If you've been here long enough or took a look at the forums (or even the front page), chances are you've come across MovieBob, even if you haven't seen any of his videos or read his articles. He's a reviewer/commentator here on the website, running the shows "Escape to the Movies" and "The Big Picture", along with another show at Screw Attack called "The Game Overthinker." Now, I don't know about you, but I always love reading the comments before even watching the videos of anyone I really see, and it's no different with Moviebob's videos. It's usually the same with most videos on this site: the first few posts are great with praise, fallowed by some more evened-out positive receptions and then a divide between positive and negative comments, directly proportionate to how hot/controversial the subject is. Same with Moviebob, again. However, yesterday (and by the way, Happy New Year's Day!) I did the opposite: I watched the video first and then the comments.
That very video happened to be currently the newest "Extra Credits", entitled "Choice and Conflict". It's a show that I really enjoy, even when I think some of the points are off (as do many, as I see from the comments). One thing that caught my eye, however, was the very beginning of the video, where the narrator (who's, and I deeply appologize, name escapes me at the moment) shone the spotlight at not only Moviebob's show here, but at the "Game Overthinker." Now I have to confess, I'm not the biggest Moviebob fan, for probably the same reasons that many others in the community have already voiced, so when I heard the narrator give props to MovieBob, I admittedly cringed. I still enjoyed the video regardless, and off I went to check the forums to get the consensus and see some interesting ideas. The reception was positive, the ideas unfortunately sparse. However, what surprised me about the forum was that more than half the posts had a blurb about MovieBob, and surprisingly, addressed him with distaste, ranging from mild uneasy to volatile loathing. There were, of course, a words about checking MovieBob's works and even a thumbs up on "Extra Credits" for linking the two. Still, the negative comments stuck with me.
Now, most of you will probably question (and I paraphrase) "Why? Something hot/divisive got mentioned in the video, theres bound to be few negative comments" or "Its just a few posts of people showing their opinions, what do you care?" I'm not really sure, actually. I guess part of it is that he has two shows currently on the site, but that doesn't absolutely mean he's well liked, just popular for a plethora of reasons. Maybe it was all the positive and awed comments on his video threads, but again, that's not guarantee; even some of the most hated shows on the internet, like say, The Irate Gamer get pages of positive feedback (and that's about the only comparison I'll make between the two). Truth is, even with these reasons, I'm not sure why it sticks with me. Here's something I would like to find out, however: What do you guys think of MovieBob and any of his shows (including off-site ones like "The Game Overthinker" and his blogspot, if need be). I'm not expecting to get the entire community's consensus about the guy or his works, or that this poll will get a lot of votes, but it's something to at least sate my curiosity and see what a few people think. So what do ya say, guys?
Also, before I end, I have add that I ask people to obey the rules on a topic like this, as obvious as it seems. I may not like MovieBob, but there's no need for you to attack me or my opinion, nor vice versa with the same applying for everyone else.
