Poll: What is your opinion on tvtropes?

visited it ocule times. its good. but its not godly. it seems to have trouble actually explaining stuff though.

If you mean that the desciptions are too long, just lick on the Laconic tab and gaze in wonder as you see it explained in just a few words.

This thread might read like my descent into madness, but after hearing about the issues with ED and SomethingAwful, I did some research.

Nice to know that the same website I use every day is run like a fucking police state behind the backs of most people. Christ almighty, the mods go into a paranoid lockdown at the first sight of trouble.

Tvtropes moderators HATE Something Awful, and outright ban people who they suspect are "goon spies" because they happen to post on both sites.

One goon from Youtube started mocking TVtropes for some of their more questionable content. The result? Instead of cleaning the articles up, the moderators decided that the best solution would be to obliterate them completely. So instead of actually working towards fixing their public image, they instead decide to do a fucking Stalin-esque purge to act like the offending pages never existed.

Err, what? I used to be active on the forums a while ago and I've never heard of the "goon spies" thing before amd the "Stalin-esque purge" of the "more questionable content" wasn't because of that person on YouTube, it was because it was, well, questionable content. Seriously, where did you research from?

The Wiki talk page. Look at it. Fast Eddie decided to go on a cutting spree that looks more like he's trying to cover his ass than trying to fix the site.

As for the Goon incidents, SA keeps tabs on TVT as well, documenting everything they see to laugh at. Both sites hate each other.

Taking whom seriously? The Goons or Fast Eddie? They're both run by morons. I just realized that the Troper Mods were idiots far later in the game.

the goons, they cheery pick the worst tropers and completely miss the point of the articles.

And the Troper moderators don't bother to clean up articles until someone complains, and then they treat it like it was the users fault for not bringing attention to it sooner. I am a fan of the site, but it is run by idiots. They openly admit that there aren't enough moderators around to maintain order, but they can't be arsed to bring more people on board.

I'm not saying the site doesn't have problems but those thread don't list them at lest not anymore.

I mostly go to the goon thread for humor purposes. However, it was their criticisms that caused me to delve into the forums of TvTropes, where I found out just how poorly it is run.

I don't get it. Everyone talks about reading thirty tabs at the bare minimum, but when I go there (usually for a trope someone else linked me) I read the page, and that's it. All of the other links on the page are uninteresting and don't catch my eye. It's a very quick in-out, unlike Cracked where I can spend all day reading their articles.

And there's no pictures. Boo.

I voted "meh", since all the obvious cliches it catalogs are the reason I have a low opinion of fiction.

Sadly, there's no getting away from it, mate. There's nothing new under the sun.

I get away from it by reading nonfiction. Philosophy, computer science, physics, mathematics. The theoretical sciences are especially creative.

Whether it's good or not YMMV (see what I did there) but TVtropes even has a section in each of it's tropes that catalogs times in REAL life that those tropes occur, so even in nonfiction you can't get away from them. Really, you only don't like TVtropes because you haven't been looking up tropes you enjoy. Besides, as their homepage states tropes do not equal cliches. Also, I highly doubt there's not a single bit of fiction that you haven't seen and enjoyed, and tropes are the reason that they're enjoyable.
