Poll: What is the best video game of all time? (read the post)

Wow, this is bizarre. I notice that the inspiration link here is to Filibuster Cartoons - do you read that thing? That's an amazing coincidence, we're having a party for the guy who wrote that comic at my apartment tonight (he just got back from a year in Japan that he absolutely hated).

The closest thing to an RTS my source material showed as winning any 'best ever' polls or contests was Civilization III. Sorry, it's just kind of a niche genre.

Except for the Starcrafts, Warcrafts, World in Conflict, Command and Conquers, Company of Heroes, Dawn of Wars, Total Annihilations, Supreme Commanders, Total War series, Empire Earth, Age of Empires, Homeworld series, X-COM series, Codename: Panzers series, Blitzkrieg, Close Combat series, Combat Mission series, it's a real niche genre.

Not to mention Rise of Nations and its off the rails spiritual successor Rise of Legends, two underrated but exceptional games.

Tetris. No other game so indisputably dominates both a genre (puzzle gaming) and an entire platform (THE ubiquitous Gameboy game).

I voted for Super Mario 64 but you cant just put 6 old games and say 1 of them is the best of all time. Like yahtzee said the petential for games only gets better as time goes on and someone can argue that the best game ever is MWF 2 or MGS 4 or even GTA IV

portal is also widely considered best game ever. and not to forget Shadow of the colossus.

I am torn between Conkers Bad Fur Day and Timesplitters Future Perfect.

According to GameRankings [http://www.gamerankings.com/browse.html], if you voted on anything other that the Ocarina of Time, you're wrong, and Metacritic agrees.

However, taste in video games is all very arbitrary and meaningless. Saying any one game is "best" is an outright lie on the grounds that it avoids the crucial questions of "best in what way" and "best by whose perspective?"

So, basically, every time I see one of these best/worst threads I can only roll my eyes that here is apparently yet another poor ignorant soul from the next generation who has yet to learn the fundamental life truth that such labels are so very worthless as to render whose who put great importance in them as little more than deluded fools.

But I forgive ya because I know this is really about pumping your reply count and getting a badge. At least in terms of possibly thinking "best/worst" matter - in terms of being a badge whore, I wish upon you Yahtzee's Psychonauts purchase avoidance torture.

I voted Doom. Without Doom there would be no Halo, Killzone, or CoD. Plus I've played trhough Doom 2 way more times that I've played through all of the CoD games (I've played and beat everyone since 3).

Yeah, that's right: no 'Other' option. I know its a sin and somewhat distorts the results of the poll, but I did my best to research games that are widely considered to be contenders for the 'best ever' title in gaming. I basically used the source I listed below, enacted a 'one entry per franchise rule', and these are my results.

So vote based on the options available, even if your personal favorite isn't here, what do you consider the best game of all time?

while many of these are great games...besides FF7, that overrated rpg which only got the label of awesome because it made a successful transition into 3D, which could be said for Zelda and Mario 64, but those provided some change to the franchise while FF7 could be in an overhead 2D game and nothing would have to change.

also, what about Sonic 3?!?!?!?!?!?
