I've just started reading it now, and I'm no longer sure it'll translate properly to the big screen. But I'm an optimist, so i'll wait and see

Well that wouldn't have worked out for a movie. I'm glad they changed it.
Me too.

I never really liked it to begin with, it seemed a bit out of place and I agree that it's not filmable. If there's another way to do it, than that's fine.

I think I'll be able to enjoy the movie, even if he changes a few plot points, it's not like the novel will cease to exist. Plus Malin Åkerman is playing the Silk Specter, which is cool because she's Swedish :p

Edit: How do you place spoiler tags?

I love how, after Dave Gibbons himself said the film was basically perfect, people still have doubts

I don't want to start shitting on the Watchmen film before I've actually seen it, but really, what can you replace the squid with?
An Octopus? Or maybe a Cuttlefish, or an alien spaceship. Actually the spaceship would be good as you wouldn't need the psychic element, which I found stood out a bit as (Dr.Manhattan aside) there are really no "powers" in the Watchmen universe. A spaceship would be dangerous, and obviously alien. If the don't do that maybe a terrorism angle (like 9/11) giving it a modern angle as the Cold War angle isn't around any more.

So I finally read it through, and the novel is quite amazing. Now that I know about the octopus and its significance, I now understand why its absence is such a big deal, and I now join the overwhelming majority who really have no idea whether the movie movie is going to actually work.

im hoping for it to tank because it would be very funny to see a movie with so much hype to be so bad, but then again i really hope for the movie to do good and be good

I have to say crap. As this thread displays, the hype is so wildly out of control that nothing could possibly live up to it

Why is there no "good" option? The poll seems to be either "It'll be incredible" or "It'll suck"! Where's the middle ground?

Anyway, I'll watch it and thik it'll be a reasonably entertaining flick but won't be outstanding in any way. Plus, I found Superman Returns to be a rather watchable film. Maybe I'm biased though because I didn't have to pay money to watch it.
Excuse me? The "It'll live up to the hype" is your "good" option, because the massive hype and excitement stems from the belief that it'll be, at the very least, "good". And are not the majority of us who chose the "I have no idea" option choosing a middle ground, even those who chose "It'll live up to the hype" too?

The threat has to be 'extra terrestrial' or the plot dont make sense. The point was for humanity to band together under fear of alien attack. No giant squid or similar, no sense

give some of your views if you are totally against the project, like the author himself has so clearly stated.
Alan Moore also didn't like the V for Vendetta movie, which I thought was great. I believe that he requested that his name not be mentioned in the credits of that film. I haven't read Watchmen, but I have a cousin who tells me it's better than Vendetta (and I'll take his word about movies, books and music)

On a slightly off topic note, I wouldn't want to be in Alan Moore's position. I can't imagine what it's like to put your work into the hands of people who you don't think will treat it well.

But that was the great thing about the end, I felt as conflicted and weirded out as the main character seemed. I was like "Wtf a giant squid? Nuclear war with Russia averted...I guess that kind of balances 30 million dead...does it?"

But I agree it would be hard to translate to film, like at the end of War of the Worlds (the original novel) the germs thing seems miraculous and awesome. In the film, it goes from one minute getting our arses handed to us on a plate, to "wait they'll dead?"

I bet it'll be more like "Superman Returns" for a few reasons.

a) Zak Snyders annoying penchant for slow motion is ill suited to Watchmen
b) His focus on exact wink/nod comic pannel translations are corny
c) It's only a 2 hour and 30 minute move, not enough time to really convey the story of Watchmen properly.
d) It's got a pretty b-list cast.
e) A february release does not show studio confidence in the film.
f) Watchmen is pretty much unfilmable.
I wholeheartedly agree.

but i like what the director did with 300, should be interesting

But the giant squid's pretty crucial though. o_O They'll pretty much HAVE to change everything else, or at least a lot of it.
The squid monster was a means to an end. If some disaster convinces the U.S. and U.S.S.R. to stop fighting and pull together, there's still hope.
I hear that's what was done. Persistent rumors state that Veidt causes a set of nuclear-like attacks which *look* like the work of Dr. Manhattan.

d)The heroes themselves are pretty b-list.
e)It's released March 6.(not much better)
g)They made the prison scene into an action scene complete with slow motion

That makes sense with the blue explosion in the trailer.

I am really hoping this movie will be awesome...the commercials look pretty sweet...so hopefully it will live up to the hype. : )
