I have to go with the gamecube controller here. I found that it fit easily in your hands, with the A button large and centered which was great as it was the most used button for most GC games.

I second that. I own a PS3 but my little brother had the 360 for about a year before I bought it and I must say the 360 controller is just so ergonomically sound. The original XBox controller was... awful to say the least. But the 360 controller just seems like it's made to sit in your hands. Aside from that the button layout is straight forward, nothing seems like it's been crammed in just for the sake of that-FPS-that-might-one-day-need-it. Coming a close second is the Gamecube controller.

Playstation controllers are good but adhere too readily to the 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' way of thinking. Plus they're a bit on the small side. Everyone's hand sizes are different. I suppose like everyone's idea of ergonomically sound is aswell.

EDIT: Oh yeah, ever thrown a 360 controller at your TV/wall/friend? It doesn't break so easily... Sony you need to make your controllers a bit more robust.

Not a controller, but the best thing I ever used for gaming is this. [http://www.hartware.de/media/reviews/90/oben.jpg] I still have it somewhere.

Has to be the wireless Xbox 360 control pad.
I like my controllers to have some weight to them, and as far as control pads go, the 360 pad is one of the heaviest I've ever used, and I love it. Other than that, the button layout just feels natural. After using it, it takes me a little while to adjust to my Playstation Dualshock/6-axis control pad, which is much lighter.

I must definetly say Nintendo has a great place, all of the controllers they have made, fromN 64 and up are have the buttons just there to press, maybe the only exception if N64 i had to strech to get ot the analog or Z button,

Other than that I'd go with the origonal xbox, the advanced controllers(the ones with black and white on one side and start and select on the other) where pretty easy, even if i had to move my hands around, kindof like a keyboard.

If we include PC, technically still a console, just in it's own league with a mac(for wimps of course). Nothing can beat a good keyboard and mouse, they are made now so you barely have to move to hit all the needed buttons.

I think the SNES controller is really comfortable. I bought a SNES-style GameCube controller and it was so nice, the only problem being that there is no joystick so you can't use it for a lot of games.

When you type "best controller" in the search bar, you get so many threads with hundreds of posts that it baffles me to even see this here.

I do think the ultimate control would be a 64 style with 3 prongs and another stick for the modern games. It would work for fightning games and shooters and comfort.

..Maybe add another prong with a ball on it to help with stragegy games.

besides the fact that the gamecube controller "LOKKS LIEK FUCKIGN LEGGO!!!"

they are right.

the dreamcast's analog was godly and the 360 is probaly the most ergonomic controller on the market right now.

The leading intrawebz experts are a bit off. How is the N64 controller above shit? It has three handles, and I dunno about you guys, but I have only TWO hands. PS and N64 should swap, in my opinion.

Also, the N64 has the most accurate and sensitive analog sticks because it used a system of tiny gears, which unfortunately wore down in a couple of years, and decreased the sensitivity.
So that's why all my N64 controllers have broken sticks now that just wobble around O_O

i went with the 360 controller even though i honestly dont know if they can be compared, they are each used for the style of gameplay that their console is based on, the 360 controller is built for fps's such as halo, gears and COD, while the PS3 controller is more for fighting games such as Unreal Tournament and Tekken. so i really dont know if its possible to say which is BETTER
