First gen for me. I didn't mind second gen, but after that their were just too many of them to bother.

Too many of them became repeats(how many ferrets or normal birds do we have now?) and the ones that weren't repeats had go way out their and just became weird.

I really start disliking pokemon around the 4th gen, as that's when they pretty much ditch the monsters deal and make it pocket-cute-things. I'm used to fighting dragons, not grumpy penguins!

But each to their own, I jumped ship, but I know people that still love the newer games.

My absolute, all-time favorite was Pokemon Silver. I love, love, LOVED Pokemon Red but Silver was my favorite one. Sadly, my bastard second-cousin stole it from me. Probably because he's a bastard. He also got my copy of Star Fox on the SNES but that wrong has been righted...

I'm not quite sure really, nostalgia would peg the first two gens as the best, but I really love some of the third and fourth gens. For the most part though, fifth is the worst, don't get me wrong I love my Serperior and Haxorous, but most of them are really lame. Why do they force us to use them in official tournaments?

Take that Haters! I've been around since it hit US shores and I still think newer gens are miles better than older ones!
Yeah I've never understood the hate and saying that an earlier gen is better. Each new gen added things to the series. The only thing did that would be considered removing something, they removed the one time use TMs; in gen 5 TMs are infinite just like HMs.

I like gen 5 because it has all the pokemon, of course none were taken out. So I can pick choose from all 649 some.

Though to combat the hate from people that said that there were hardly any to no good new pokemon this gen, I decided to make as many teams of pokemon from this gen that I like and have found good or great. So far, I have three teams, 18 pokemon of this gen.

I give you moves known now and level now:

Also I don't do nicknames, so they keep the original name. So far, I have three great teams of new pokemon.

1st because I was friggin' THERE for it.
2nd gen honestly wasn't that great, to me. It felt like a sequel that didn't expand enough, merely just being a new area with new pokemon and that's about it.
3rd gen gave everything an overhaul. More conflict, more color, more features, and my personal fan-favorite pokemon, Blaziken. I lurrrrrv Blaziken.
4th gen took (almost) full advantage of what the DS can do by expanding hugely on what 3rd gen had started.
5th gen then took what 4th gen did and turned it up to 11, especially in regards to story (read: it has one).

So... geez. I guess I'll have to go with 4th gen. 3rd was a turning point for the better for the series, but while it did a LOT of things right, it was 4th that did the rest of the things right. Besides, I spent a lot of time on my Blaziken in Ruby, but in Platinum I got my Infernape to 100, and in my book that's the sort of the that makes the decision a lot easier.

Also, Gen 3 gave me Milotic (i.e. the all-time greatest Pokemon to ever exist) and Blaziken, so it was almost my choice for best...
Buuuuuuut...I'm gonna have to stick to my guns with Gen 5.

First Generation. Back in the good old days.
Next would be Second Generation, when the aditions were more than "herfderf more pokemons!" and you could actually go to the previous region.

Those two were the best.

I think that 2nd gen was the best. Ruby and Sapphire were alright, and then Diamond and Pearl were meh...

I haven't even got around to white and black. I spent so much time trying to (once and for all) catch all those bastards on my Diamond game (even doing a multi generation upload from GCs pokemon Colosseum > Ruby > Diamond) and then black and white came out. I'm not transferring the hundereds that I have again.

Fuck. That.

This is a no contest. 2nd Generation.

First of all the number of ridiculously outrageous Pokemon was at a minimum.
Secondly, after finishing the Elite Four, you can go back to the region from the 1st generation.
Thirdly, there was no ridiculously large number of legendaries. In the 5th gen there are so many it's difficult to call them legendaries.

EDIT: Also, there weren't any stupid legendaries that are basically God. I mean, Arceus, the creator of the universe, and you can catch him. The fuck?

2nd. You could trade pokemon between the 1st and 2nd, fantastic improvements, pokemon were actually well designed (herp derp trash pokemon... literally), somewhat challenging, you could travel back to kanto, etc etc

Unova/Gen 5.
The first 151 were shit that wouldn't even make it past the concept stage if they were submitted nowadays.
Exactly.

Voltorb/electrode: hurr it's a pokeball
Oddish: monochrome shape with a face
Diglet: see above
Ditto: see above
Gastly: see above
Shelder/Cloyster: see above plus the same purple shell
Nidoran + evos: same recoloured pokemon
Geodude + evos: a rock with a face
Magikarp: it's a fish...
Weezing, Dugtrio, Megneton, Dodrio: pretty much the same deal
Onix: rocks with a face
etc etc etc.

Now, I've got nothing against gen 1 but seeing as the OP asked which gen is the best, not which gen was the best I just feel that I should point out how gen 1 can't compare to the later gens nowadays.

Plus, I hate nostalgia.
At least it's better than today's Pokemon... Sumo pokemon, dog with spikes pokemon, God Pokemon, space controlling Pokemon, time controlling pokemon.. I mean, look at this shit:

http://serebii.net/pokedex-bw/526.shtml

What the hell is that supposed to be? A horse-rock hybrid? At least the first two generations were somewhat sane-looking and easy to understand. It was especially important from the gameplay point of view.

Okay, a horse on fire. Probably Fire type.

Okay, a yellow bird shaped like thunders, so most likely Lightning/Fire. Oh, this Dragon gained wings, so it gave him Flying subtype. The only thing I didn't understand is the lack of pure Ghost type to counter all those OP Psychic pokemon.

Now take a look at this:

http://serebii.net/pokedex-bw/507.shtml

No, wait, that's another dumbass TERRIER pokemon.

http://serebii.net/pokedex-bw/640.shtml

Okay. Now, never seeing this thing, guess what type it is. Normal? No. You MIGHT guess Grass from color. But FIGHTING? THE HELL. Also just looking through the IV and V gens, half of those are just repeats. Monkey pokemon, bull pokemon, pidgeon pokemon, something that looks like a fetus...

Yeah I give up.

I don't know what generation is the best, but I do know which one is the worst.

I think I'll go with Soul silver and Heart gold.
I love the throw back to the old games but with a fresh look and feel to them.

I've always enjoyed Gen 1. Pokemon Red and Yellow were staples of my childhood. And I can also remember them all off the top of my head. I can't do that with any other generation.

Well yeah but you can't get it without cheating to get an item or just gamesharking him into your box or something. You know effectively playing GOD?

I love all the games but the answer is 5th gen. More things have been balanced making more pokemon useful for competitive play giving you more options. And there are even more Pokemon to boot! It plays out kind of like a retcon of sorts, being there are no other Pokemon available to you until you beat the game with a slew of all new pokemon. This makes it so you would use more of the new pokemon, and experience something you haven't been able to since gen 1 (if you're like me and was around for gen 1 as well as playing through gen 5 blind).

And before anyone begins to harp on designs think about this:
Dugtrio
Magnaton
Weezing

Three pokemon who are for all intents and purposes, more of the pokemon before it. And that's from gen 1. I could go on and complain about the Pokemon from the first gen that have evos that look the same but are slightly taller, but I won't.

Grimer/Muk was toxic waste and Koffing/Weezing are toxic fume balls. Your argument is invalid.

I actually like all of the generations pretty equally, as each gen has its own set of pros and cons.

I think my favorite Generation would have to be the one where they introduced the running mechanic, that was the equivalent of finding the holy grail to my young mind.

Gen V is by far the best, it has the revamped damage system from gen IV that made it amazing with some very nice polish to make battles go faster and somehow make turn based seem more fast paced. Also more Pokemon and more moves and such means more customization for competitive play.

It just cannot be possible for another previous gen to be better in terms of gameplay.
