Poll: What kind of multiplayer do YOU like?

I'm not a fan of online multiplayer. This actually was a somewhat more recent development, as a actually did a fair amount of matchmaking in Halo:Reach until a few months ago. That changed after an incident with a friend of mine.

One day, while hanging out with my aforementioned friend, he convinced me to play a few online matches of MW3. I wasn't really a fan of the series myself, but it had just come out so I decided to give it a shot. It was going alright until my friend got me to give him a headset so he could chat with other people in the game (he was of the opinion that having the chance to do the back-and-forth insults and screw with other players was the reason to play online multiplayer). For the next twenty minutes I had to endure hearing him and another guy go from "I fucked your mother" to "I can't hear you, you're breaking up" and I suddenly understood the kind of assholes I was playing with. After he left, I ending ending my Gold Xbox Live membership and haven't played online since. I also reduced his standing in my mind from "Friend" to "Someone I hang out with because I need human interaction." Unfortunately, this also had the side effect of reducing my number of friends to 0.

On the other hand, I've had lots of fun with co-op games. If done right, most high action games are a blast when played with multiple people and I some of my fondest memories come from doing gaming stuff along side others, including an awesome weekend where me and my dad played through the first LEGO Star Wars game in one sitting.

So, what kind of multiplayer do you like doing, and what are some of your best (or worst) memories of it?

Co-op for me.

Horde mode in Gears3, Raiding in WoW, 3 vs A.I. in Starcraft 2, Firefight in Halo Reach... s'all good!

I've always preferred it because there's a feeling that everyone is winning, no pressure, even when you're going up against hard AI it's still just for fun. Whereas competitive was just a more kill or be killed cutthroat atmosphere.

Though, I've enjoyed some select competitive modes as well. Invasion and Big team Battle in Halo Reach, and fond memories of a million Onslaught matches in the good ol days of UT2k4.

I like a bit of both. Nothing beats a bit of Living Dead in Reach but a round of zombie-killing in L4D2 is fun too. It's incredibly satisfying getting a killstreak by mercilessly slaughtering zombies and it's also satisfying when you get on that 'copter with your friends while running away from four tanks.

I used to play Call Of Duty heavily online, but so many people are so keen on abusing the shit out of glitches in that game it's turned me off versing other players.
The best times I've had playing online are Nazi Zombies, Lord Of The Rings Conquest and Spec Ops.

Ok on topic nao, I'd have to go with the original L4D, fuck that was really well done. It's the only coop game I can play for hours on end without going "alright guys can we do something else?... Running in circles in Nazi Zombies is getting old."

Friends + Expert campaign = WIN

Other Horde type games I just get sick of, since we learn the good spots on the map and just camp there and sometimes run to a different camp site when something exciting happens.

I prefer online competitive. Co-op can be fun but I can get bored of it sometimes especially since it's becoming more and more common as something thrown into a game to give it that extra mode.

I am not a big competitive player but I do enjoy playing online with friends and doing our best against the other team, in the good games we will have fun and perhaps even lose but give them a good fight, on PC we would all say GG afterwards.

However the problem is that you can always find bad games full of assholes easily, my biggest example is LoL. I play PvP on that a good bit but seeing as my friends are all level 30 and I got it recently, I don't do that well and we can lose aa lot. We have had great matches but it's really easy to find bad ones too.

Online multiplayer, it's pretty much a gamble everytime you hit search.

All of the above. Though I do like to split it so that I only play co-op with friends and only play competitive with strangers, or at least people I don't see in the real world.

Also, there's nothing wrong with enjoying between match trash talk. I'm a particular fan of the weapon/tactic/perk + noob = insult. You shouldn't play purely for it, but if you get into it, it's kind of an icing on the cake thing.

All of it, but I drift more towards competitive because I play lots of League of Legends.... Don't judge me I'm not like them! REALLY! PLEASE BELIEVE ME! I contain my rage.

co-op with a friend(s) its easily the most fun online is way to hit and miss for every good match I have I seem to get 5 bad ones i.e trash talk,disconnects when losing or just plain acting like a complete twat to ruin the game for everyone else.

Online wise I have found Demon Souls (and by extension I will assume Dark Souls) have handled it the best.

co-op is the best. don't like doing games with random people where you're supposed to be co-op because they tend to just look out for themselves and then moan at you when things don't go their way.

I'm mostly a single player gamer, but I like playing a bit of co-op with a friend or three. The most recent stuff being Trine 1 & 2, Portal 2, Left 4 Dead 2, and Borderlands.

Outside of playing games of Madden against a friend of mine, I really haven't spent more thn 30 mins with any game's competitive multiplayer since the days of Raven Shield (2003) and Battlefield Vietnam (2004).

Co-op is my favorite but only on a game I haven't beaten yet. Otherwise custom games where its not competitive really just a bunch of fun.

I dabble in a little bit of everything to be honest.

I've played WoW for years and also looking forward to playing lots of the ME3 multiplayer, so I do like my online co-op. But currently I'm playing Soul Cali 5 online, great fun even though I suck (well 53% ratio). Online co-op competitive is always a good mix, some of my favourite gaming memoires were the duo teams in Halo 3, a mate and I failing at it but having a blast.

But I do love me some local mutliplayer as well. Had a great time playing borderlands spilt screen, whilst little big planet and buzz are great when I have non-gamer friends round. I suppose out of all the option I don't play offline competitive multiplayer much any more, though did play lots of Fifa when I was at uni.

So yeah I can, and do, enjoy all forms of multiplayer.

i enjoy co-op, and i'm pleasantly suprized by the pro-co-op turnout in the poll at this point. i'll have to check it later to see how it really turns out though. i don't suspect i've been wrong all this time. that doesn't make any sense.

Online random chaos for me, which I guess you could class as competitive. I quite like hectic environments so I do enjoy online shooters to a degree, which is the perfect way to unwind. No structure, no worries, just striving forwards to get the all important win.

Plus, if I dont feel up to "playing properly", I just usually go on the hunt for campers and ruin their fun. Its basically like being a virtual roach killer, going round checking in corners for scared, cowering forms of unevolved life.
