But wouldn't the lose money on hardware? You can bet a large number of people won't buy the consoles if they do thissophiebelle said:I'm doubting they care much, if at all, if the people who only buy used don't buy their console. They usually lose money on hardware. They aren't right now, but it took five years to get to this place.Hazy992 said:But wouldn't the lose money on hardware? I know software is where the money is and companies deliberately make a loss to get a sale but if no-one buys the hardware then they can't sell the software can they? Way I see it it's more beneficial to lose some money on used sales than doing this.sophiebelle said:They usually lose money on hardware. When I was more naive, I'd walk into a GameStop store with every intention to buy a game new. Then they'd show me a virtually identical "used" copy that would save me five bucks, so I'd opt for that instead. I saved $5, and Sony easily lost $15+ (based off of a $60 game, where the retailer gets half and the producer gets half of the remaining half). If I hadn't been allowed to buy used then, it would have inconvenienced me negligibly, and it would have given Sony a deserved profit. I'm not here to say everyone is like I was then, but certainly a lot of people are. Companies like GameStop are counting on them to be.
I agree with you, but that's not what I said initially. I meant that if the only people who stopped buying the console were those who just buy used games, Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo are probably going to celebrate. They'll end up making a larger net and a larger percentage. It's probably not anywhere near that cut-and-dry, but it's still something to consider.Hazy992 said:I know software is where the money is and companies deliberately make a loss to get a sale but if no-one buys the hardware then they can't sell the software can they? sorry i must have misenterpeted you. Yeah that's probably true but I think that very few people actually buy used exclusively, so they'll still feel it if they did thissophiebelle said:I agree with you, but that's not what I said initially. 200 Million dollars is just a drop in the water for a big company like Bethesda. You've got us, we are just clinging onto the few sales the PC makes and hopes Bethesda wont stop porting to us even though they are obviously loosing money doing it.Das Boot said:The thing is the modding community is only a tiny portion of their sales. They are obviously never going to actually go exclusive but if they wanted to they could and would still be just fine. Yea they would loose some sales but not nearly as many as you seem to think.Rawne1980 said:But they lose the modding community which is quite a large part of it.
The modding guys number in the thousands so it isn't a few hundred sales they lose out on it's a massive chunk.
Going exclusive would damage their profits no matter what way you look at it.
Plus Bathesda actively encourages modding which is a large part of it's appeal.
The only reason some of us buy those games is purely to make and use mods for. I own none of them on console and never would consider buying them on console.
There are quite a few folks out there that aren't interested in consoles at all nevermind next gen ones.
