in a post 9/11 world will the story be carried out to it's fruition or will a mini apocalypse be too much for the producers to handle? if they try to fob people off with a sucrose sweet hollywood ending in which everyone lives happily ever after than this film should be avoided like the plague.

It'll be a wretched, disgusting failure. Think about Dark Knight. What made Dark Knight awesome? It was original. I know that sounds nuts, I can hear you saying "Uh, Crunchy, I don't know if you know this, but Batman is like, the most prolific modern character in existence." And that's true, which is why it is so much more impressive that the Dark Knight did its own thing. The Dark Knight's Batman is not Burton's Batman, or Schumacher's Batman or even Kane's Batman. The Dark Knight's Joker is a different character than what we've seen in the past. And The Dark Knight's Two-Face was perhaps the finest iteration I've ever seen, but it owes little if anything to the Animated series, or the comics, or, God Help Us, Batman Forever.

Technically, Batman Begins and its sequels are rooted in "The Long Hallowe'en" but I think it's fair to say that the creators of these films broke any and all barriers in the comic they felt they needed too.

Watchman on the other hand, seems to be trying to placate the ravenous Watchmen fans. The Watchmen story has only been told once, and most people agree it was told as well as it ever could be. Snyder will do his shot-for-shot remake to try stop from upsetting the die hards, and ruin his chances at making a decent movie out of it in the process.

Umm, maybe that was too long a post, I think my point is pretty simple though:

"In order for a movie adaptation to be successful, its creators have to be able to tell the difference between vital themes of a story, and useless minutia. Dark Knight had a team that could do that. I'm not confident Watchmen does. And that's probably just because Watchmen deals with more complicated themes."

It's hard to judge. Moore thought it was unsuited to film, but he's always been anti-cinema and pro-comics...

Isn't that a good thing? I mean I'm not sure if Ben Affleck is cut out for the role anyway but I'm sure he wishes to rape more comic book characters in the mouth.

This is my feeling on movie adaptions, if you haven't seen or read the source material the movie will be good, V for Vendetta is a good example, I saw the movie before I even knew it was a comic, I thought the movie was good, I have since read the comics, and while I see how they greatly differed from each other the movie was still good, it just loosely followed the actual storyline, it will probably be the same or the Watchmen, it will be a good movie with a storyline loosely based on the comic with a different ending.

I don't think it will redefine the graphic novel movie genre, as it was already redefined with Dark Knight. We'll see how much it was at the Oscars. It will live up to the hype, but maybe in a more 300 way than we wanted. I, for one, was disappointed that the panel where Ozy strikes the assassin with the pole was shot from above, not below.

Oh God I hope it's good. I know, deep in my heart of hearts, that it probably won't be, but that can't stop me hoping, can it?

it will be good, mark my words... all you doubters will be proven wrong... people said that 300 and Sin City were unfilmable as well, and those both turned out to be great movies.

The success of 300 is debatable, personally I found it hilarious...

I hope it works.I really do. Or I may have to find a ledge and throw someone of it. Preferably into a pit full of snakes. The book is too good, and I hope it is faithful to the plot and the ending. Sugary endings will end in tears of rage.

I watched the trailer to Watchmen and I can pick out every single scene from it where it was in the book. I'm holding out hope in my deepest recesses that the film will be good because of how much love people have for the source material, and I'm hoping that translates to the people making it.

It at least looks like it'll be better than V for Vendetta, and since I thought V for Vendetta was pretty good that's all the recommendation I need. Just go into it with slightly adjusted expectations, and you won't be disappointed.

i don't think there's really much to debate... yeah, some of the more hard-core fanboy types bashed on it, but those kinds of people always come out of the woodwork for the comic adaptations....

commercially, 300 was a success and that point can't really be argued. artistically, the film stayed very close to the original story and art direction of the book, so again i don't see what can be said against it. if you liked the book, you probably liked the movie. if you have a secret shrine to frank miller set up in your closet which you make regular offerings to, you're a fanboy and need to get out more often....

it is, after all, just entertainment.... people shouldn't take this stuff too seriously....

I'm certainly going to see it. I won't read the graphic novel until after seeing the movie. That way, the movie has a chance to at least entertain me.

I watched the trailer at least 30, 40 times, that was how much it hooked me. Then again, i can't really add much to the argument seeing as i haven't read the graphic novel yet, which may or may not be crucial to one's interpretation of the movie's virtues or lack thereof. But from what I've seen in the trailers, i doubt it will be an abomination, the trailer works well and gives me hope having never heard of the thing before the trailer, and doing a lil bit of internet research afterwards.
