Male because long hair graphics are awful in every single game i've ever played and females with short hair are weird. It's no wonder most protagonists are nearly always bald in graphically realistic games, hair is the main thing that games have yet to portray adequately. Even if I was female I would still play males because of this annoyance.

I'm a dude, and I almost always play as a female, mostly because I'm into role playing, and the gender selection tool gives me the ability to step into slightly unfamiliar shoes.
I will NEVER play as a male Shepard in Mass Effect, because I hate all the male character designs (Especially the default, god, he is ugly).
In-fact, Dragon Age 2 was the first time I played as a male protagonist when I had a choice in a very long time, partially because I liked Hawk's character design, and partially because I appreciated Bioware letting me pick a same-sex love interest (I'm bisexual in real life) and I had the hots for Anders.

I play females for the dress-up, but always roll a male "main" in MMO's.

Gender equality!

I play as a male most of the time, helps with my immersion since I, in fact, happen to be male. However after completing the game I usually turn around and play a female, just so I won't miss out on any of the story =)

Female in games such as Mass Effect and SWTOR where the voice actors tend to better at conveying emotion than the male counterparts, as well as look more aesthetically pleasing.

Male in most everything else, when I've got my full-on roleplaying mode going.

I'm male I play males 2/3 times and females 1/3 times. My second playthrough of a game will always be as the gender I didn't play the first time.

Got to agree with that, it's a nightmare being a long haired bloke as even when I am playing as male character my hair is still going to be clipping through my armor/neck.

Depends on the setting.

Usually a Male for the first time around, if fantasy either a Warrior or a Rogue, then another time around a female archer or mage.

It's the route I went with Baldur's Gate

Generally I play a man.

Find it easier to relate, and ever since Oblivion, I find it hard to play a female character seriously...if you know the mod community in that game, you know what I mean.

Mostly male, but I tend to change some times. Male and female characters on Fallout. I made a thief on Fallout and just thought a female sounded better for the character.

I tend to just think up a character. For example, making a Shield Maiden in Elder Scrolls would be cool, based on Éowyn in Lord of the Rings would be quite interesting.

Both equally, not for any other reason than what I feel like at the character creation screen.
Though there are two exceptions. Firstly in WoW I have two of each race, one male one female, just because why not :p
And mass effect, my infiltrator is always female.... I have no idea why....

Depends on the game in question. Though in fantasy RPGs, it isn't unusual for me to find myself playing as a female.
In Oblivion, Dragon Age and Fable III my "canon" characters were women.

Though a weird thing about that is, when I play as a woman I'm much more likely to make her good, and when I role an evil character it's always male. And I always either choose a rogue or mage class for a female, I rarely have a female warrior.

I don't if that's some sort of odd gender stigma I have or what, but that's how it's been for me.

It depends on if they get different stat attributes or not but usually I use a girl unless there's a dating element. otherwise it feels weird. of course that didn't stop me from having an orgy with a group of men in fable 2.

Male here and almost always play female. The only reason I would play male is for other romance options and sex based perks or quests. The reasons I mostly play female are because I know which ass I would prefer watching for a 50+ hour game of course and also I get to be the one thing I will never be in real life; a chick. Just the same reason people like playing as thieves or Evil sorcerers, they don't go doing that in real life but they would like the experience. Also I find myself caring for my character more if they're female, chivalry or something like that...

Oh and um... the Captcha had Korean letters in it :S

I'm female, and I always play as female if that's an available option. I don't know - it's the role-playing aspect, I suppose. I find it easier to think of the character as myself (if I was super buff and lethal with a mandate to save the world) if they're the same sex. Especially if the game is in third person - I feel a little detached from the game and from the character if it isn't the same sex, and I have to see them all the time. And besides, not all games offer you the opportunity to play as a female character, so when that option is available, I sure as hell take it.
