The film that made me the happiest was Spirited Away, but Grave of the Fireflies is by far more emotionally impacting. Grave of the Fireflies is an important film, and while my grandfather did serve on the side of the British during WWII against the Japanese (and was imprisoned by the Japanese military), Grave of the Fireflies teaches us that even though the Allies did what had to be done, and should feel no shame for what they did, the Japanese citizens suffered a lot as well and that there really is no "triumph" in war.
If you haven't seen Grave of the Fireflies, you really should. Don't worry, it's not political, it doesn't excuse what the Japanese did, but it does show that even though the Japanese were clearly on the wrong side of the war, they were still people and although they had to be defeated, what they went through was pretty damn bad. If anything it has a strong "anti-war" vibe aimed directly at the Japanese themselves, showing them the consequences of their actions.
So watch Grave of the Fireflies. It's not a happy film. It's one of the most depressing films I have ever seen in my life. But it's important and should be shown in all classrooms all around the world.
