Windows 7 64 Bit. Although I almost wish I still had XP and games were made for it still. It just seemed to run better than this...Oh well.
Yeah the 64 bit really puts a wrench in old school gaming wish I knew a way around it. Got some old games like sam and max and the even older game privateer wing commander to work on it so it's a toss up. Besides those things it's just a really great operating system. You need proof? Have you seen any mac vs pc ads lately? My point exactly.

Mac OSX. Because that way I can install Windows on a partition, but can regularly deal with an OS that isn't nearly as slow, clunky, or unintuitive. This is, of course, simply my opinion. But, in said opinion, Mac OSX is vastly superior to Windows in every way but games, which is quickly becoming fixed and is already not a problem due to the parallel install.

Linux. Windows is frustrating and buggy as fuck, and I hate Apple. Linux works perfectly, it runs all the games I ever play either natively (Penumbra, Neverball, etc.) or perfectly in Wine (Starcraft, Steam, yeah). The only thing I gripe about is that the printer I own doesn't have a Linux driver, but that's because it was a crappy one I got for free so I can't complain much anyway. I love the system, I love how everything's free and it's all so easy to make my own. I have access to everything, nothing is beyond my control, I never get viruses, it never, ever crashes or bugs out, it's all too perfect to be true, but it is true. And free. I love Linux. Yep.
You can run Steam on Wine? I've never been able to. At least, when I had Ubuntu. Then a virus pretty much devoured my system, and I replaced it with Suse.

I loved Ubuntu, and I love Suse even more, but my adapter isn't very good right now and doesn't work for Suse. This means no internet, which is a biggie. So I use XP right now, and soon, I'll get a better adapter. (Also, Suse has the crappy, new Amarok, which is annoying.)
Yeah, I can run Steam perfectly in Wine. I have Ubuntu 10.04 (well Kubuntu, but it doesn't matter). And I've never heard of a Linux virus, what was it? I personally hate Suse but that's my opinion I guess. And I expect you mean a wifi adapter, in which case, do what I did, buy an Ethernet Bridge like this one <http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833320025> That's the one I use and it works perfectly. I never use Amarok, my player of choice is VLC but I can see how that wouldn't fit one's needs, in which case a quick google search should get you a new, free player. Hope that helps a bit ^_^ I have known many people to be turned off of Linux because of it's lack of hardware support, even though it is growing very fast right now. Don't give up, it will all pay off in the end ^_^

I use both ubuntu linux for, well, whatever I can and windows 7 for everything else.

I refuse to use OSX, not because I think it's bad, but because every one 'round here (that's "here where I live" not "here at the escapist") seems to feel the need to remind me just how easy a mac is to use and all the stuff that they go on about in their ads, particularly in a condescending arrogant tone that makes me want to shove my sock down their throat... *ahem*

I like to use ubuntu when I can primarily because of compiz which in my opinion is the coolest, most kick-awesome window manager eva! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZxfSwzhSn1c&feature=related watch and be amazed! ...are you amazed yet?

I like to use windows 7 for games and whatever and since it's set as the default OS to load on startup it is my primary OS. also, a bit off topic, for those reluctant to update to windows 7, I have found that it works brilliantly they basically took windows vista and fixed it and added a few new features, 7 really impressed me when I put it on my parents netbooks (yes, that's right, the little tiny laptops that barely have enough UMPH to run) and it runs better than XP did

XP. Unlike Vista or the Mac operating systems, it just works.
Macfag here, asking "wait... what?"

OT: I use Mac OSX, mainly because my dad would never get me a PC. I guess I could always bootcamp it if I wanted to use a Windows OS.
At work we sell a lot of computer peripheries including HDDs and external DVD drives etc. At one point we had an external 1.5TB HDD on on offer for about a hundred euros. Not a bad deal at all. We sold them like crazy and we got a crazy number of them back because they didn't seamlessly integrate with Macs. A little research later I discovered that you need to download an app from the Apple website to format hard drives. Something that comes by default with Windows.

We have card readers )For SD cards, MMC, compact flash etc) which wouldn't work with Macs. While you could open up the drives, see the names of it and everything, until you formatted it to work with Macs you could do nothing with it. A lot of Mac users screamed bloody murder when we wouldn't take them back because they weren't faulty and it was instead a problem with their Macs. Legally, we're not allowed to take back HDDs once they've been used due to some Data Protection Act. Even when we do take them back, for whatever reason, even if they're perfectly resellable, we have to send them back to head office for extensive formatting (As I've been told by management) so they can then be sent back to Seagate who re-package it and then sell it back to us.

Windows 7 64-bit. Because It's fuken oresum.

It's great. I actually haven't had any problems running programs. Even MechCommander Gold from the days of 95/98 worked with little fuss (Just had to get the files off the disk, run in Win 98 mode with 256 colour.)

And the new DirctX is pretty sweet. It's just so much better at doing lighting, so I can turn the settings up higher on the same hardware.

Oh, and I have XP, too. Dual boot is awesome. "Whoops I blew up Windows 7's explorer.exe. Ah well, to XP to restore it."

I got my rig 2 and half years ago before Windows 7 came out so I have Vista 64bit. Some problems but it runs alright. My laptop has Windows 7.

My gaming rig is getting quite old, I reckon another year or so and I will need a new one so will probably go for Windows 7 or wait if anyting new is comming along.

windows7 64bit, because XP64 is a broken POS and XP can only address up to 2GB per app for a 3GB total.
Windows 7 is suprisingly ok.

I had Vista first on my seyup, but then sue to my uni course and something called MSDNAA or along those lines i got Windows 7 64bit free. I could not be happier with it. Having a problem where any full screen games make it crash which is irritating. It is also got linux on it as well which is needed for my course at uni.
