The zombie genre has always been something which interests me. You have a nightmare scenario which can never end, where the player can only hold them off long enough to escape somewhere else. There is no major foe you must overcome. There is no prophecy to uphold. You are not fighting for any just causes - you are trying to survive against something which can?t be beaten.
However, even I?ve been getting tired of modern-setting zombie flicks and games. Something I?ve been experimenting with lately is setting my game in the 1900s - You have more primitive technologies, more basic construction housing, town layouts can be more unique. Stuff in general which hasn?t been overdone as of yet.
-Less worry about electronics as much. No computers, no Tvs, less cars, no alarm clocks, ect. It makes my job in modeling much easier.
-Less guns. More melee. I?ve always hated killing 3000 zombies before they got closer than half a mile to you. 1900s guns were slower firing and thus staying as a group has considerably more benefits.
-More fun to play with timeline. People don?t know as much from the 1900s as they do today, so it?s easier to lie and get away with it.
-Less roads. Roads take up a lot of space today - however there weren?t as many ( and much smaller) cars in the 1900s. This means I don?t have to devote 20% of my town?s volume to streets. More content, more close quarters.
-?Do it yourself? feel. The true RednBlue American knows how to nail a door onto a window! He knows how to clean and repair his gun! He knows he must protect his country against the anti-christian zombie threat!
-More unique characters. The player starts off by himself but via a light rpg system I want to give the chance of npcs joining the players team. Racism, sexism, and age are much easier to play with in a 1900s theme.
So, what does the escapist think of a zombie mod taking place in 1916? Would you take a look at it or move onto the next thing? Thanks for answering!
